My grandma gave me these words of wisdom just before she died.
Then she told me to run.
Because if the old witch is dying, then he needs a new one.
And that’s me.
This is my curse.
I am the vampire’s power.
I am the vampire’s strength.
I am the vampire’s .
And he is very, very hungry.

I hate him, but I crave him.
I want to be rid of him, but I also want him next to me.
I want to feed on him and sometimes I dream about him feeding on me.
It feels like a trick. Like abuse.
Like Stockholm syndrome.
But it’s not. It’s just… the blood.
I am the vampire’s scion.
I am the vampire’s slave.
I am the vampire’s .
And he will never let me go.

I am the vampire.
Once you make a deal with me, it’s done.
There’s no going back.
Once I bite my lip—
Once I bare my teeth—
Once I let it drip—
He’s mine.
She’s mine.
And together we are .

J.A. Huss never wanted to be a writer and she still dreams of that elusive career as an astronaut. She originally went to school to become an equine veterinarian but soon figured out they keep horrible hours and decided to go to grad school instead. That Ph.D wasn’t all it was cracked up to be (and she really sucked at the whole scientist thing), so she dropped out and got a M.S. in forensic toxicology just to get the whole thing over with as soon as possible.

After graduation she got a job with the state of Colorado as their one and only hog farm inspector and spent her days wandering the Eastern Plains shooting the shit with farmers. After a few years of that, she got bored. And since she was a homeschool mom and actually does love science, she decided to write science textbooks and make online classes for other homeschool moms. She wrote more than two hundred of those workbooks and was the number one publisher at the online homeschool store many times, but eventually she covered every science topic she could think of and ran out of shit to say.

So in 2012 she decided to write fiction instead. That year she released her first three books and started a career that would make her a New York Times bestseller and land her on the USA Today Bestseller’s List eighteen times in the next three years. Her books have sold millions of copies all over the world, the audio version of her semi-autobiographical book, Eighteen, was nominated for a Voice Arts Award and an Audie award in 2016 and 2017 respectively, her audiobook Mr. Perfect was nominated for a Voice Arts Award in 2017, and her book, Taking Turns, was nominated for an Audie Award in 2018. Johnathan McClain is her first (and only) writing partner and even though they are worlds apart in just about every way imaginable, it works.

She lives on a ranch in Central Colorado with her family.

I've never felt this way about a vampire book!! On one hand am like WTF did I just read and on the other hand am totally captived!!! When JA Huss said her spin on vampires was gonna be completely different she wasn't bullshitting! Paul is one of the most narcissistic and charismatic vamps I've ever read! I fucking hated his manipulation and gaslighting of all those around him.But this monster isn't like most vampires who hide what they truly are. Paul lets you see his true form which is a blueish-purple, like he is a bruise, just like the sky. His face is elongated, horns protruding from the top of his head. Long, thick horns with so many branches, they could be trees. His skin isn’t smooth and fresh, like he presents himself to this world where he does not belong. It is… hide. But even looking like this he pulls you in and your his to use and throw away when done. Charlie mansion has nothing on him! Hes a total sociopath but a beautiful one. This is a tale of vampires and black witches and everything we thought we knew about both has been lies. Black witches created vampires and now said vampires feed off their black blood to survive. And Paul wants to start his own little vampire family in American so he can become the most powerful of his kind, but first he needs Syrsee a young black witch who the guild has turned over to Paul so he can turn his Scion( hunter) Ryet and blood lover into a full vamp. Betrayed by the guild Syrsee is on the run trying to stay hidden from Paul but she ends up in a small town barely getting by until she meets a sexy hot hunk named Ryet who she has amazing sex with and falls for. But neither know that Paul has lead them both into his web and all his plans are finally coming together or are they?😉 I don't know what this author is smoking or taking but she is with out a doubt a fabulous storyteller and this book proves it! Can't wait for book 2 !!! Paul and his backstory along with the others has me curious! Another excellent read!! Until next time Luv's💕💋

Original and unpredictable!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙🤎💜❤️
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌏🌍
Character development: 😠☺️😋😎😘
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Duet Narration

The heroine: Syrsee - her grandmother, the “old witch”, is dying. Syrsee hasn’t seen or spoken to her in 10 years. Her grandmother left her at The Guild boarding school when Syrsee was 7 years old. She saved Syrsee that day, she is a black witch who should be dead, but she was able to go to school and college and is still alive because of her grandmother. Being a witch is in their black blood. The evil inside them can be powerful and can be stolen. Her Grandmother killed her mother after Syrsee was born in order to steal her magic.

