I think everyone knows what to expect from the Guinness World Records and while adults may be a bit blasé I think it is still a great book especially for youngsters who are not yet jaded and who can still be astounded by some of the natural and manmade wonders.
The Guinness World Records 2011 is a very good source. One reason is is a very good source is because it gives facts about interesting things. "...oldest female bodybuilder. She was 73 years and 9 months and 2 days old" (Guinness 14). It is also a very good source because it can be used for research. A person can find the most trusted celebrity, James Earl Jones. For these two reasons The Guinness World Records 2011 is a very good source.
Their most interesting facts in the Guinness World Records but 2 are my favorite. One of my favorites is about Michael Jackson. "Michael Joseph Jackson was probably the most famous living human being on the planet" (Guinness 187). Another interesting fact is the most three pointers in two minutes. Jason Kapono of Toronto Raptors scored 43 three-ponters in two minutes at the NBA All-Star Jam session in New Orleans, Louisiana. These are two of the most interesting facts in the Guinness World Records 2011.
The most creative facts are in this book. One of these creative facts is the largest modeling ballon sculpture. "John Cassidy used 434 modeling balloons to make a biplane that measures 490 cm wide and 375 cm long" (Guinness 190). Another creative fact is the largest inflatable sculpture. It has a volume of 1, 791.11 m3 and measures 196 ft in size. These are two of the most creative facts in this book.

Sea life can be very fascinating. One way they are fascinating is because a huge egg was found. "...in the Gulf of Mexico found a whale shark egg measuring 8.9 cm" (Glendary 58). Another fascinating fact about sea life is about a heavy fish. This was a whale shark that was found on an island in Pakistan weighed 2 tones. For these two reasons sea life can be very fascinating.
Humans sometimes have more hair than needed. One reason that is would be because of a Chinese woman. "The world longest documented hair belongs to Xie Quiping at 5.627 m..." (Glendary 81). Another fact about long hair is because of a Canadian named Sarwan Sigh. His beard measured 2.37 m. As a result humans have more hair than needed.
The human body is more amazing than a person can imagine. The most elastic mouth goes to Franscisco Domingo Joaquim. "The lips and cheeks of Franscisco Domingo Joaquim are mesured to be 17 cm wide" (Glendary 74). Austillians can be amazing too. The tongue of Jay Sloot was measured to be 7.9 cm which is the widest tongue ever. For these reasons the human body is more amazing than a person can imagine.

Humans can be very big but also can be very small. Donna Simpson is the heaviest living woman to give birth. "Donna Simpson of New Jersey, USA, weighed 241 kg when she delivered daughter Jacqueline in February 2007" (Glendary 77). Another fact that shows that humans can be very big and very small is about a small teenager. This teenager named Khagendra Thapa Magar is 65.58 cm. These two facts show that humans can be very big but also can be very small.
People can do anything for money. Wei Shengchu has the most needles in his head. "Wei Shengchu had 2009 needles inserted into his head..." (Glendary 78). Another reason we know people can do anything for money is because of Tom Leppard. Tom Leppard is the former most tattooed guy in the world. 99.9 % of his body is tattooed. These fact explain that people can do anything for money.
Old people are not always like people think they are. Bette Calman taught yoga for 40 years. "At 83 years old, Australia's Bette Calman is the oldest woman to teach the Indian mental and physical discipline of yoga" (Glendary 83). The oldest athletic record holder goes to 100-year old Ruth Frith. This Australian person threw a record of 4.07-m. These facts suggest that old people are not always like people think they are.

Judo is a very common sport around the world. Ryoko Tani won the most judo world championships. "She won a record seven women's World Judo Championship titles in 48 kg category between 1993 and 2007..." (Glendary 233). Another fact that shows that judo is a very common sport around the world is that Vito Zaccaria made the most throws. He made 30 throws on the same person. These two facts show that judo is a very common sport around the world.
Football is the best sport known to man. Brazil are the best at beach soccer. "Brazil have won the FIFA Beach Soccer World cup on 4 of the 5 occasions it has been held" (Glendary 238). Another reason why football is so interesting and is the best sport known to man is because of the most goals scored in a world cup finals. 171 goals were scored by the 32 teams in the world cup finals in 1998. For the following reasons football is the best sport known to man.

