Second reading. 5 stars for first half + 2 stars for second half = 3.5 stars.

The reason for the rating is that he grew up and left the area where "roads seldom curve," and I found the rest of his story to be less interesting. Why? Well, because I was born and raised in that land of straight roads and I know the area like the back of my hand. No, that's not quite true. I know it better than that.

For someone who has no personal interest in the area, the rating would probably be 2 stars.

Allen does a great job of describing growing up in Delta farm country during the depression. Like so many families up and down the Mississippi River Delta, his people worked hard, worshipped hard, and found time for some fun and togetherness. Through the eyes of a young child, the realities of the transition from sharecroppers to corporate farms begins to take hold.