The Heroes: Paul - Paul is a vampire who is awakening after a long sleep in the ground. He can’t wait for the old witch to die, so her magic dies and he can finally see the face of the witch he has been waiting for. He knows she will be beautiful, and he so does love beautiful things. Most of the vampire lore is nothing but ridiculous (sunlight, garlic, stakes, etc.), and they can only feed off the blood of a black witch. Paul is the only pure Vampire in North America. There are two others, but they have muddied bloodlines.

Ryet - he hates Paul, but he needs him. Paul found him when he in his late 20’s and was married with three children. Paul wanted him, and his family soon died in a fire. Paul made him an offer which he couldn’t refuse. He is now the scion, the minion of the vampire Paul. He feeds only off of Paul. He is in charge of tracking Syrsee and has been tracking her for centuries. He couldn’t find her when she was at The Guild, but now, with her grandmother dying, he is close to finding her and once her grandmother’s magic is gone, it is all but done.

The Story: Syrsee works for The Guild as the librarian. The Guild is an influential secret group that saves the world from evil. She has wanted to distance herself from evil and her family. The Guild had eradicated their entire line except her and her grandmother. Though now that her grandmother is dying, she felt she must see her again. She does, then she knows she must run because with her grandmother’s death comes the end of the protection spell her grandmother cast when she killed her mother.

Paul is the kind of cocky a-hole that comes from someone who has absolute power. He owns a mansion on a compound which is like a little town. It has tons of rooms, three swimming pools and a bunch of smaller houses surrounding it within the compound. He is the lord and master of It all. The two other vampires that he made live with him as do a bunch of half vampires that they created.

This was a weird one to say the least. Paul was quite a character, I see him a bit like Lucifer from the TV show, especially in the first season. He is completely selfish and all about what he wants and treats everyone like they are on Earth for nothing else but to serve him. And many of them are his actual slaves, so there’s that. He is extremely unlikable. Ryet is as likable as Paul is unlikable. He knows he is a slave to Paul’s blood, and he hates it and hates Paul because of it, but does whatever Paul wants because that is his lot in life.

This definitely wasn’t yours standard MMF romance, since Paul is such an odd character. He gets intimate with many different people and though he seems to love Ryet in a way, there definitely is no monogamy. The story was good and interesting. It certainly held my attention and got steamy in places, but it went to places I never could have predicted. I liked it though, because it was different and because it kept me guessing.

This book was told in multiple points of view via duet narration and was narrated by Ava Erickson, C.J. Mission and Finn Cassidy. Ava Erickson is one of my favorite female narrators, she has a soft, feminine voice which is very enjoyable to listen to. C.J. Mission and Finn Cassidy do a great job, but neither is one of my favorite male narrators. Though they did a fine job, and I am glad that different narrators were used for each of the main characters.

Sink your teeth into this vampire adventure. A black blood witch, A dashing vampire and his scion all intertwine in this paranormal journey. Syrsee is a witch with powers running through her veins. Paul is a vampire wanting a taste of those powers that have been a part of him for centuries. Ryet is the connection to them both. Everything you think you know of vampires and witches think again as this story dispels those myths into something much more…vicious. When a spell is broken whose destiny will be changed forever? What a well written pnr mystery that keeps you guessing the whole time. These characters have such depth you can’t help but want more of their story. Told in multiple POV

Blood lovers is of course so much more than vampires and witches. Those of us that read J.A. religiously know that a book from her is never just one thing. It's has layers. Multiple ones. This book is no different in that aspect.

“That’s how they get you, darling. With the beauty. Never forget, Syrsee. The Devil craves beauty. Even in himself.”

Blood Lovers is told in three different points of view:

Syrsee, a Black witch who has been hidden from an evil vampire,who wants her for her special blood. Now that her grandmother has died, the protection also falls away and Syrsee has nowhere to turn anymore.

Ryet, the vampire's scion, who has been hunting Syrsee. He hates the vampire but the seductive and enticing nature of the vampire is much too strong for Ryet to resist.

Paul, the vampire, who now that the old witch has died he can finally see the face of the new one who has been from him for so long. He will hunt her until he gets what he want.

This story was so captivating, so beguiling and sensual, it was very hard to put the book down at the moments where I just had to. I loved the three different points of view and I honestly can't pick a favorite out of them because they were all so good and absorbing to read. Also, this was a very dark read so be aware. All of the characters were getting betrayed left and right which made this story quite the rollercoaster of emotions.