Birds can be very fascinating animals, the ability to fly is not given to all animals . Birds can be very heavy. "The heaviest of all birds is the ostrich" (Glendary 64). The ostrich can weigh up to 156.5 kg and can grow to be 2.75 m. The fastest bird is the gray-headed albatross. The albatross can go 127 km/h constantly for more than 8 hours. For these reasons birds can be very fascinating.
Mammals have the ability to make babies that go out without eggs (5 exceptions). The giant panda is the hungriest bear. "It must eat up to 38% of it's own weight in bamboo shoots each day" (Glendary 66). The smallest mammal known to man is the bumblebee bat. It's length is of 29-33 mm. As stated mammals have the ability to make babies that go out without eggs.
Plants can be incredibly tall and old. Cypress trees are the trees that live the most. "A cypress tree known as Sarv-e-Abarkooh is a tourist attraction in Abarkooh, Yazd, Iran. It is estimated to be over 4,000 years old and has been declared a national monument"(Glendary 69). The tallest hardwood tree is an Australian swamp gun tree known as Centurion is the tallest tree. It is 101 meters tall and has a diameter to 4 m. These reasons show that plants can be incredibly tall and old.
I look forward to this annual update each year. There are a lot of goofy records here, but also some interesting tidbits as well.
This volume begins with "Fire" as a category. Here, we read of the largest gathering of fire breathers ever (269 people got together at Eindhoven in the Netherlands); we see the largest flaming image using candles (the image depicted the logo of the Sandoz company [Pakistan]); most people burned at the stake (133 witches were burned on one day in 1859 near Leipzig, Germany).
Randomly turning pages yields other records:
Oceans and seas--Oldest seawater (the water at the bottom of the 12,000 foot Canada Basin has been unstirred for several thousands of years); the warmest ocean (Indian Ocean); Newest forming ocean (the Afar Depression in Ethiopia).
Insects and arachnids--Largest spider (a male bird-eating spider, with an 11 inch long span--ugh!); largest beetle (a beetle from Africa, coming in at 3.5 ounces [doesn't seem that bad to me]); hardiest beetle (1,547 were living in a bottle stoppered for 12 years).
Human society--Most dangerous country in which to be born (Afghanistan, featuring such negatives as unbelievably high infant mortality rates [257 deaths per 1,000 live births]).
3D cinema--first full-length 3D movies (in 1953, French, Indian, and Japanese 3D movies were released); most expensive 3D movie (A Christmas Carol, released in 2009).
Roller coasters--Fastest (Ring Racer at Nurburgring in Germany at 134.8 mph); Most expensive (Expedition Everest, for $100,000,000); tallest (Kingda Ka at Six Flags Adventure in New Jersey--456 feet high; it6's also the second fastest roller coaster).
Baseball--Most runs batted in a World Series game (Hideo Matsui, 6 for the Yankees in 2009, tying Bobby Richardson); most games played at shortstop (Omar Vizquel, 2681); most postseason wins by a manager (Joe Torre, 84 wins).
Water sports--Largest race (13,755 participants swam the 2009 Midmar Mile in South Africa); Oldest Olympic canoeing medalist (Josefa Idem of Italy at nearly 44 years of age).
Another year, another set of wacko records! As always great fun. . . .
I mean I personally am not one to get all up into the hype of these things. Mainly for the reason that if I allowed myself too I would certainly then have to try to break some sort of record and it sounds like a bit more work than I'm in to (haha). And that's why you'll find I only own and therefore will only review a few. .....Now that being said I find them totally fricken awesome and unbelievable!!
i chose this book because it was sitting in the library and i wanted to read it.
this book fits in my bingo board category as 'a book published in 2010 or 2011'
Guinness world records 2011 is about people and places that hold world records in some weird, wacky and astonishing things. i enjoyed reading this book because i really like seeing all of the records that people hold because some of them like 'the world's longest tongue' are really amazing. the record for the longest tongue is 9.35 cm long! another record that i really liked was the dog with the longest ears. the longest ears were 13.5 inches long!
i would recommend this book to people who are interested in current records and people who like to be interested.
I've always enjoyed these books and 2011 was no different.
I enjoyed it. Especially things like the Redneck games. I liked the featured stories, such as the tallest man feature. I also particularly enjoyed the section on comic books, which was written in a comic book style and the sports section, cause I just generally like sports. Guinness World Records has amazing facts from human body to large things. One of the really cool things that I also found is that later in 2011 someone is making a car called the Blood Hound that can go over the speed of 1000mph!!!
