London, 1890:

It's a New Year, but murder never takes a holiday.

The past reaches out to the unlikely investigative team of Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe when a man Mikaela was once engaged to seeks her assistance to find his young runaway son.

What starts out as a seemingly simple case of following the clues becomes far more as the search unravels secrets Mikaela’s former fiancé intended to keep hidden.

Mikaela is determined to find the answers they need, but Brodie can’t keep his mind off of his own set of questions…questions about this woman who is too darn independent; who aggravates him to no end with her lists, theories, and ideas; who puts her life at risk too often; and who may still have feelings for the man she might have once married…questions that complicate this already complicated partnership of theirs.

When the boy's father is found dead, everything they thought they knew about the case is turned on its head and new motives start to take form.

It's a race against time when the boy's school jacket is discovered with a note, and Mikaela and Brodie must work side by side with his mother—a woman who makes no attempt to hide her dislike for Mikaela and is determined to protect her late husband's legacy at all cost—sending them into a place where the hunters become the hunted and they must work together once more in order to survive.

I have read all books in order and have enjoyed and recommended them. This book captured my interest and was a page turner. A missing son of a former flame of Mikela and a bit of jealousy from Brodie, I was loving it. This book focused more on the back story of the central characters and what made them the people they are today. Then, the murder and for me the book just lost its way. Plus, if the phrase "my aunts very fine whiskey" was a drinking game we would all be hungover and the main couple alcoholics. The plot wandered aimlessly for over half the book and Mikaela had a tstl moment. The ending of the book could have been woven into the story in a much more coherent way as it was good. I hate to do it but this book gets a 3.25* But yes I can't wait for the next book as I still enjoy them as a couple.

In this story Mikaela Forsythe is a little bit more annoying than before. While the mystery is still a riveting read Mikaela’s constant internal monologue that ended in the words ‘I digress’. Happened almost as much as the need for her ‘aunt’s very fine whisky’ which I mentioned in my last review is a new drinking game.

A blind man could have seen that the cases that they were working on was one-and-the-same but it took our dynamic duo quite some time to figure it out. Mikaela once again waded into danger to the point that I found my eyes rolling into the back of my head, thinking here we go again. But alas even with all these complaints; like Veronica Speedwell I’m eagerly awaiting the next one.

Series: Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe Murder Mystery #3
Publication Date: 5/23/23
Period: Victorian London - 1890
Number of Pages: 408

I’ve loved every book in this series, and this one is no exception. Lady Mikaela Forsythe’s ex-betrothed has contacted her to look for his missing son. At the same time, Mr. Angus Brodie has been contacted at his inquiry agency to find a missing boy named Kip. Both Mikaela and Brodie know Kip, and they don’t believe he would just run away on his own. However, a bit of the green-eyed monster raises his ugly head when Mikaela tells Brodie of the request to find a missing boy as well. Since the two boys are from entirely different classes, they pursue each case separately. As time passes and neither boy returns – nor are there any clues – everyone begins to fear the very worst for both boys. When evidence of more missing boys turns up, they redouble their efforts. Nothing connects them, so why have they suddenly vanished? Clues are few, but there are some – strange clues, but clues nonetheless. With attempts on Mikaela’s life, a massive fire at Brodie’s office, the death of Mikaela’s ex-betrothed, and a missing boy who turns up beaten nearly to death, none of them may live long enough to solve the case.

I love the growing relationship between Mikaela and Brodie and I can’t wait for them to finally realize they care for each other. I love the step-by-step solving of each mystery with the two of them playing off each other for ideas and respecting the other’s abilities. Mikaela can get a tad TSTL on occasion because she is so very confident of her ability to defend herself, but she does usually try to let Brodie know what she’s doing so she’ll have some backup. The supporting cast is great as well. There is Mikaela’s very eccentric Aunt, the wounded war veteran with no legs, a large ferocious street dog who has taken a liking to Mikaela, and various scientific experts upon whom they call for answers. I’m sure the author is heading toward a romantic relationship between Mikaela and Brodie and I’ll be very interested to see how she manages to make it work in British society. Brodie is a man who grew up on the streets – first in Scotland and then in London – and Mikaela is a Lady. Oh – and did I mention – Brodie is also performing certain services for their Secret Service? Oh! My! Goodness!