Paul was a very very evil character but I also liked him in a way that I couldn't help myself. Maybe that was just part of his allure because don't get me wrong, he is a literal monster who has done a lot of fucked up things to get where he is now, especially what he's doing to Syrsee and Ryet.

Ryet was an equally intriguing character. We know that his wife and three children have died many years ago in a not quite accidental fire. When he was at his lowest point, Paul swooped in and made him his scion, his slave essentially. Ryet has hated Paul for this for years and yet he hungers for him.

Syrsee was also a characters that I loved reading about. She knows that the blood running through her veins is evil and that the vampire is looking for her. And then she runs into Ryet. Both don't know who the other is but they have an immediate burning attraction to each other and they fall for each other.

This would've been the perfect five star read for me if it wasn't for the insta-lust between Syrsee and Ryet. It made more sense as the story went on and more things were revealed but still it felt pretty damn fast for me and lately I'm more of a slow-burn romance girl. Still, this was just a minior thing and I did really end up loving Ryet and Syrsee. I really rooted for them throughout this book and hating on Paul for everything he did to them because wow, that shit wasn't very fun to say the least. It did made this story very twisty, sweeping me from one emotion to the other so I can only applaud the author for giving me all those feels.

So this was my very first book by J.A. Huss and I've got to say it most certainly won't be my last. Blood Lovers was one of the most unpredictable, original and unputdownable vampire books I've read in years. It was dark, sexy and oh so twisty. I simply loved it.

When I heard that JA Huss was writing a vampire book, I was like a kid at Christmas, giddy with anticipation. She can truly write anything and knock it out of the park. I trusted that these vampires would be something truly special.

And special they are. Syrsee and Ryet and Paul are each very special. They are unique. They are...

Beautiful. And frightening. And evil. But, not? I loved every word of this. The audiobook is divine and really adds an element to the story that I appreciated.

It is a standalone, has sexy times, has twists like only JA Huss can do, and I loved loved loved it.

Ah, my mind is blown by the possibilities of what's to come in the other books.
The beginning threw me off, kind of, with its slow pace, and the repetition of how Syrsee was betrayed by her grandmother. BUT.... BUT.... J.A. Huss once more showed what a brilliant storyteller she is. It's slow, and before you know it, you're invested in this crazy deep new vampire world and you felt as trapped in it, by that I mean: I was trapped in there in my own free will and it's so good I keep wanting more even if I didn't feel any attachment to the characters. I need more of them to better understand. Paul is true evil. That's a fact, Ryet, charming and fun Ryet is just as desperate as Syrsee, although not for the same reasons. I can't wait to see where the author will lead us next!

JA Huss has a new take on vampires. Keep an open mind as this went in a welcomed unexpected direction for me. Told from 3 POV's Syrsee; the dark blood witch, Paul; the demon vampire and Ryet; Paul's Scion. I can't help but feel for Ryet in this story as Paul has he underlying ulterior motives. This is just the introduction to this world.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

You think you’ve already seen and know all about vampires and their world? Well, here comes JA Huss to reshape it all! Huss has always been a mastermind at creating new worlds with strong willed yet sweet characters and very powerful resilient females we always fall in love with. I’ve never seen an author that can create so many plots with infinite twists and turns. With Blood Lovers she takes on the vampire world to change it forever.

Enter Syrsee, Ryet and Paul, the story of a Black Witch, unaware of her power, a very manipulative vampire who likes beautiful things and his loyal yet tormented scion. Beware: Expect the unexpected!

Total page-turner, I was in my happy place non-stop for two days. Loved the book and can’t wait for the next book in this new world Huss has masterfully created for us. (this book is a standalone).

I will be impatiently waiting. Worth reading a hundred times over. JA Huss, you did it again.

Paul, Ryet and Syrsee.

Sire, hunter and conduit, with hints of the big bad Darkness to come. Interesting twist on vampiric law with a creation theme touched on. Told a little too much for me, I’d have preferred it to unfold more naturally.

“He’s addicted to the beautiful. But his beauty is godlike. Almost too magnificent to look at.”

Paul as the Lord of American Vampires, scheming to create his new coven, with the assistance of the ancient Josef, craves beauty. I’m not sure he came across as evil per se. A manipulator and twisted genius, perhaps. I wanted the MM connection which was implied with Ryet, but wasn’t truly executed. I do know I want to meet Josef 😈

Overall, it’s left up in the air with an MC shelved, leaving an MF couple. Syrsee, overall irritated me as a character, with her age and mannerisms. She’s an all powerful black witch, I needed to see something of her amazing bloodline.

