Betrayal is simply the way of things when money is on the line.
When Express Investigations is called to the will reading of a recently departed ice cream mogul, they didn’t expect to be hired from the grave. The indignant Newman family makes it clear solving the case will be an uphill battle, but Várlumo is determined not to fail. With only a week to find the killer, the team is in a race against the clock…in more ways than one.
The job comes with a life-changing bonus for each investigator, and while still reeling from violence and loss, they have major decisions to make. But first, they face a deep suspect pool of eccentric characters who harbor shocking family secrets, lies, and a lawyer they must keep at bay if they hope to unmask the killer. Two more murders don’t make the case any easier, and Várlumo struggles to keep the team’s focus on the task at hand.
In this final novel of the series, join Express Investigations in their twistiest case yet, and the three-hanky conclusion that sends the team off into the sunset.
CB Laurence started writing the Express Investigations series during the COVID shutdown in 2020 after thirteen years of writer’s block. (Ugh.) The Mansfield stories were inspired by a music video (can you guess which one?) and once the cork popped, the books didn't stop.
She has a love for all things sugar and sandwich, and would crawl through broken glass for a Diet Coke.
After twenty years in Phoenix, she now connects to wi-fi in Texas, and lives with her 7-pound guard dog, Benji the Yorkie.
A murder mystery. Lots of twists. Lots of suspects. Lots of interesting characters. So many secrets. Finish it off with a series ending epilogue. Very entertaining. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from Hidden Gems.
Everyone loved Red Newman so it was incredible that his last letter, enclosed with his will, should say that he thought someone close to him would murder him. Delusions of a depressed mind? Or was Red trying to get justice from beyond the grave?
I have read several of the Express Investigations mysteries and loved every one of them. I feel so invested in the characters and have grown to know them and their stories well. Gutted that this is the end of the series and I hope that CB Laurence has many mysteries in the pipeline!