I can recommend this book and this series. While you could read this as a standalone without too much head-scratching, I would recommend reading the series in order. The characters and their relationships have changed through the books, with each building on the previous, so you’d want to read each of the books to get a complete picture.

The books are excellently written, well-paced, and include a tad of humor with Brodie’s exasperation with Mikaela’s exploits. You’ll smile, you’ll scratch your head trying to figure out who the villains are, and you’ll laugh at whatever Mikaela’s aunt gets up to. Worth reading!

A dram of my aunt's whiskey

That repeated phrase was like fingernails on a chalkboard for me and nearly incited me to rip out my hair.
This book needs a ton of help: it needs a better editor and the author needs a group of honest and safe Beta readers. I hope you are a real person Carla Simpson and not an AI author.
Something would be written and in the very next paragraph it would be repeated by rearranging the words. Ceaseless repetition throughout the story evoked even more chalkboard nails for me. The book was exhausting to read. There were a couple of pages that were articulate but not enough of them. I do like the characters and the crime ideas. I hope your writing will improve Carla Simpson

So far I’ve seen 17 references to ‘my aunt’s very fine whiskey’ and 9 instances of ‘I digress.’ An author’s signature phrase, such as ‘my aunt’s very fine whiskey’, is like salt. It should be sprinkled about, judiciously, to provide a bit of extra flavour, not dumped all over with a heavy hand.
To my surprise, there have been several misspellings, duplicate words, continuity errors and just plain sloppy editing. There also seem to be several sentences that are awkwardly worded, which could benefit from editing or at the very least, a well placed comma. Several times I’ve read a few paragraphs and have gone back to re-read them, thinking that some pieces of the text should be moved around into a more coherent, logical fashion. Although I like the book a lot, these issues make reading it a struggle. I’m constantly pulled out of the story because it doesn’t flow smoothly.
I’m surprised that an author who has been published for several years is turning out a product like this. She needs more focus on editing before publishing in my opinion. There have been some excellent parts which is why I’m continuing to read. I really like Brodie and Mikaela and the secondary characters. The plot is a bit slow but interesting.

UPDATE - BOOK COMPLETED
A total of 30 whiskey references and 19 for ‘I digress.’ In the space of 11 pages, the whiskey reference occurred 6 times. This seems to have peaked early in the book but the occurrences happen right to the very end of the book. I would reiterate that the author should use these references sparingly so the reader doesn’t become focused on how many times these phrases occur at the cost of enjoying the story.
My concerns as mentioned above, remain. Many times the phrases and paragraphs don’t flow smoothly. It almost seems as if the original draft wasn’t fully edited since there are several instances of duplicate sentences, saying the same thing, on the same page. I can’t understand how this happened.

One other thing that bothered me a bit was that her Aunt, at 85 years old, is wearing a see-through lace bodice on her ball gown, showing a lot of skin. Her Aunt is excited about this and designed the dress this way in purpose. And even more icky is that there is a crowd of obsequious men around her during the ball, apparently due to the attraction of her décolletage. I mean, ewww. I like her aunt’s feisty spirit but that just seems a bit much to me and not relevant to the plot.

Other thoughts….while much of the time Mikaela and Brodie remind me of Miss Scarlett and the Duke, I also see some similarity to Elizabeth Peters heroine, Amelia Peabody. Mikaela is a lot like Amelia….she loves whiskey, she takes risks, she is very confident in her ability, she’s extremely curious and clever and she has an irascible man who loves her (and is exasperated by her).

