The method may outstay its welcome, but Warsh's inspired framing of flat instructional writing drawn from four enigmatically related technical fields--optometry, genetics, amplification, and birth control--feels Conceptual avant la lettre and commits the attention to the elegant economy and unsuspected emotional depths that language can be made to sound at even its most "uncreative."