3-3.5⭐️

This one wasn't for me. The characters are one-dimensional and the plot is very muddy. There isn't enough world building to understand what is going on, and all of the narrators are unreliable. The story ends with a lot of storylines unanswered, too. The book was supposed to be a love story, but it really isn't. There are two characters who meet and find insta-love, but there is no depth to their connection before they are separated.

I don't think I will read more in this series.

A vampire PNR from Julie Huss, I was very excited for this one - it's a classic Julie read, where everything turns out to be completely not what you expected and you are eagerly left wanting more! Get ready for a vampire read that turns everything you thought you knew about vampires on its head!

Syrasee is the last in the line of the Black witches - her grandmother is dying and the world as she knows it is about to be turned upside down, as she becomes the feeder for the vampire Paul with her grandmother's death. She has been hidden all these years, the hunter has never found her, but he is now hot on her heels.....

Paul is the only real vampire in America, he has lived for centuries with his Black witches blood keeping him fed. His human self is beauty personified, his vampire side as evil and dark as can be. He loves to surround himself with beautiful things. He loves his scion, Ryet, his beautiful boy, and his Black witch Syrasee is the key to everything.....

Ryet hates Paul, but he also craves him, craves his blood, and so he does Paul's bidding. He has been hunting for Syrasee for years. He ends up finding her, yet not knowing who she is.....

A brilliant read from start to finish, I couldn't put it down..... I loved the twisted plot lines, the evilness of it all, but then its not really?! Told from the 3 POV's, I loved the push and pull between these 3, Paul is a master manipulator, Ryet is a slave to the blood but doesn't want Paul, and Syrasee finds out her whole life has been a big fat lie. There are some scorchingly hot MM and MFM scenes in here as well. I can't wait to read more of this series, not to be missed.

Blood Lovers is set in JA Huss’ new vampire world. I absolutely love Syrsee. She is a black witch who was abandoned by the people she loved from the time she was born. As much as the betrayal hurts her, she doesn’t lose hope, and there are many opportunities for Syrsee to give up. I absolutely rooted for her from the minute she appeared in the story.

Paul is the demon vampire. Thousands of years ago, he was banished from the European coven because he broke major coven rules. He was sent to America with two allies, Josep, and Lucia. Paul has several goals that he started working on when he was banished. The most important one for him is to get back in the good graces of the European coven. His hope is that Ryet will play a big role in achieving this goal.

Ryet is the scion. His job is hunting for Syrsee. Syrsee is part of Paul’s plan, and Ryet obeys Paul’s commands, albeit begrudgingly. Ryet suffered terribly after his wife and children were killed. The tragedy turned him away from good and made it easy for Paul to bring him onto his team. Paul has a plan for Ryet. Ryet wants to resist, but the pull of blood is too strong.

What I love most about Julie’s stories, including Blood Lovers, is that she puts her own twist on her books. If you read about vampires in the past, you will come to this book with a preconceived idea of what the characters will be and how they interact among themselves and with outsiders. Wipe that from your brain before you start reading. There will be dark characters, unexpected twists, and a super satisfying resolution. Altogether, this makes for a spellbinding tale that you won’t be able to put down until the end.

Blood Lovers is a standalone book in the American vampires series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.5 Stars — A fresh take on vampire lore, but a little too heavy on the explanations

Blood Lovers puts a cool spin on vampire mythology, weaving in a creation theme that gives the story a unique depth. I really liked how it explored vampiric law and the consequences of power—it’s not your usual “fangs and forbidden love” setup.

That said, I wish the story had trusted readers a bit more to connect the dots. It leaned a little too hard on telling rather than letting things unfold naturally. Still, it’s an intriguing read with clever world-building and a solid twist on the genre.

If you like your vampire tales with a touch of philosophy and a side of intrigue, this one’s worth sinking your teeth into. 🩸

I cordially invite you into the world of the American Vampires. JA Huss is bringing her fantastical take on a new world. This is not the vampire lore we are familiar with. This is a journey into the Darkness on another level altogether.

Shrouded in a purple haze of blood, lust, sensuality and shadows she brings myth and magic as she tells the tale of an exiled vampire from the Old World and his attempts at creating demons of his own in American.

Paul, Syrsee and Ryet are entwined in this fated wheel of evil, eroticism and a thirst for black blood. They dreamwalk in out of reality where the truth is just behind that lavender curtain just out of reach.

I was captivated from the first page. I have felt the bite of this vampire universe and cannot wait to see what else JA Huss brings.

