Lorraine Heath has always had a soft spot for emotional love stories. No doubt because growing up, watching movies with her mom, she was taught that the best movies "won't half make you cry."

She is the daughter of a British beauty (her mom won second place in a beauty contest sponsored by Max Factor® during which she received a kiss from Caesar Romero, (the Joker on the original Batman TV series) and a Texan who was stationed at Bovingdon while serving in the air force. Lorraine was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, England, but soon after moved to Texas. Her "dual" nationality has given her a love for all things British and Texan, and she enjoys weaving both heritages through her stories.

When she received her BA degree in psychology from the University of Texas, she had no idea she had gained a foundation that would help her to create believable characters—characters that are often described as “real people.” She began her career writing training manuals and computer code for the IRS, but something was always missing.

She is dying of consumption and his love is her only wish

This story is very emotional and enticing, but I just could not bear so much death, illness, and heartbreak in one book.
The heroine starts the story suffering from consumption, the reason why her brother, after reading her diary and finding out she was infatuated with the hero, arrange her marriage to him.
The marriage is supposed to be in name only, with her returning home with her brother after the ceremony.
This arrangement is specially cruel considering the hero's true love had died in his arms in similar conditions.
They did not know, by the time, that consumption was a highly contagious disease and it was nerve-racking because not only she was going to die, but everyone around her was at great risk of catching the disease.
Luckily no one was infected, and obviously, there is an HEA, but the subject was a little too dense for my taste.
It is a good story in spite (or because) of that. According to the author notes, it was based on a true story of a female physician that recovered from the disease after moving to a dryer climate and started to walk long distances to see to her patients. This made the book more special.

I really enjoyed this whole series ❤️ Kit and Ashton story however was my fav by far (although imo Kit was not a rouge in anyway) Their story was ultimately about how one should live life to the fullest. Read the story and your see why Kit was my favorite of all the “rouges”

It's pretty common for each book in a series to slowly dip down in quality as things progress, and the rogues series is apparently no exception. These characters were... Well, nothing extraordinary. Ashton totters dangerously close to Mary Sue territory, Kit is the stereotypically tortured hunk with a dark secret, and the two of them never did much for me. The story was plodding and anticlimactic, and Ashton's "illness" not only made little sense, it made little appearance, which left me unable to sympathize because no one bothered to get a second or third opinion regarding her prognosis when she not only doesn't get worse, but actually seems to get better. Any man who loves his wife would take her to a doctor or two to see if there's anything more to be done. Kit talks to a doctor, but he doesn't take Ashton along until the end. Then there's Kit's constant attempts to meet death. His maudlin moping fits are enough to drive a monk to drink. Just... Ugh.

Never Marry a Cowboy is the third book in Lorraine Heath’s Rogues in Texas series. I love the premise of this series. Three Englishmen’s fathers paid to have their “wayward sons” sent to Texas to make their own way. In classic LH fashion…we have angst, passion, trauma, and tragic pasts. In this book we have an Englishmen who has become a Texas Marshal and a marriage of convenience with a heroine dying of consumption. This book also picks up with some action and outlaws!

This book is definitely the angstiest of the trilogy. I love a marriage of convenience and this one has a really interesting setup. Christian’s friend Daniel shows up asking Christian for a favor…he’d like to make his dying sister’s wish come true of becoming a bride and asks Christian to marry her.

Christian first says no but once he meets Ashton, he feels a pull towards her and wants to make her wish come true. Christian “Kit” Montgomery grew up in England as the Earl of Ravenleigh’s second-born twin son (his father even took a flaming hot fire poker to his chin upon birth to ensure no one ever mistook him for his older twin, the heir apparent). If that wasn’t a rough enough time, Kit was also in love with his twin’s wife, who ended up dying before he was sent to Texas. This book definitely delivers on the feels and pulls on your emotions starting with the prologue. But cut to 1870, it’s been 5 years since he arrived in Texas and Kit has become Marshal of Fortune. I loved seeing Ashton’s growth in this book, she had always been frail growing up and treated very delicately, but Kit pushes her (in a good, but challenging way) and brings her so much joy. I loved seeing their trip to Galveston and really becoming friends and getting this time spent together but alone from others. Kit has a very close relationship with his twin brother and it was fun and interesting hearing about their strong bond, even an ocean apart. And getting to see a little side romance in this story.