I was surprised by Mikaela’s action which leads to a resolution in the case. I hadn’t expected that but it was very daring. One might almost call it a TSTL moment. She really does not think before going off on her own sometimes. No wonder Brodie gets frustrated with her.

I enjoy the tender things that Brodie says to Mikaela and I look forward to hearing the outcome of their conversation at the end of the book.

All that aside, I am enjoying the series and am starting book 4.

I am enjoying this series but feel this author would benefit from better editing. There is a plot error that I found quite glaring in this book. Brodie accompanies Mikaela to question both the mother and father of the missing boy. Later on in the book when they return, Brodie is introduced to the mother as if they had never met.

Perhaps the name of the alcohol should be capitalized and changed to “Very Fine Whiskey”. 😂😂

This is a very entertaining series with strong characters and clever plotting with a strong salute to Scotch whiskey. Mikaela is a thoroughly modern independent character who manages to accomplish the impossible. No spoilers.

Lady Mikaela Forsythe and Brodie Angus make quite the pair!
I have unanswered questions about Brodie and some mysterious looking prostitute that appeared at the Strand and Brodie had scratches on his face… hmm!? Well this case was a request from Mikaela one time ex-fiancé Sir Jeffrey Carsten Lord Annandale! His son Andrew is missing! He wants assistance away from the press and strictly confidential!
These two clearly would have never suited Mikaela is built for greater adventures than being a political trophy wife clearly!
This case is not simple or straightforward as it involves several players and missing pieces!
There are young orphan boys turning up dead and blues that with the help of Brodie and Sir Avery and his young protege Andrew the balloonist.
Things and Mikaela and Brodie almost go up in smoke as they get to close to a secret organization with ancient ties to human ritual hunts that would not like to be ever exposed!
These two grow closer to an established dare I saw relationship when the clues take a turn!
Can there be a rescue of Jeffrey’s son and perhaps others who have been taken in time to stop the next hunt!
One of the street urchin that have worked for them in the past is also hurt!
There is a break in the case regarding a clue that can the answer or raise more questions!
Mikaela dives in reckless, daring and fearless except this time there are several more lives on the line! Has she left enough clues to bring help! Will they be rescued in time before the next hunt!??? Hold on this train Aka rollercoaster goes fast!! Bravo

Mikaela has been asked by her ex-fiance to find his son, who has gone missing from his school. It soon becomes apparent that he is not the only child to go missing. Angus and Mikaela investigate - with Angus somewhat annoyed at Mikaela's connection to her former fiance. There is conspiracy, murder, and some romantic jockeying between Mikaela and Angus. There's plenty of suspense and the characters - including the secondary ones - are interesting. The way the relationship between Mikaela and Angus is being portrayed is somewhat too coy for me. What is the nature of their relationship? After several investigations together and obvious sexual tension, a more straightforward situation would be welcome. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the next entry in the series.

Books 2 and 3

The next two books after the first do not lag or disappoint. You stay on the edge of your seat as the mystery continues. The people in the stories have become as familiar to me as old friends and, as usual, I can’t wait for the next book and the audiobook for books 3 and 4. You must read this series. I have to say it’s definitely a personal favorite to reread!

Lately I have been reading quite a few period (mainly 1800's) mystery novels but not always enjoying them. There are only a few authors whose works have captured me enough to continue reading if a series is offered. This author is one of those few. The characters are rather unique and different from other similar genres. Mikaela Forsythe is an unusual woman for the time, 1890, even her name is unusual. She is intelligent, adventurous, opinionated, not at all interested in the "womanly arts", and murder just seems to somehow find her. However, she had met her match in Angus Brodie, a self made Scot who was educated on the streets. They have formed a partnership of sorts, which has the potential to become more. In this third book in the series they are off once again to solve murders, kidnappings, and most interesting the disappearance of the son of Mikaela's ex fiance. Of course, danger abounds for these two as they ferret out the clues and get closer to resolution. I generally do not like books written in the first person like this series, however it is totally necessary in this case. Viewing Mikaela's thoughts gives the reader an inkling into how her mind works. And what a mind it is! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A good yarn, but please, enough with the “aunts very fine whisky”.