I’m an OG Julie Huss fan so I don’t care if I’m biased. A vampire book and all the typical lore doesn’t apply? Let’s go!!!
I listened to the audiobook and really feel like the audio narration brought the characters and their personalities to life. Especially so after listening to Julie’s thoughts in the end of book shit.
I loved the book and cannot wait to read more about this world.

Ugh I did it again to myself…picked a JA Huss book book thinking this will be a MMF romance only to be disappointed because one of the MCs end up being thrown away! Why just why? The same happened in 321 and I promised myself I will not torture myself again. The author really has a problem writing true MM sex scenes as her male MCs sex scenes are never as descriptive as MF scenes. Then why bother? It lures in MM readers only to disappoint us at the end. Well it was a vampire story so Ofcourse I couldn’t stay away and I would have given it a 5 star if not for the disappointing casting away of one of the main MCs who the author tries very hard to make a villain even though she has written him as one of the most reasonable one…when the female MC does stupid things, it’s just her nature but god forbid Paul does anything evil…oh he is the worst. Then why include Paul’s POV in the first place and make your readers invested in his faith only to turn him into a different person at the end…Huss’s books seem to have the same formula…sold to readers as MMF…the one MC is always more obsessed with the other who happens to always be coerced into having sexual relationship because they somehow love/hate the other male…the author can’t stomach to write about the two MM having sex and they fool around but one of them always comes because they were thinking about the female…because god forbid if the two MMS make each other come…and at the end one just turns evil and gets chopped so we can have a happy ending for MF!

I will reserve my judgement for the next books but I don’t have much hope based on authors consistent pattern. If you are a MM reader, turn away…nothing to see here for you. I will update you on the next installment if things changed. If not, def not coming back to this author because nothing is worst then being duped into reading a MF plot when you are made to believe it’s a MMF…I read plenty of MF by the way…I just don’t want to be tricked specially in romance when happy endings are the point! And a story with three main characters cannot have a happy ending if you do away with one.

Blood Lovers is the 1st book in the American Vampires series by J.A. Huss and Narrated by: Ava Erickson, C.J. Mision, & Finn Cassidy.

Syrsee knows that her grandmother the “old witch” is dying. Syrsee hasn't seen or spoken to her grandmother in ten long years. For reasons that Syrsee couldn't understand her grandmother had left her at The Guild boarding school when Syrsee was just 7 years old.

What 7 year old Syrsee didn't know is that her grandmother had saved her that day. Syrsee is a black witch who should actually be dead, but thanks to her grandmother she got to go to school, got to go college, she got to have a life. Syrsee knows that being a witch is in her her black blood. She knows that the evil inside of her can not only be powerful but it can also be stolen. Her Grandmother in order to steal her mother's magic had killed her mother after Syrsee had been born.

Paul is a vampire who has been in a long sleep buried in the ground. He's been waiting for Syrsee's grandmother to pass, so that her magic dies, it's the only way that he can fully wake and finally see the face of the witch that he had been waiting all these years for.

While Paul doesn't know much he knows that the witch he's waiting for will be beautiful, and oh, does Paul long for beautiful things once again. The mortals have created vampire lore that is nothing but ridiculous (sunlight, garlic, stakes, etc.), the truth is that vampires can only feed off the blood of a Black Witch, not any mortal they choose. Paul knows of two other pure vampires, but they have muddied bloodlines, but Paul is the only pure blooded Vampire in North America.

Ryet despises Paul, but at the same time Ryet knows that he needs Paul at the same time. Paul had managed to find Ryet when Ryet was in his late 20's and was married with three kids. Paul wanted Ryet, but his family was in the way, but soon, Ryet's family soon died in a fire.

After this tragedy Paul makes Ryet an offer that he can't refuse. Ryet is now the scion, the vassal of the Vampire Paul. Ryet feeds off of Paul. Now Ryet is in charge of tracking Syrsee, he's been tracking her for centuries now. At first he couldn't find her when she was at The Guild Boarding School, but now that her Grandmother is dying, Ryet finds that he is closer than ever to finding her, and he knows that once Syrsee's Grandmother's magic is completely gone, Ryet will be able to finally find her once and for all.

Syrsee remains with the The Guild working as the librarian. The Guild is and remains an influential secret society that works to save the entire world from evil. Syrsee has always wanted to distance herself from not only her family but also from evil. The Guild had managed to eradicate Syrsee's entire family line except for Syrsee and her Grandmother. Although now that her Grandmother is dying, Syrsee felt that she had to see her again. Syrsee does, and then she realizes that she has to run because when her Grandmother dies, so does the protection spell her Grandmother cast when she killed Syrsee's mother.