Overall a really interesting book and a lot of fun to read.
I read this book because i have read the other ones. This book is "a book written in 2010" on my bingo board. This book is about the amazing people of earth that have achieved amazing things. A good example is a person has tongue is 9.35 cm! that is very long. Another record is a person that has tattoo's that cover 99% of his body. I enjoyed this book because it has lots of records that blew my mind. Some of the records were disgusting though. I recommend this book to people who like weird facts.
This book fits the " A book written in 2010 or 2011 " blog in my bingo board. I chose this book because it looked very bright and fun to read. This book is about all of the 2011 records being set or broken by people, animals, technology and more amazing things. There are many records in the book which I saw and was amazed by, for e.g the man with the biggest nose, Mehmet Ozyurek who is from Turkey, his nose is 8.8 centimetres!!!!! I recommend this book to anyone because it is very interesting and amazing, even to people who hate reading.
It's a while since I read one of these and I was disappointed. I felt I was reading a kids book - maybe I was? The only featured records seemed to be ones that were broken that year, regardless how obscure or uninteresting they were. It made the book appear random rather than a reference book. Also the records from around the world at the bottom of each page seemed like a weak afterthought. Still, I learned about Sebastian D'Elcano's first circumnavigation of the Earth which led me to reading Antonio Pigafetta's first hand account of the voyage, so not all bad!
This was my first time to actually read a Guiness World Records book all the way through. (O.K. I'll admit to skimming the sports records.)
I enjoyed it. Sure lots of inane records, like the first redneck games. I liked the featured stories, such as the tallest man and the Dr. Who feature. I also particularly enjoyed the section on comic books, which was written in a comic book style.
This is one of the rare books on my shelf being enjoyed by the whole family, including the Kenyans.
Guinness World Records 2011 Is Another Great Book Of Record Setters Around The World Being A New Book Is Published Every Year It Is Extremely Popular Around The World. With 287 Pages It Is A Large Book, And Measures Up To 9 x 1 x 12 Inches So It Is Close To A4 Size. Also This Year They Haven't Added 3D Or A Special Effect To The Book Next Year Will Be A CD E-Book
This book goes under my bingo board as a book written in 2010. I read this book because heaps of people said it was a really good book and of course for the records.
This book is about random people making weird and wacky records such as how many underwear can a man put on in a minute. This is a very entertaining book and also has pictures.
I like the cricketing page. I hate the first 10 pages. I would recommend this book to anyone of any age.
I loved these books as a child, and even though I have not yet read the 2011 version, I am sure it is just as good as the ones I would read in my youth. These books are a great way to expose children to informational text, mainly because children are fascinated by all the strange, unusual or "cool" content that is in these texts.
The Guiness World Record is about all the new records that were broken in 2011. For example the longest some body can stay in the air when they jump. Another one is who is the tallest person in the world . Also the person who ate the nastiest thing in the world i can wait to read the 2012 version.
Guinness Book of World Records has amazing facts from human body to large things. One of the really cool things that caught my mind is that I found out that hopefully later in 2011 somone is making a car called the BLOOD HOUND that can go over the speed of 1000mph!!!
This book had a lot of cool facts that if you were to try to remember everyone it would take years to do. This book has no charecters but it was interesting notheraless. i would reccomned this book to anyone who likes to read books that have cool facts
Was a very enjoyable book, it had a lot of different facts. It had records in sports, such as the colts have the record for most wins in a single decade. There are also records on many other categories. My favorite section was probably the sports and the car sections.
I bought this for my information and fact loving son. It has lots of interesting tidbits, but he didn't really take to it because he finds several of the visuals disturbing and doesn't want to run into them when paging through. Not for squeamish people.
This boom shows the wacky things people have done for fame. This book is fun to all and any one wanting to break a record needs one.The book is fun for showing off and showing the potential science behind every record.
found this in my room so yes we’re gonna log this shiii even though i only liked the pop culture category bc twilight: new moon broke some biggest first day gross record in the theaters as it should and the internet category bc the kanye & taylor mtv awards moment won the greatest meme of 2011
I have read these for the last few years as my brother loves them to bits. This year I have to say was a dissapointment. Something which I cannot quite put my finger on is not right about it.