33 times that phrase appeared in this story alone. I did a keyword search because it kept showing up. I dunno why she feels the need to refer to it that way over and over and over. We get it. It’s a very fine whisky. I like the characters and premise, even though it’s hardly new; the sleuthing female aristocrat and brusque, totally unsuitable male partner/love interest. It’s good for what it is. A short historical mystery set in Victorian times England.

not a chore to get through

An annoying woman in the lead. Who knows everything, everything in the world she’s experienced, she knows every type of fighting, knows every weapon, and how to use it. She is to be obeyed, not to be questioned, and well she can go off on her dangerous little escapades after being warned multiple times, not to do it, her partner is to obey her and never do anything on his own. Plot inconsistencies, halfway through you will figure out the villain, and unbelievable luck. Whatever she needs will turn out for her. Rambling paragraphs that aren’t necessary. Not an enjoyable read.

This is 3rd in the Angus Brodie/Mikaela Forsythe historical mystery series set in 1880s London.

The former police officer and the unconventional socialite are asked to investigate the disappearance of her former fiancé’s young son and uncovers an evil, sadistic group of aristocrats. There’s also further development in the personal relationship between Brodie and Mikaela.

While I am finding some annoying editing issues (repeated details, repetitions of certain phrases), I’m really enjoying the interesting characters, plots and humor in this series and will happily continue on.

Great story but. . .

So I really like the characters of Mikaela and Brodie and I found the plot of this story quite compelling. However, why does every drink have to be described as ‘my aunt’s very fine whiskey’. I got it the first, the fifth, and even the tenth time. Also, I don’t mind Mikaela’s rambling thoughts but I got tired of the “II digress,” comment. Also , there were some timing issues with the plot. Why had she decided to go to Kew Gardens before learning Sir Joseph was back in town. A lot of these ‘annoyances” could be addressed and corrected during editing.

very fine whiskey

I like this series, I really do. But I REALLY wish the author didn’t feel it necessary to tell us the aunt’s whiskey is very fine Every. Single. Time.

Honestly, the artistic tick went from amusing to irritating very quickly. Now I’m starting to cringe.

Fairly good

The storyline was good. The editing was not. I found so many errors, such as the time Rupert the dog was referred to as Rufus instead. Just a lot of missing words, etc.

London, 1890:
It's a New Year, but murder never takes a holiday.

The past reaches out to the unlikely investigative team of Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe when a man she was once engaged to marry seeks her assistance to find his young runaway son.

However, a simple case of following the clues left behind becomes far more as the search unravels her former fiancé’s secrets.

Mikaela is determined to find the answers, and yet Brodie can't keep his mind off of his own questions about this woman who is too darn independent; aggravates him no end with her lists, theories, and ideas; puts her life at risk; and may still have feelings for the man she might have once married...questions that might complicate this already complicated partnership of theirs.

When the boy's father is found dead, everything they thought they knew about the case is turned on its head and new motives start to take form.

It's a race against time when the boy's school jacket is discovered, along with a note, and Mikaela and Brodie must work side by side with his mother, a woman who makes no attempt to hide her dislike for Mikaela, is determined to protect her husband's legacy at all cost, and who sends them into a place where the hunters become the hunted and they must work together once more in order to survive.

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

This affair is once more a gruesome thing as they sort of investigate two different cases.
Kip, the street urchin has been found badly injured and unconscious. With no clue of his whereabouts from the previous days. Yet he is only one among other children disappearing from the city’s streets.
Then Mikaela has been summoned by her ex fiancé to search for his missing son.
Like the previous books, the investigation takes time and as they put clue over clue, they release it is than a simple child runaway, more lives are at stakes and some of the vilest side of the humankind is conspiring to hide the ugly business behind these disappearances.

