Loved the book series, excellently built story and very week crafted characters. I would recommend this book for any fiction lover.
The story is about Ujjain, the Samrat of Ujjain, King Vikram has won the war against Maghad, Kuru and Matya with the help of Guru Bhargava. The fact that mystic powers and weapons existed and are in hands of Ujjain has shaken the enemies and also has raised interest in far away lands.
Shamash, who was a trader from far lands now plots to gain the knowledge of these divya astras and their powers to become the ruler of the lands. So he seeks the help of Greek king for men and money to gain these and along with it Ashwathama to learn about immortality.
Shiva, son of Surya and grandson of Guru Bhargava is now being trained by guru dev and is learning many mystic powers. Guru Bhargava leaves to learn and earn more knowledge and so sends Shiva to Kasi to share a message to his fellow guru and then Shiva was to go to Ujjain for his study vacations till gurudev returned from/with his learning.
At Kasi he meets his childhood friend and an incident there encourages him to fight with the Kasi army. On learning that they were army of Ujjain, he shakes hands with the enemies of Ujjain to justify the undoing of his own kingdom on the face of winning the war and being a Samrat.
Bhairav, the first student of gurudev returns on learning that the divyastras have been used, and as per his guru’s words he was there to destroy them. Taking advantage of all this are the Kuru, Matsya and Magadh kingdoms.
Meanwhile Mahismati has lost their king, Vikram visits and learns the dying conditions of the land, in order to balance the situation he considers a peace talk and reduction in the taxes that were increasingly imposed on all the kingdoms including their allies along with enemies.
Shamash plays the dice, and I really loved his dialog “Ego, Ego Ego…”. Ego is the base for all the conflicts and he does hit the bulls eye on that. With his plan working perfectly he adopts Kali and Vikram, he convinces Bhairav to fight against Ujjain, influences Shiva wrongly to believe that Ujjain is taking an undue advantage of the divya astras, all this with the help of Kuru, Magadh and Matsya kings. His plan was to capture Ashwathama, and divya astras to build his own kingdom.
How Ujjain learns and faces all this ploy and plot, has Ashwathama been captured, could Shiva learn all about the cursed Gem. Did Shiva fight against his father Surya. All this consists the book. A lovely fictional story.
A personal note, this is nothing to do with the story of the book, I have read it as a fiction book and have rated it as fiction. However there are certainly things that our great youth take it for granted. Because the young thing questioning is learning, well Asking and Seeking lead to learning. Questioning is mere arrogance. I so wish people understand the difference. Well, a few things I would like to speak about.
There was a lot of questioning on why Lord Krishna did certain things, he was portrayed as a mere politician who was there to take his own agenda of sweeping off the entire Kuru dynasty. Partly true but he sure was not a mere politician who played plots. I will not extend a debate, but one question that came up multiple times in the series, “If Krishna was so powerful, why had he not given the boon of immortality to Pandavas”, “how can a mortal give a boon of immortality to anyone”. Firstly, immortality is never a boon, I do not think this needs to be justified, imagine how much pain one has to go through to live though all this loss, misery and changes if that person never dies. Having said that I would like to also mention that there were many Sages on this land who knew a lot, including the way to become immortal, which they never did. It is not the case that a mortal can or cannot give the boon or curse of immortality, it is about do you have the knowledge of it. There is a reason why only few were immortal against all those great people who lived this land.
One more thing, what is good today does not necessarily remain good for ever, a simple example, there was a day when Paper was used heavily. That resulted in cutting many trees and a lot otherwise unto effects, under those circumstances came the invent of Plastic, which lived for decades. Today? Plastic is considered lethal, we are turning towards paper again, with an added recycle, reuse of the material so we do not exploit the natural resources once again. Same is the case, the Kurukshetra was not just about Pandavas becoming kings. It is to eradicate the egos that are building over time. Everyone knows that there were hardly any great warrior left after that war. It was not the only huge war that was fought but it sure was the most catastrophic of all. Hence it became epic. Power that is needed and good at one time, can and might as well become evil over time. The thirst for power had to end, so everyone who could regain, resume and return the events that lead to this war was eliminated. There was none, there will never be any, another war like Kurukshetra ever again.
The reason I included this is to tell that don’t just carried away by the understandings or writing of the authors, great minds build great fiction but the truth never changes. Understand the reasons instead of questioning.
I would like to reiterate, this is my personal opinion and I have nothing to convey to the author or the readers. I am sure people would read it as a book and are rational in thinking what are facts.

Book : The Cursed Gem - Part 2
Author : Ashwini Malhotra

It is not so easy as taught. Though the war was about to happen, there were many forces which wanted to stop it. The title seemed interesting get a perspective from a different angle to the most famous epic.

What a wonderful read it was. Though this is supposed to be one book of one story, the book had several short stories, many of which we may have heard from our grand parents, but presented in such simplistic and interesting manner. It was so refreshing to read the stories, as a reader I could visualize each scene. It was like a movie with a lots of flashbacks.