David Robertson’s sister Ashton is dying of consumption, and he yearns to make her last dreams come true, by finding her a husband and giving her a wedding day. He couldn’t have known what a cruel favor this would be to ask of his friend, Fortune, Texas Marshall Kit Montgomery, who has already experienced what it’s like to watch a beloved woman die. But when Kit gets to know Ashton, he feels compelled to grant her dying wish, even knowing that he risks losing everything once again.

Saying that a Lorraine Heath book is too sentimental feels kind of like complaining that creme brulee is too sweet, but this one does occasionally cross the line from touching to maudlin. One dying angel in a book is more than enough for me and here we have two; I would have liked to see some growth in Kit’s character, some acknowledgment from him that his angels are just mortal women with mortal faults. Also, there’s a lot of plot crowded into a fairly small space in the last half of the book.

I felt glad to have read this mostly because I’ve read all the other books connected to it and it was good to have the holes in the story filled in, . Other than that, it was a decent read but didn’t enthrall me.

This was a sweet and tender romance.

Kit lost his young love to disease, and now he finds himself falling for a woman who may also be knocking on death's door.

She sought no pity for her condition but seemed intent on appreciating each moment that remained. Perhaps through her he could again learn to appreciate what life had given him, instead of longing for what it had denied him.

The evolution of Kit and Ashton's feelings, while fast, was very sweet and endearing. I really loved their bond and the ease with which they shared their thoughts, feelings, and secrets.

However, as seems to be Lorraine Heath's way at times, she's a big fan of chucking unnecessary drama into a story.

The last 1/3 of this book is just one thing after another that kept prolonging the story. Just when I thought that we were nearing the end, a secondary romance is thrown in. Sometimes less is more.

However, I'm happy with the way things ended for all the characters I've gotten to know over the course of this series. This may not go on my list of Lorraine Heath favorites, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

"I love you so much."

"Then grow old with me."

"And if I can't?"

He released a wistful sigh. "Grow a moment older with me. An hour older. A day. A week. Just don't leave me until you absolutely must."

"I've never been more afraid than I am at this moment. I've always faced death. I don't know how to face life."

He entwined his fingers through hers. "'Tis simple, sweetling. Just hold my hand."

Thus far, I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Lorraine Heath, and Never Marry a Cowboy is no exception. It was a wonderful wrap-up to the Rogues in Texas, and my favorite of the series. This final book features, Kit Montgomery, the last of the three English nobleman friends who were sent to Texas to earn their way. Grayson and Harrison each lost their hearts in turn to Texas ladies in the first two books of the series, but Kit has vowed never to love again. The one time he allowed himself to love, it turned out disastrously and broke his heart into a million pieces. But he didn’t count on a frail woman who has been told she’s dying to capture his heart once more. Ashton’s brother, David, caught her trying on her mother’s wedding dress and read in her journals that she had a crush on Kit, who had visited her family only once, but had captured her imagination and her heart during his short time there. Thinking it will provide Ashton with her dying wish, David asks Kit to give his sister a marriage in name only. This leads to a great deal of complications for this tortured hero with a heart of gold. I absolutely loved Never Marry a Cowboy. It’s a sweet, emotional, and sensual read that gave me all kinds of warm fuzzies and left me with a smile on my face.

When I first saw hints in the previous book, Never Love a Cowboy, of just how tortured and vulnerable Kit was, I knew he was going to be a great hero, and he definitely didn’t disappoint. Kit is the second-born of identical twins, who never felt like he could live up to his father’s expectations. He was a weak and sickly child, so he worked twice as hard to earn his father’s respect but never really had it. Then he and his identical twin brother Christopher fell in love with the same woman, but since Christopher was the oldest and the heir, he is the one who ended up marrying her. Then Clarisse became seriously ill. Unable to deal with Clarisse being in unbearable pain during her final hours and knowing that Kit would want to say goodbye, Christopher sent for Kit, who secretly overdosed Clarisse on pain medication and then held her in his arms as she died. What he did has tormented him ever since, yet he knows he would do it all over again. It broke his heart so badly he vowed never to love again. Now he lives in Texas where he was sent by his father, and after trying his hand at picking cotton and driving cattle, he’s finally settled in as the new marshal of the little town of Fortune, where he and his friends live. Kit is more or less walking through life in a blur, unable to get over his lost love, when David comes calling asking Kit to marry his sister. Getting involved, even in a pretend marriage, with a dying woman is the last thing Kit wants to do, but when he sees Ashton again, he’s drawn to her ethereal beauty. After spending a day with her and seeing the childlike joy she takes in such simple things, despite her illness, he knows he can’t deny her this final wish. But the more time he spends with Ashton, the more he wants to give her and make all her wishes come true, yet the guilt over what he did to Clarisse still haunts him, making him hold back a part of himself from her.