Paul is cocky knowing that he has absolute power. He has his own mansion on a compound which is more like it's own little town than just a home. Paul has tons of rooms, three swimming pools and a whole bunch of smaller houses that surround his mansion. Paul is the lord and master of it all. There are two other vampires that Paul made live with him as do a whole bunch of a whole bunch of the vampires that they had created.

Paul was really quite the character I must say. He kind of reminded me of Lucifer from the TV Show, from the 1st season. Paul's this selfish guy who is all about what he wants and he treats everyone around him like they here just to serve him and him alone. And reality is a lot of the people around him really are his slaves. Honestly, I had a really hard time liking him.

On the other hand there's Ryet, as unlikable as Paul is Ryet is so very likeable. Ryet understands that he's a slave to Paul's blood and he hates that and he hates Paul for that, and yet he's forced to do whatever Paul wants because he has no other choice. He has to do what Paul tells him to do, it's just the way things are.

This is far from your normal MMF romance, especially since Paul is not only an odd character but also because he is so completely unlikable. Paul loves to go through so many different people, getting intimate with them and then discarding them. Although you can see that in his own way Paul does love Ryet. There is no monogamy here for Paul. I loved the story and I really did find it interesting and it enthralled me and I loved the spicy scenes. And I will say that this story went places that I never thought it would and I never predicted. This story was so different and it has twists and turns that I never saw coming and I was kept on my toes.

I loved listening to this story from the multiple POVs in this duet narration. It was narrated by Ava Erickson, C.J. Mission and Finn Cassidy. This was the first book that I had listened to by these narrators. I fell in love with Ava Erickson, she has such a lovely feminine voice that's lovely to listen to. C.J. Mission and Finn Cassidy did an amazing job and I found they really brought the characters to life. I loved that different narrators were used for each of the main characters. This really helped to bring the story to life.

“That’s how they get you, darling. With the beauty. Never forget, Syrsee. The Devil craves beauty. Even in himself.”

J.A. Huss has a knack for pulling the reader in, confusing the hell out of them, and then wrapping it up with the reader wanting more. Thank god for the EOBS because she usually explains some things are gives a little more insight into things you may not have picked up on. Needless to say I’m anxiously waiting for the next book because this is just the tip of the iceberg..

Once again, I'm floored. It's only the likes of a J.A. Huss who could get me to read about vampires and actually enjoy every word. And that's exactly what happened with Blood Lovers. Another wild ride from this talented author, I had to pay close attention to every detail as the young Syrsee has her seemingly settled world, and I do mean that a bit loosely, turned upside down as she begins to discover who she really is and the power she may or may not possess.

As we are introduced to Paul, who is the vampire behind all the ins and outs of Syrsee's journey, I have to admit he was indeed all kinds of charming and some of her grandmother's parting words to her were most definitely true. Huss's penchant for allowing a cheeky sort of humor bleed through her characters (no pun intended) is evident once more as Paul sets out to complete his years-long quest for what seems to be vengeance along with power. I actually chuckled to myself quite often at and through a good part of this book and was dare I say, enchanted with this otherworldly being. But again, that's the magic of getting to read a Huss story. You can't help but get happily lost in the worlds that she creates and fall hard for her creations.

We get the book in 3 POVs with Paul, Syrsee and the man I feel is the true star of this fabulously effed-up show, Ryet. That poor guy. My goodness, what he has been put through by Paul, all because the vampire deemed Ryet as his and, of course, because he's pretty. The story becomes as much Ryet's story as it is Syrsee's. Both trying to resist what is meant to be while simultaneously enjoying a few days of bliss without Paul's influence. In fact, what transpires between Ryet and Syrsee is quite erotic and sexy and most certainly adds to the allure they can't deny with both each other and what is ultimately planned for their very souls.

What I have realized is that there are no coincidences when it comes to Syrsee's role in keeping Ryet alive with her witchy-like blood along with Paul's supposed want to mold Ryet into his 'image' as it were while gaining his former power before he was banished away to Montana, of all places.

Although my head was spinning for a good part of this book, I can always count on Huss to explain exactly what is happening in the later chapters through a secondary character. With Lucia, one of Paul's two partners in crime, so to speak, taking Syrsee by the hand both literally and figuratively through yet another dreamwalk, which is a constant for all these characters and a way to see events in a very different light or dark, as the case may be, we get the full story and what the future will hold. I didn't trust nor did I like that nasty Lucia but with how the book ended, I'm beginning to wonder just who is in charge here.