Mahabharata is quite an interesting read. The author has added his own spin by bringing in an imaginary conversation of the epic story Mahabharata. The way entire narrative was built by gradually introducing individual characters, giving their background story, establishing their point of view and then building up to the imaginary meeting was quite interesting. All in all it was a beautiful read. Doesn't take more than a week to finish. And a must read to refresh memory of many stories we heard growing up and many other stories which we never heard.

The author has prepared this beautiful book with the hopes of sharing an engaging story with us as well as evaluating the events in the Mahabharata story as Indian history. From beginning to conclusion, the plot will hold your attention. I like the plot and found the author's delivery of it to be enthralling; it was an engaging read. grab the book & give it a try.

Book: The Cursed Gem - Part 2

Author: Ashwini Malhotra

Review: Ujjayni is one of the most spiritually acclaimed cities in the Indian subcontinent. The city holds such deep spiritual faith in its roots and the temples dedicated to lord Shiva attract so many piligrims every year. It is in this city the plot of this story is based. What we see as a city today was once a flourishing kingdom. The mystic weapons were behind the success of Ujjayni as an empire. The other kingdoms could never measure up to the kingdom, but that doesn't stop them from plotting the empire's downfall. They form alliances and all hell breaks lose. In these times of dooms comes Ashwathama, the warrior from Mahabharata. The one who's gem was taken away from him by Lord Krishna who had cursed him to immortality. He is looking for this cursed gem.

The book brings back old legends in a new perspective to the readers. There are stories that people don't know about in Mahabharata and warriors that people don't remember and this is a really interesting way to bring back these traditional tales. Not only it gives your imagination a place to grow and explore further, but it also takes you back to the roots of your culture which I think is a beautiful thing.

I highly recommend the book to all my fellow readers. It's mysterious and intriguing with a very engaging storytelling and a unique plot and I am sure the readers will love it as much as I did.

This is the 2nd part by author Ashwini Malhotra in the series. The story in this book very well dwells with the part 1 storyline where it all started with the clash between two powerful cities Ujjayni & Mahishmati which changed the course of Bharatvarsh forever.

A strong secret ends up not being a secret anymore and the kingdom ends up clashing with each other and thus peace is brought to an end. The author leaves no stone unturned to ensure the intensity and the powerful portrayal of the characters which many of us would have rode in history in a way that will make you intrigued till the very last paragraph of the book.

The writing style , the book cover design, and the story plot actually pays tribute to the title of the book and also justifies strongly and accurately being a sequel of the 1st part. As you go through the book, you will get to know how all the forces collaborated and conspired together to bring down the highly regarded Ujjayni empire which was ruling the kingdom, due to the reveal and origination of the mystic weapons.

Totally in love with the 2nd part of the book, really enjoyed it as I have also read the 1st part, What will happen after the war? Who will save Ujjayni and put things back in place?? What happens to all those powerful powers and who will be able to control it ? grab your copy today and enjoy the insightful historical read which is both entertaining and intriguing for all genres of readers.

Review:

This is the second book of Cursed Gem. And it is an interesting read.

If you don't know about the book, the setting is of 700 B.C Bharatvarsh, when it was divided in Mahajanapads and among them Ujjayni becomes more powerful one as the king and their commanders have some divya astra in their hands.

And the book starts right after the war where after defeating against Ujjayini, Mahismati, Kuru, Matsya are now facing problems to pay the increasing taxes and planing others way to find a way they can fight against them again.

While in another part of the world a businessman promises to the Greek king, he'll steal those divya astra and will give them in exchange of proper price.
As the many threats are looming ahead, the king of Ujjayini trying everything to supress it.

There's so many side of the story, so many things happening in the very beginning of the story. And when you listen their talks you can not decide which side you'll be on.

The whole story also revolves around Mahabharata, but the author gives it it's own twists, and many characters putting examples from the epic all through the book.

The plot, the setting, the characters are very interesting to read. As well as the mysteries, the Hindu cultures mentioned. And would definitely recommend if you like epic historical fiction.

The Cursed Gem - Ashwini Malhotra

The books is a sequel to a series but trust me it’s still a stand alone. It can be read independently and you will still not be clueless at any point. The title intrigued me from the first past itself and since I have read part one I was quite serious to know what’s in store in the second part. The Cursed Gem part 2 is when the lord of the past The Maharathi Ashwatthama reappears for the cursed gen and the wars between the kingdoms for two reasons to conquer and the old mystic weapon Divya Astra which is with Ujjayini Kingdom and also wanting to bring the fiend all to the glory of Ujjayni kingdom. All the characters and the plots are very well crafted. The story progresses flawlessly and smoothly inspite of so many characters. The writing and narration style of author makes the book very visualistic. The author through the stories and learning’s that he shares between the characters makes the narrative more engaging. Mythological fiction is a trend and there are numerous books out there but still this books is a fresher and ends with a cliffhanger leaving you for wanting more

The conflict was going to occur, there were many powers which needed to stop it. The title appeared to be fascinating get a viewpoint from an alternate point to the most popular epic.