I loved Kit to pieces for not only wanting to make Ashton’s wish come true, but for insisting on going above and beyond. He’s a very detail-oriented person who doesn’t forget a single thing and treats her like a princess. Kit is so giving and loving toward Ashton even though he knows that the further he falls in love with her the worse his heart is going to break if she dies in six months as the doctor predicted. This motivates him to do everything he can to help her get better, and I loved how he coaxes her to eat more and encourages her to take long walks with him on the beach where they’re honeymooning. His efforts pay off as she slowly gains weight and becomes stronger. I adore the way he pampers her and wants to give her everything he can to make as many beautiful memories as possible in the time they have left, so they will both have something to sustain them in her final days and beyond. Kit is a wonderful man who wears his heart on his sleeve, but at the same time, he’s incredibly strong and brave in ways it would be easy for others to miss.

Ashton is a sweet, unassuming young woman, who has been sickly all her life. She nearly died the previous winter, which is why the doctor, who diagnosed her with consumption, doesn’t expect her to live more than another six months. Because of her illness, she’s been doted upon and protected by her family, rarely doing much outside the house. When Kit came to visit her brother in the previous book, she was very attracted to him and started daydreaming about a life with him, which she detailed in her journals. When she travels to Fortune with David, she has no idea of his plans to ask Kit to marry her. When she finds out, she doesn’t want his pity, but after spending some time with him, she finds herself falling more in love with him, so that when he proposes, she can’t resist accepting, even though she knows it’s a pretend marriage in name only. But that all changes when Kit insists upon taking her on a proper wedding trip to Galveston, where they spend a month at the beach, thoroughly enjoying each other’s company. Ashton may have been pampered and brought up in privilege, but she’s no spoiled miss. In fact, she craves her independence and wants to experience a few firsts before her time comes. Despite supposedly dying, she has an unquenchable zest for life and wants to seize every moment of the time she has left. Because of Kit’s first love dying, she doesn’t want to cause him any more pain and fully intends to go back to her brother’s in Dallas when their time at the shore is up but finds herself falling more and more in love with him. She basks in Kit’s love until she discovers his darkest secret. Then she isn’t sure how she feels about what he did. The part of the story surrounding her uncertainties and shying away from Kit was hard to read after the beautiful romance they’d shared, but every part of the story was important to them finding peace, redemption, and an HEA.

There are several notable supporting characters in Never Marry a Cowboy. Kit’s brother, Christopher, shows up, unintentionally confusing the townspeople into thinking he is Kit, which was amusing. I really liked that he became a part of the story, because the two brother have such a close connection. They share that twins thing, where they can feel each other’s emotions even with an ocean separating them, and they’ve always been close, never begrudging each other anything, even when they fell in love with the same woman. Christopher suffered, too, when Clarisse died, so it was nice to see him get a new happy ending as well. Gray (A Rogue in Texas) and Harry (Never Love a Cowboy) prove to be Kit’s loyal friends to the end. I love the bond that these men share. We also get to see Gray’s and Harry’s wives, Abby and Jessye, as well as their ever-expanding families. It was also nice to see Kit reconcile with his father. Then there are the villainous outlaws who cause no end of trouble for Kit.

