Gideon North wants a wife. She must be practical and hardworking. But above all, she must have a hearty constitution. Horribly injured and scarred from his Peninsular War service, Gideon does not want to deal with a wife who flinches every time she looks at him.
Gideon's estate manager Charles Borden was his sergeant in the war. Inseparable but almost always at odds, the two men agree that Sarah Whitley is the perfect wife for Gideon. Strong, beautiful and intelligent with a dry sense of humor, Sarah bears her own marks from a life spent in the shadows.
When Sarah learns to let go of her past fears, she frees both men to acknowledge the love and attraction that has always existed between them. The three become intimate but the eroticism of their encounters in the bedroom does not guarantee happiness. Gideon's defenses mire them in the past. Only together can Sarah and Charles break through to build a future with Gideon.

Series: THE BIRMINGHAM REBELS BROTHERS IN ARMS THE SAINT'S DEVILS THE 93RD HIGHLANDERS MERCURY RISING
★★★★★ This is a comfort re/read for me and I felt like I needed that earlier this week so out comes Gideon, Charles and Sarah. Last time I read LF was in 2012, before I did reviews, so it's getting reviewed this time around and retagged.
I'd forgotten how much humor, dry and otherwise was in this series, especially this one. Gideon wants a wife, however, between his personality, his damaged body and requirements, this has been a harder task to complete than expected. Until Sarah who has her own damaged body part that she's self-conscious about. In short order, a deal has been made and accepted and Sarah is Gideon's new wife. (Whenever I read historicals, I'm reminded of how little love comes into play in marriage - it's a bargain made not a love match in most cases.)
Gideon is very unsure of being able to fulfill his marital duties because of his damaged body and what Sarah might think of it so he persuades the beautiful Charles to accompany him to Sarah's deflowering so she'll have something lovely to look at and Charles can assist him. However, Sarah surprises everyone with how down-to-earth, caring and sensuous she is.
There's a twist as well, that Charles and Gideon have unfinished business between them that until Sarah with her love and acceptance, neither has been brave enough to confront.
I'm such a sucker for damaged heroes and heroines and love ever after. This has it in spades with humor to boot. This is probably my favorite in this series.
Gideon North wants a wife. Horribly injured and scarred from his Peninsular War service, Gideon does not want to deal with a wife who flinches every time she looks at him. Gideon’s estate manager Charles Borden was his sergeant in the war. Inseparable but almost always at odds, the two men agree that Sarah Whitley is the perfect wife for Gideon. Strong, beautiful and intelligent with a dry sense of humor, Sarah bears her own marks she has a birth mark on her face that she hides under big hats. This was a good book better than the last one to me. Charles has been in love with Gideon since the war and although the two only had sex once they still loved each other, but where to afraid to say anything to each other. The conflict is mostly centered around Gideon's coming to grips with his experiences and injuries in the war, and the insecurity and hesitance between the two men to fully accept their erotic feelings. The conflict is believable and tightly interwoven with the developing sexual and romantic relationship. Charles and Sarah are both so very open hearted and unselfish in their coming together to reach out to Gideon. I love reading and listening to menage this book was hot and well written "read". This book was filled with a lot of emotions Sarah learning that it's ok to love two men and the two men learning to love each other and her. Charles gave her the courage to be her own person and be herself. This book was really good and I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series and I am hoping that it is as hot as this one.
I liked this one, but it was yet another dip in the series for me. North's mood swings and his and Charles' inability to communicate became quite grating, and the story itself was just too long to maintain that amount of tension and melodrama.
This isn't Pulitzer Prize winning stuff. This is erotic fiction. So if you're in the mood for something worthy of a Pulitzer, look elsewhere. If you are, however, in the mood to read a dirty story about a hot threesome with likable characters and an engaging plot, you can't really go wrong with this one. So much erotica is focused solely on the sex, and I won't lie and say this book doesn't contain a lot of sex, but what sets Kane's work apart from some others I've read is her ability to actually give her characters personality, and to actually weave a story in between the steamy stuff. I liked this first book quite a bit, but there are a few in the series I will probably be rating higher simply because I liked the storyline and/or the characters a little more.
Contains m/m and m/m/f sex scenes with an insanely high steam factor, so if you're a pearl clutcher, don't bother.