With what transpires in the last chapter or two, will the prophecy that is Syrsee's very existence come to pass? Is Ryet her soulmate? Does Paul really mean any of the touching things he has said or is he just trying to get back into good graces so he can leave Montana for good?

There are a ton of unanswered questions but yet I'm good with that for now. My mind is still trying to wrap around all that I just devoured and how much I enjoyed my very first book that revolves around vampires!! I suppose it's Huss's amazing prose that keeps me coming back for more, no matter the genre or trope. She continues to set a stage unlike most others out there today, which is full of crazy-good emotions combined with addictive characters and the way they barge through their lives, not giving a lick about what others may think.

All I can say for now, and I know my review is vague and a bit all over the place but I'd hate to give more than I have away, is to state that I cannot wait for the next book in this series. That Blood Lovers is a must-read and kept me riveted, made me smile and now opened my eyes to a whole new world that I won't soon forget. A truly worthwhile read, I happily give this well-written book a huge 5+ stars!

4.25 Stars

I went into this story not really knowing what to expect and ended up being pleasantly surprised. I actually listened to this completely on audio and the narration was done by the trio of Ava Erickson, CJ Mission, and Finn Cassidy. I liked that there were three separate and specific voices for the three MC's. There is an author's note - from Ms. Huss herself at the end of the book and in that she talks about how this story was written "from the end of the beginning". At first, I didn't really get what she meant, but once I actually thought about it, that made perfect sense.

Why? Well, we are introduced to all of our MC's kind of in the middle of each of their own stories. We meet Syrsee - our FMC Black Witch - when she is already 28 years old. We learn that she has been hiding from a certain vampire and his "hunter." The "Guild," a coven of good witches, has been using their magic and resources to help keep her hidden. (There's also a back story with her grandmother, but basically she's been hidden by her grandma's magic and the Guild's resources).

We also meet Paul - one of our MMC's - and we learn that he is the defacto "Head" vampire in the America's. He was kicked out of Europe and banished to America several hundred years ago and he took 2 others with him when they fled - Josep and Lucia. But, we don't know WHY he was banished or much about what has been going on in his life other than the very few details that are parsed out as the story unfolds.

And then the last main character is Ryet. I felt like we got the most back story from his character out of any of the other ones. Basically, Paul chose him to be his "scion" 65 years ago and orchestrated his acceptance after the death of Ryek's wife and three children. Even though we were given the basic details of how and why Ryek chose to accept the offer that Paul gave him - we REALLY did not know the level of deception and forethought that had gone into all of this. We learn as the story gets to its end, the depths of the deception, and the levels of planning that had been going on for hundreds of years. We learn that Ryek and Syrsee really never had a chance.....but I digress...

So yes, the story starts at the end of the beginning and now, we are left with many, many questions about the how's and the whys that got everyone to this place. Did I have questions at the end of this book? Heck yeah. Quite a few. Am I interested enough to keep going? Absolutely.

We have a narcissistic, sociopathic power hungry vampire on the verge of actually succeeding in something that he has been attempting for hundreds of years. We have two other people - can't really call them innocent bystanders, but we can call them bystanders. These two people are incredibly important to Paul's plans of world domination, but they are beginning to learn information that has been withheld from them in the past. Each of them has spent a lifetime thinking that they are evil and irredeemable, but are learning that maybe, just maybe, there might be another way.

Am I interested? Again, I say...heck yeah :)

narration 4 story 3 1/2

Well that was one heck of a ride! I actually give it 3.5* because for the first time in a JA Huss book, I was so confused I had to reread ( or should I say listen again) to multiple passages because I had no idea what was going on.

Now in a lot of the books that's normal because as a J A Huss fan you've got to got to expect (and love) a lot of 180s. But some of this felt like oversight and not intention. Basic things not being explained.

Like when you think the grandmother was the feeder. And they refer to her as the feeder. Yet she wasn't the one that they found at the compound. What was going on there?

Plus a few other things. But overall an interesting book and I enjoyed that it's a new take on the vampire lore.

Right off the bat in the audiobook it starts with some kick-ass music and you know it's not going to be the same old story.

Really enjoy that Paul is an arrogant creature who knows exactly who he is. No apologies. No pining to be something other.

Syrsee comes off as quite a dip for a long time but I guess that's par of the course considering her life.

And Mr little bit of country, little bit of rock and roll with his foot in two different lives seems to be the most human of them all. Hating that he loves what he loves but loving his ability to hate it.