Overall, Never Marry a Cowboy was a splendid read that was full of the sweetness, emotion, and swoon-worthy romance that I crave in my reading. I truly felt Kit and Ashton falling in love from the very beginning and throughout the first two-thirds or so of the book. I just loved all the time they spent together, getting to know one another and coming to realize they couldn’t live without each other. During this part of the story they’re so loving and giving. Even though the distance that develops after Ashton learns the truth of Clarisse’s demise is heartbreaking, it brings each of them to a deeper understanding of each other and their feelings, so it served a valuable purpose. For me, Never Marry a Cowboy was a perfect read and an equally perfect wrap-up to the series. Now I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing the next generation of these men’s families in the Daughters of Fortune, which also includes Kit and Ashton’s son, Devon, as the hero of the second book, To Marry an Heiress.

What a conclusion to a great series. Lorraine Heath has a remarkable gift of writing straight from her heart right into the reader's soul. Ms. Heath can literally bring her readers to tears with her astounding storylines and plots. But not all tears are gut wrenching, some are tears of joy and redemption.
Kit Montgomery left England to come to Texas due to an unfortunate circumstance and his dad's demands, which all still haunt him to this day. A true rogue, unwilling to become a family man, he's now the Marshal of Fortune, Texas, known as the lawman who carries no gun.
Ashton is suffering an incurable disease with only months to a year to live. She's always been smitten with Kit since meeting him the year before, but she knows the prince of her dreams, is just that, wishful dreams.
David, Ashton's brother has a request for his friend Kit, but it's a request that will bring back haunts of England tenfold.
Truly an emotional story that will pull at your heartstrings and bring heartbreak and tears to your soul. A wonderful conclusion to this fabulous trilogy.

Yet another great book by Lorraine Heath. How much pain can one man bare? Kit Montgomery is about to find out. Ashton has one wish before she dies and that is to be married to Kit. A wonderful book that lets you know miracles do really happen and true love really does exist. Highly recommend this book

The first half of this book is great, the second half…not so much. I know with every romance book with the “I’m going to die” trope in it is going to be anticlimactic. Because OBVIOUSLY this character who is going to die can’t die because hello, HEA guarantee. So even though the author is like THE STAKES ARE SO HIGH, I’m like…but are they? There’s a miracle cure lurking.

And then the author threw some kinda dumb things in there and some side plot I wasn’t really interested in…

Bad boy aritocrat Kit Montgomery sent from England by his father turns good guy sheriff with a soft spot for Ashton. Sweet love story with a secondary surprise romance wrapped into the story. This book is pretty emotional, but I can't really go into any of it without ruining the plot. Several things happen in this book that I have not ever heard of in a historical romance.

Lorraine Heath is known for bonkers plot writing so when she writes a quiet book, I sit up and pay attention.

Christian "Kit" Montgomery is the second son of the Earl of Ravenleigh. He was sent to Texas by his father in 1865 because he was in love with his twin brother's wife, Clarisse. She died of cancer shortly before he left but Kit decided to leave England anyway because there was too much grief and shame for him to stay. Now he is the Marshall in Fortune, TX but is living a life devoid of happiness and luxury– his penitence for what happened with Clarisse. Our heroine is Ashton Robertson, a 26-year-old woman who has spent most of her life chronically ill. She has just received a diagnosis of end stage consumption and has less than a year to live. Her brother, David, is a long-time friend of Kit's and David approaches Kit to ask if he'll give Ashton one of her dreams: a wedding day. Kit initially says no, but as he gets to know Ashton he realizes how special she is and he wants to give her some happiness before she passes away so he agrees to the marriage, not realizing just how much he will grow to care for her.

Like I mentioned, this is a quiet Lorraine Heath book. Yes, there are some bonkers moments– Kit is the Marshall of a frontier town– but it is largely two people, trapped in close proximity who are trying not to fall for each other.

We've seen Kit in the last two book of this series and have only had little moments of his backstory. Now that we finally get his whole history in this book, he makes so much more sense as a character. He has to realize in this book that he is not the product of one moment in his life, but rather the sum of all the things he has done. He is a good man and he deserves to actually live his life, not just survive.

Ashton has spent her entire life coddled by first her parents and then her brother because of her chronic illness. Everyone always did for her, no one ever expected anything from her. As Ashton spends time alone with Kit, she realizes both how helpless she is and also how little of life she's actually experienced. She decides that she doesn't want to die without experiencing all life has to offer, but if she asks Kit to give her everything she knows it will devastate him when she is gone. These two have to figure out how to navigate an untenable situation, knowing that Ashton's time is limited even though she looks stronger and stronger every day that she is with Kit.