I know, I know, I jumped out of order from book three to book 7. I have to say, though, that while the sex was not as smokin' hot as say, book one, this is the best Brothers in Arms book for me, yet. Not necessarily the emotions, either, as some of the other books have more of a true love feel. No, this one had more meat. (Oh stop you dirty minds) It had more characterization, more real problems, and more of a nod to the difficulty of a threesome. It also had far more historical detail, which I've been craving. Well done!
Just reread this one AGAIN. Oh, mannnn, is it good: emotion and growth and healing and love from all three main characters. In general, I am not a fan of ménage or multiple partner stories, but this one worked well because their roles and relationships were so well defined - both before (with Gideon and Charles) and after Sarah arrives, which then becomes an area of healing as they navigate the new ways they each live their lives.
That’s one of my favorite tropes, I think: a damaged hero coming to terms with a changed life and considering the “before” and “after” as a complete person.
Also, this is one of the hottest books ever. Makes me feel stuff and, like, FEEL stuff.
I am impressed with the way Samantha Kane appears to write about exactly the same thing in each of these books (you need to suspend belief that menage a trois are so prevalent and there are plenty of winsome girls ready to fall into such arrangements) and yet they can be very different. This was an unusual romance in that the 'hero' is disabled (besides the obligatory scars he has lost a leg). It was so refreshing to have someone disabled portrayed as not just sexually active but virile and sexy. As before the characters are what make this book, especially the fact that they aren't perfect or even good tempered.
Lots of swinging back and forth on this one, lots of miscommunication and self-pity and refusals to understand the other person's viewpoint. Yes, it all got tiring.
Gideon and Charles were inseparable during their time in the military. But when Gideon was gravely injured, disfiguring him and causing the loss of one of his legs, he became bitter and angry. But Charles never left his side, no matter how much Gideon would jokingly kick him out.
Now Gideon is ready to get married, but he worries that his deformities will hinder his chances for marrying. When a marriage with Sarah -- a woman with a large birthmark on her face -- is arranged, they form a bond over their struggles with looking different.
And in the meantime, Charles is there to help them learn each other. Because Gideon has decided he can't be with Sarah without Charles. And as time goes on, the three of them come to fall in love.
I really loved this one. I have come to see that one of my absolute favorite mmf tropes is when the two men are long time best friends and one of them is sort of taking care of the other one after a physical or emotional injury. I know it's so specific! lol But I love the bond that is formed between the two men because of the circumstances and the love that has already grown between them.
Gideon and Charles bicker and fight a lot, but you can tell that they care for each other so much, even in the beginning. It just tugged at my heartstrings to see them come to terms with their feelings for each other.
And Sarah really was the medicine they needed to heal and grow. I really loved to see her growth as well. She is innocent, but not naive. I liked her sense of adventure and her love and acceptance of Gideon and Charles.
Together these three are probably my favorite throuple from the series so far. I just loved them. There was so much brokenness that needed mending and they all stepped in to help each other. It was so sweet.
And the sex was hot too! As usual the smut was perfecto. I don't think the author has ever gone wrong with that in this series! lol
Overall a great book. One of my favorites from the series. Loved it and loved Gideon, Charles, and Sarah!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
There is so much hurt, anger and pain in this one, but it somehow is such a wholesome story courtesy of Ms Kane that it astonishes. This entire series are a combination of hot military men, tortured heroes of heroine’s, finding their happy through some hot heavy bedroom activities. This one had a damaged and seriously injured hero who decides he’s not worth loving but he needs to get married. He does and decides he needs to have his friend along to help his new bride. There is a lot of exploration, sarcasm, wit, humour and love here too as with the entire series. This series blends humour, sarcasm and wit so well between each character giving them so much of life and personality. Each character has their very own personality on these pages that it’s easy to distinguish between all of them.
Read this for Hot military men Two men learning to love each other New bride giving her husband more to love Tortured war hero Unconventional marriages Angst, humour and love All those bedroom antics
if i'd had a shot for every time the characters in this book attempted to work through their issues using sex instead of actual words, i'd be very drunk right now. and might have enjoyed the book more tbh.
i get that this is more erotica than romance but it was just really weird to read about all the intense and v descriptive sex they were having one page after having a knockdown, dragout fight that resulted in someone storming off. sarah's presence made the whole book a lot better bc without her, it was just. two dudes who kept misunderstanding and miscommunicating and being surprised that all the sex had not automatically made the other dude a mind reader.