And I love that this author is being frank about the whole "where there is the light there is the dark". And just like their draw to paul, you are seeking it up your own free will.

I'm not going to go into more detail because everybody else reviewing is doing that.

Suffice it to say it was an interesting up and down. I will say the thing that really bothered me was The voice accent they chose for paul. I didn't understand until almost the end of the book and then it was like yep actually that s*** was perfect.

So for the most part like Julie says in her after book s***, I look forward to the next beginning of the story in the next book.

Ps. Listen to the audiobook, it's going to be a completely different experience than reading it

Syrsee has been in hiding from the vampire for her entire life. But with the impending death of her grandmother, the protection she had maintained to keep her hidden will be disappearing right along with her...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blood Lovers was a super sexy, mesmerizing, and completely addictive read! The entangled web of secrets between Syrsee, Ryet and Paul left me guessing up until this books very last page...
Syrsee is a black witch. Her kind are born evil and considered too dangerous to be anything but feeders for the most powerful of vampires. With her black blood and family history, Syrsee has been on the run her entire life to escape that very fate.
Paul is the one and only American vampire. He's powerful and mysterious... and he has big plans for the future...
Ryet was once a man who fell victim to Paul's attention. He made his deal with the devil a long time ago, but that doesn't mean he enjoys everything about the life that Paul provides...
Syrsee is being hunted... and it's only a matter of time before the world she once knew comes crashing down...
I loved this new, well-written and captivating series! The characters were incredibly interesting... and just a little bit evil at times! With lots of sexy moments and a jaw-dropping plot, Blood Lovers delivered a fantastic paranormal read that you'll just have to experience for yourself...
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
So you think you know about vampires and their lore? Well, guess again, because you are going to learn some very interesting things about this American vampire. The vampire Paul. So settle yourself in for a supernatural ride by JA Huss. This story is told from three points of view.
Syrsee is a black blood witch hidden away all her life. Hidden by the Guild. Word is sent that Syrsee's grandmother is dying. She grew up without her in her life but feels that she needs to say goodbye. The grandmother tells Syrsee things she needs to know about the vampire Paul. Be careful of his smooth talk and his promises.
Ryet is a scion of vampire Paul. Ryet is a bit of a rebel when it comes to vampire Paul's demands/requests. He eventually does what he is told, but he does it begrudgingly. Ryet hates Paul but craves his blood. He is Paul's hunter. He has been hunting for Paul's next black blood witch for years. Since she has been hidden she is almost impossible to find.
Vampire Paul is a smooth talker and quite the charmer. Banished from the old country centuries ago he is desperate to make his mark in America and be welcomed back home. The grandmother is the feeder to vampire Paul. She is dying and it is time for her granddaughter to take her place. The problem is he doesn't know who she is or where she is. He has Ryet on the case.
Syrsee ends up in Idaho. She was placed there by the Guild. She is to be the new librarian. While having a meltdown in her truck she meets Ryet. Neither knows she should fear him and she is who he has been hunting.
This book is a must-read! So many plot twists and turns. Just amazing! If you are a fan of JA Huss you know her books are NEVER boring. So let the purple mist envelope you and emerge yourself into the story.
Wow! Blood Lovers is a great way to start the new American Vampire series!
JA Huss is an exceptional writer whose stories contain elaborate worlds, storylines, backgrounds, and characters. It's obvious the work Huss puts into telling a great story. Everything is thought out, planned, plotted, and shared with readers for the best reading experience. Huss once again meets her high standards with her work Blood Lovers.
Blood Lovers is the  first book in Huss's new series about vampires and witches. When her grandmother passes away, Syrsee becomes  the last Black Witch in America. She's been protected by the witches of The Guild since her birth. She's been kept ignorant of all things adjacent to  the worlds of witches and vampires which puts her at a disadvantage in  her battle against Paul. Paul is the only vampire in America. He sends his favorite scion Ryet to hunt down and capture Syrsee. He needs Syrsee for her blood. What an amazing story surrounds these simple statements. This  is just a slice of what is sure to come from this renowned author.
This story is told through these three main characters' POVs: Syrsee, Paul,  and Ryet. Through them we learn about their lives past and present and about this new vampire world and their places in it. We also learn new vampire lore because JA Huss has created a whole new world. Don't assume to know anything because it's how it's been in countless other vampire stories. When JA Huss creates a world she starts from scratch deciding what will best explain what's happening in the story. This first book is a taste of what's coming in this new series and it's phenomenal! I can't wait to read more!
I highly recommend this unique first book in a new series by JA Huss.