There is a secondary love story in Never Marry a Cowboy for Kit's brother. This plot line overlaps with a later Lorraine Heath novel (and one of my all-time favorites), Promise Me Forever. That is a second chance romance where we see two people who loved each other as children in Texas come back together as adults in England. There are flashbacks in that book and it turns out, those flashback scenes are in Never Marry a Cowboy, just from a different character's perspective. It was a brilliant choice and I will never get over how talented Lorraine Heath is.

I absolutely loved this book. It got better and better as it went. If you're new to Lorraine Heath, I actually think this series is a great place to start because it is so interconnected with some of her other pre-2008 series. 5 stars.

Ashton and Kit. I found Kit's romance story haunting. Kit considered both Clarisse and Ashton as angels. From the very beginning of the story I grappled with
Death is the main topic in this one from the very beginning to the end. However, there is also regret, love, and forgiveness that seems to hold the story together.

Again, a charming romance with depth and a deep sense of sensibility. However, I was rather caught up on the ethics of euthanasia as depicted in this book - certainly it was a bold action to ascribe to a hero. The inheritance plot was also far-fetched.

However, while I thought the first book in the series was better - the characters were more defined - I still enjoyed this one.

Gosh, I am so not myself right now because I spent a lot of time crying while reading this book!
Everybody should read Never Marry A Cowboy!
I love everything about it!
The hero, Christian 'Kit' Montgomery is divine! He's sinfully seductive, amazingly clever, gentle and caring and incredibly tortured.
How he suffered with his past and then, with Ashton and her situation! Just heartbreaking! :(
And Ashton was also a great heroine! She was really frail and delicate but, yet, strong and spirited. I do not wish her life to anyone!
Their love story was just so special, singular and heart-wrenching! +.+
Seriously, read this book! You won't truly know how amazing it is until you do read it.

None of the books in this series did much for me, to be honest, especially this last one. I thought Kit was a reasonably complex character, but the heroine stood out to me so much that I can't recall her name. She was dying of consumption, apparently, although she never seemed sick, and in the end, I didn't understand either diagnosis or prognosis. She never became anything to me except a dying woman I knew perfectly well wasn't going to die because it's an HEA romance. I don't understand why she became anything to Kit.

I read this book because I read a sequel starring their son, and really enjoyed it. I can't recommend this one, though.

Nice, highly romantic and highly emotional story. Miss Heath's storytelling is really something else. I just really love her voice and I like how she writes her characters, not perfect at all, and that is okay, it makes them more human, more real to me. The H, Kit, was probably one of the most self-sacrificing, honest and hard on the outside but too fluffy on the inside mmc I've read, however he kinda had this savior complex, (I know you mean well but you can't save everyone hun). The h, liked her at first half of the book, but the conflict happened and she acted like a freaking saint and proceeded to do stupid decisions however, she eventually came back to her senses so I guess it's alright.

I must admit, reading this book hit too close to home, I had to pause reading every now and then as I just also lost my grandmother very recently, maybe that's the reason that despite how unfair or horrible the thing the Montgomery brothers have done to the woman they loved, I think I quite understand where they were coming from. The feeling of grief, the pain of watching the one you love slowly succumb to illness, seeing them gasping for breath and just always being fearful of death. I've went through, it was ugly, but yes, Kit was right. Someday, all of us should go but we should start living our lives not just for today, but to live as if there are a thousand tomorrows. I agree with that and I loved that.

I loved how Miss Heath wrote not just the romance, but also the complexity of the characters and the depth of their feelings and I also loved the fact that this book has two romances in it, yes two! One for our hero, Kit and his brother Christopher. Also, I was very surprised with the sudden twists and turns, most especially that one, that one I didn't see coming. However, the conflict was so solid, I was afraid this would not end well or maybe just end with a HFN? Well, I have never been glad to be wrong. I don't know how LH does it, but somehow, she really found a great way to deal with the conflicts and manage to give our characters their well deserved HEA.

Mi opinión…
¡OMG!
Fenomenal. Simplemente perfecto.