This book quite surprised me in that I enjoyed the story even though it was a historical romance, which would not be my usual choice.
The story is of how Charles, Gideon and his wife Sarah all lived together and brought out the best and worst in each other. Gideon was badly injured during the war, Charles having saved his life and this wasn't their only bond. They had strong feelings for each other than neither dared explore, though there had been a one-off incident neither could forget.
The story explores the relationships between the three of them in every possible way, both mentally and physically!
My favorite of this series up to now. The characters were well developed and the love stories among them so poignant I am sure it will be one of my re-read.
I get the idea of these books being mainly of sexual content, but the couple ones before this were actually kinda boring. This one was more elaborated and explored the issues this couple had on a different level. And it was possible to see how they dealed with their insecurities, besides their sexual encounters. And that made the sexual parts even sexier.
We finally get Gideon North and Charles Borden’s story. We first met these two in RETREAT FROM LOVE. Anne Goode had gone to Blakley House to accept an offer of marriage from Gideon. She was trying to save Freddy from making the mistake of marrying when she felt she was unworthy of the title of Duchess. Thankfully Freddy and Brett came to their sense and married Anne. That, of course, left Gideon without a wife. This book picks up with Anne, having picked up the habit of interfering with people’s lives for Freddy and Brett, telling Gideon that she has found the perfect bride. Gideon isn't very optimistic about this claim but he is willing to give it a try. Gideon has had some trouble finding someone suitable as wife because the burns and injuries he suffered during the Peninsula War. When the young woman shows up for the interview both Charles and Gideon are surprised. Sarah has a port wine stain on her cheek. While Sarah is shy and uncertain because the birthmark she is a strong practical woman that isn't squeamish. It isn't long before Gideon and Sarah are married and in short order Charles is added to the circle. Sarah is the healing balm that brings Gideon and Charles together finally.
Gideon North has dealt with his disability for years and while not comfortable he has accepted his limitations. Part of the problem is that he is afraid as I am sure all who have lost a limb are that he will fail if he tries to go back to the things that he enjoyed before being injured. He has never tried to get a prosthesis so he would be more mobile and be able to ride a horse again. Gideon is a strong, proud man that doesn't want someone waiting on him all the time. I think that he has been hoping to find someone to bridge the gap between Charles and himself. It didn't take long for me to see that Charles and Gideon really needed to communicate more. They have been dancing around their needs since Gideon was injured. Sarah isn't afraid for Gideon and with grace and patience she breaks through his defenses and shows him he is still man and that he can satisfy a woman.
Charles has blamed himself for Gideon’s injuries for six years. He is sure that if he hadn't pursued Gideon he would not have volunteered for the Forlorn Hope at Badajoz. Charles has loved Gideon for a very long time and it is killing him to see the man that Gideon has become. It takes several heated arguments for the two of them to hash out how they feel and what has been driving each o them all these years. At times it is almost funny that the two of them are so hard headed. I liked Charles he is charming and clever. He is also single minded when he wants to get his way. He is instrumental in restoring Sarah’s confidence in herself. I was very pleased to see these three come together as a single unit. The three of them are strong than any one of them is apart.
Sarah has lived with her birthmark her whole life and it has made her afraid to go out in public. It is sad that we as a people can’t accept those that are different without bullying them. Sarah is smart and understanding. She has raised her young siblings when her mother died. Now that her father has remarried she wants a home of her own. She wants children and a companion to share her life with. It pleased me very much that she was so willing to take on Gideon and Charles. I am sure that Gideon probably frightened her a little bit not because of his appearance but because he seemed so disagreeable in the beginning. Her bravery and willingness to stick with the two men was more than admirable. It doesn't take long to see that she is going to be the glue that holds everyone together. I enjoyed this book just as much as all the others. I will warn that there are m/m love scenes for those that don’t want to read this type of romance. As always Ms. Kane writes interesting characters that make you want them to have their own story especially Dr. Peters. He needs something that will bring him some peace and get him away from drinking himself into an early grave. I know that there is a story out there but it seems so very far away. We get to see many of the characters from the earlier stories which are always nice. I just wish that we would get to see more of Valentine, Kurt and Leah. It would be nice to have an update on them.