However this should be one book of one story, the book had a few brief tales, large numbers of which we might have heard from our stupendous guardians, yet introduced in such shortsighted and fascinating way.

It was so reviving to peruse the tales, as a peruser I could picture every scene. It resembled a film with a loads of flashbacks. Mahabharata is a seriously intriguing perused. The author has added his own twist by getting a nonexistent discussion of the legendary tale Mahabharata.

How whole account was worked by steadily presenting individual characters, giving their experience story, laying out their perspective and afterward moving toward the nonexistent gathering was very fascinating.

All things considered it was a lovely perused. Furthermore, a should peruse to revive memory of numerous accounts we heard growing up and numerous different stories which we won't ever hear.

Ashwathama has been a legendary figure which doesn't fail to intrigue people.

I have read several books on him but this one impressed me a lot. In this book, with the impending doom, Ashwathama is back for the cursed gem.

The plotline is about how the ancient mystic weapons help in the reincarnation of the kingdom of Ujjayni. The many warring kingdoms are not happy. They form an alliance to defeat the Ujjayni kingdom.

But this means a lot of bloodshed and an impeding doom. This will lead to chaos in bharatvarsh.

How can this issue be resolved ?

Samrat wants to find a solution so that it wont be a doom and end the progress of the civilisation.

The lucidness of the book is what kept me hooked along with the interesting plot which made it a page turner.

The characters and the entire scenario brought the ancient society in front of my eyes. It was a great red and anyone who loves ancient mystical stories on India will surely love reading this book.

Highly recommended.

Indian Mythology still has many myths and history to get unfold. From time to time some authors bring mythology to readers as a book, for example - Ramayana and Mahabharata. According to me, books are the only things which can hold all kinds of history together. This book is a fictional ride from Indian Mythology and the writing of this book shows that this book has been written with good research work. The touches of Mantras just enhance the beauty of the creativity of the author. Maybe I had another reason also to like and recommend this book to mythology lovers because it has Ashwasthama on the cover and the story revolves around Ashwasthama too. The narrative of this book is straightforward and the line which gave me goosebumps from this book i.e. "We are fighting to establish peace in Bharatvarsh." Even though this story has references from thousands of years ago but this dialogue can be still effective. So just say Har Har Mahadev and enjoy this book.

The book, The Cursed Gem, is a highly recommended read for anyone interested in the history of our nation. It is a sort of retelling of Mahabharata but in a very unique way. It mentions Ujjayini, Mahismati, Kuru, Matsya wars. It has many other interesting aspects like Divya Astra.

It is written in simple language and perfectly chosen words that make it more interesting. The plot and presentation are also unique, which makes it easy to follow from beginning to end.

The author has done a great job at presenting this plot in a way that is easy to understand, but still gives you enough information to keep you interested throughout the entire book.

The title and cover are eye-catching as well, making it easy for people to pick up this book and start reading right away!

I have read the first part of "The Cursed Gem" some months back and I can say that as good was the first part, the second part is the best. It's like with the second part the story about Ujjayini, Mahishmati and the other kingdoms, their clash because of the royal secret goes on another level. I loved the way story moves forward and how it keeps you intrigue about what's going to happen next. I loved that, author has done amazing work in order to deliver such an amazing mythological fiction story. It's a historical fiction and quite unique. A must read.💕

Mythology is often believed to a collection of myths and shared beliefs poured down through the ages generation over generation. However, the author strongly believes that Hindu Mythology especially epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana are not mere stories but actual events that took place on our land. This is the basis of the author's work. The book presents tales inspired from Hindu Mythos in a new format.
The story starts in the land of Ujjayni, the most powerful kingdoms in all of Bharatvarsh. Being probably one of the only kingdoms to possess divine weapons or astras, no other province could match up to its power. The cursed gem being talked about here is the one taken away from Ashwathama upon being cursed.
The book has so many stories woven into one book. The way it has been told is no short of captivating. It is a visual spectacle in your mind. If you're a fan of mythological retellings and related stories, you'll surely find this fascinating.

The book gets back old legends another viewpoint to the perusers. There are stories that individuals have barely any familiarity with in Mahabharata and heroes that individuals don't recollect and this is a truly fascinating method for bringing back these conventional stories.

Mahabharata is a seriously fascinating perused. The creator has added his own twist by acquiring a fanciful discussion of the incredible tale Mahabharata. How whole account was worked by progressively presenting individual characters, giving their experience story, laying out their perspective and afterward moving toward the fanciful gathering was very intriguing

Great one