This is not only my first Samantha Kane book, but also my first historical-set story. As a big fan of MMF erotica, I try not to be too picky about the setting which is why I was open to a regency-set series where the male heroes are war veterans. Instead, I’ve become increasingly picky about the three main characters relationship and how the author takes her time to develop each character and make such an unconventional arrangement work in the long run. Normally, I start a series from the beginning, but for some reason I started with book 7. Thankfully, the book works as a standalone and overall was a great read!
In this one, our three main characters are Gideon North, Charles Borden, and Sarah Whitley. Gideon has been tragically injured from the war, now lives with his estate manager and war sergeant Charles, and is looking for a wife. But not just any wife; Gideon requires a wife who won’t shudder when she sees his scars, and who can handle his acerbic personality among other things. Here enters Sarah, a shy, innocent, and smart young woman who is also seeking a husband, who will accept her scars as well, and help her create the life she’s always dreamed of. When the three meet, it is clear that this is an ideal match. Three completely different personalities but all of which complement each other. Sarah really brings a balance to the relationship, and as she grows, she is also one of the main reasons both men change for the better and come to terms with their feelings for each other.
There’s a sense of realism for that time period that I really enjoyed while reading the story. I loved that Sarah at the beginning knew almost nothing about sex but was willing to learn, and demonstrated a beautiful inner-strength during these scenes. While the wedding night brings all three together for the first time, it’s not the way you expect. Gideon is self-conscious about his scars and amputated leg, and needs Charles as a “buffer” to ensure the experience is a good one for the very innocent Sarah. While Gideon and Sarah do end up consummating their marriage, Charles as the third, doesn’t have intercourse with Sarah as he is not her husband and it wouldn’t be appropriate – at least not at this point. It is important to note, that with the exception of Gideon and Charles, they are all learning about each other. Very little time has elapsed from Sarah’s first meeting of these two men and the wedding night, but as the story progresses, they continue to discover each other, and it is as time moves forward that you see the impact Sarah makes on their lives and vice versa.
Charles and Gideon do have a brief intimate history, but since the war and Gideon’s injuries, both refuse to deal with their feelings and what happened so many years ago. Sarah with her innocence initially struggles to understand what’s going on between Charles and Gideon, but she is instrumental in the two of them working past their issues, confronting their fears, and finally acknowledging what they want and need from each other. This discovery is not immediate but a beautiful progression that really strengthens the triad’s relationship to give us readers the story, sex scenes, and ending we wanted.
Overall, the sex scenes are beautiful and well done. They are not as graphically depicted as a more contemporary-set erotica would have been, but I think that’s appropriate. I will say that for me personally it wasn’t as “hot” as other MMF books I’ve read, ones where the sex scenes get the reader all hot and bothered, which is I think my only minor criticism. That being said though, based on this story, it was a great read and I plan on reading the rest of the series… but starting from the beginning this time.
Even the most strongly defended heart is no match for the conquest of love.
I enjoyed this novel. The heroine, Sarah, is delightfully well rounded. Quiet and practical with a soft heart, Sarah suffers with a troubling birthmark that has set her apart in society. Gideon North suffers with the lingering effects of his service in the Peninsular War and the disfiguring injuries he acquired there. His injuries give him an interesting depth that is easy to sympathize with even while his stubbornness invites frustration. Charles Borden is Gideon’s estate manager and closest friend. Charles was my favorite character of the threesome. He’s down to earth, emotionally sensitive and an all around good person.
Reading a Regency romance about a three-way relationship requires definite suspension of disbelief. Doubly so that there was a whole group of them who knew each other. But it’s no different than believing there were scads of handsome, unmarried dukes running around working as spies for the Home Office. Ms. Kane does a great job of presenting the relationship and how it develops in a credible way that somehow works very well.
The conflict is mostly centered around Gideon’s coming to grips with his experiences and injuries in the war, and the insecurity and hesitance between the two men to fully accept their erotic feelings. The conflict is believable and tightly interwoven with the developing sexual and romantic relationship. Charles and Sarah are both so very open hearted and unselfish in their coming together to reach out to Gideon.
The sex scenes are hot and filled with emotional depth from the beginning, even though the two men do not know the heroine well. Ms. Kane handles the wedding night perfectly. On that night, it’s easy to believe Sarah is a woman of her times; shy, unknowing, yet her natural sensuality makes her curious and willing to experiment.
Later it’s a little harder to mesh Sarah's blasé acceptance of the heroes’ homosexual relationship with her being a Regency bride. I would have expected a young woman of that time to have been a little more surprised by men behaving in erotic ways with each other—especially if they were able to perform and enjoy sex with a woman. But this is a small point in an otherwise delightful book.
This was a mixed bag for me. Some good places and some less then exciting parts. Gideon has been terribly scarred in the war and hides out on his estate raising horses with his best friend Charles. Gideon needs a wife and picks Sarah because she doesn't fear him and has her own mark, a large birthmark on her cheek. Gideon and Sarah both want the marriage and get on well from the very beginning and I appreciated that Kane didn't pursue that as an obvious angst avenue.
Because this is Samantha Kane, we know Charles is going to come into the mix but I can't say I cared for him all that much. Gideon is short sighted, harsh, and an all around jerk sometimes, but he has reason to be and he doesn't try to be anything that he's not. Sarah is kind but strong and practical. She doesn't get caught up in petty slights and works hard to make everything work. Charles just argues, yells, and whines. He certainly has cause to from time to time...for example the wedding night that still makes me cringe a bit, but I grew so weary of it. I understood he loved Gideon but many time felt like sending Charles to his room so there could be some peace.
This is book 7 though, there are 12 men and 6 women who have walked this path before and Kane spreads them through her stories like butter to the books' detriment. I can't remember all these people, who their names are, and what they do, and does it really matter? The name dropping is not necessary.
However what Kane does really well is make a m/m/f a true menage, not just a m/m or a m/f with a third thrown in. And that's why I keep reading them.
I have enjoyed just about everything Samantha Kane has written, but this one has got to be one of her best. Kane writes M/M/F erotic romance featuring veterans of the Napoleonic wars. Her heroes endured the war by bonding, sometimes sexually, with another soldier.
In this book (seventh in the series), Gideon and Charles have settled in England to raise horses together. Charles saved Gideon's life on the battlefield, but Gideon was terribly scarred in body, Charles in mind. Their one heated encounter during the war has never been repeated. Enter Sarah, who is herself less-that-perfect physically. Together, the three of them heal each other of emotional wounds.
I absolutely loved this story and read the entire book in an afternoon. Love's Fortress is entirely character driven, with the tension focused on the fears and insecurities of the principals. I admit that I began reading Kane's books despite the M/M romance, which I assumed that I just wouldn't get. I was wrong.
Although this book does include scenes with characters from earlier books in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone.
Another great story. Gideon was a very captivating character that I enjoyed reading. The relationship between him and Charles was as beautiful as it was frustrating. This one will tug on the heart strings a bit. I must admit a shed a few tears here and there lol. I didn't care for Sarah to much but I did respect her and I admit she was good for the Charles and Gideon. I found her to be to worried about apperences. Even when she learned to accept her apperence she transfered those feelings to her relationship. It came across as she was embarassed almost I mean I understand the need for discretion in public and amoung strangers. But did she really need for a friend to tell her she could be herself and to make them all sneak around their own house to me was just ludicris. However I still loved this story it's great read.
Love this series. This was a great addition, all the characters were well written and the storyline flowed perfectly. I am intrigued by romance stories with characters that have a disability or affliction of some sort. Gideon has lost part of his leg in the war and is ashamed of it. He needs a wife but thinks that no one can love him the way that he is now. Sarah has lived her life away from society because of a birthmark on her face. She is fine with it but she knows that society and most other people are not, so she keeps to herself. Charles is Gideon's friend and Gideon wants to love Sarah using Charles as a go between and as a buffer. This is a great story about acceptance and love. Definitely recommend.
The latest in the Brothers in Arms series and every bit as good as the preceeding six novels. Perhaps this is just a bit harder to read because, while all the men in these stories are victims of the brutality and horrow of the Napoleonic War, the two men in this story not only have brought home inner wounds that don't seem to be able to heal, one of the men also has extensive external wounds that have come close to breaking his spirit. As in all these novels this is essentially a menage relationship but this is one of the stories wherein the conflicts are not easily resolved. Another great creation of a very experienced and good writer.
Another great book by Samantha Kane. I know I am reading these out of order but they all can be read as stand alone stories.
This is the story of one woman who brings realization to two difficult men of their love for each other. She heals them and makes the triad complete.
One a suffering soldier that lost his leg and what he thinks as his life in the war and the other man who has stayed by his side through it all and would give anything for his love.
It is very touching and the sex is good too. M/F/M as well as M/M/F scenes in this book. Very hot!