It is lovely now to see again the whole crew backing up Mikaela and Brodie during their investigations.

Outside the well crafted mystery, I was much confused about Mikaela and Brodie’s relationship, It was like their relationship has been put on stand off, they are not the lovers I thought I would find as the end of the previous book suggested they had taken the plunge. They appear like in a limbo of a relationship, attracted, with some shared past, from a hazy memory on her side, but nothing else as if the last scene of Deadly Secrets had a different ending than the one I thought.
And this story concludes on the same way, with an opening chapter for the next tale implying they are once more estranged.
Weird.

And what of Kip by the end of the book…

Wow what a read! Each book in this series gets better. It is best to read them in order to fully understand the growing feelings between our main characters, Angus and Mikaela. Mikaela is a very smart, independent woman who was raised by her eccentric great aunt after the death of her father. She doesn’t follow many if any of the rules for women in 1890 England. She has traveled alone to many far-off places and now is an author and also works solving problems with an ex-police officer Angus. Angus is a Big strong Scott who grew up on the streets. Angus has little to no use for anyone of the ton which Mikaela is but they have been drawn together due to events making them work together. They draw of each other strong points. But Angus has much trouble with her always putting herself in harm's way. They have many conversations on the risks and danger she puts herself in. The banter and attraction between them are a Hugh bonus to the stories. This story has it all, talk about fast moving there is the missing of young boys from the east end, and also Mikaela’s ex-fiancé son who went missing from Harrow, a private school for the wealthy. Add in suspicious fires, murder and mystery of who could be behind it all and why. As with all of these books, once you get started you can’t put them down. We get to revisit many of the people from the first two stories, mostly my favorites, Mudger and Rupert the hound plays a Hugh part in this story. Be sure and not miss this series. I can’t wait for the next one. Am hoping both Angus and Mikaela will give into to their feelings. I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it. For those who like to know these are clean stories with some kissing.

Dark secrets and missing boys

A dark tale filled with the dark deeds of men with too much money, time and influence rather than good morals and sense. It all starts with a letter, a man from Miss Mikaela Forsythe’s past contacts her and asks for help. His son has gone missing and she agrees to look for him with help from a certain Scottish man. One missing child, possibly kidnapped turns into another and another and Mikaela and Brodie and stuck with so many questions and so few answers. With their lives now in danger and secrets lurking our unlikely duo must use all the resources they can muster to find the truth and save the young boys.
This isn’t a light mystery but it is a fascinating tale. Secrets of men in high places who’ll do anything to stop them for being found out. And against them Mikaela and Brodie a titled Lady and a former police Inspector. I enjoy the give and take between the two and how they have a most unconventional relationship. Perhaps growing into something more than partners in crime solving? There is a lot of action, but at times the story is a bit slow. If you’re looking for a short read this isn’t it. However I must say I was fascinated but the book and the good outweighs the few issues I disliked. History came alive and was woven well into a complex mystery that I very much enjoyed reading.

A Deadly Mystery to Solve

Adventuress, author and investigator, Miss Mikaela Forsythe lets nothing stand in her way. Not even her often domineering partner Mr. Angus Brodie. Still, between the two of them, many a crime has been solved and the guilty brought to justice.

In the latest of their adventures, A Deadly Game, the stakes have never been higher and it's children who are at risk. Mikaela and Brodie must work together (or try to work together) if there is to be any hope for those who are missing.

Although the pace of Carla Simpson's books are a bit slow, and there really isn't any romance (except for hesitant hints) the characters and the plot make up for it. I really like Mikaela, and I especially like her aunt, the Mudger and Rupert the hound. Brodies okay, he just needs to take a breath and make a move towards the woman he obviously likes, a lot.

All in all, this is an entertaining read that I recommend.

Content 411: This book contains some mild secular and religious swearing.

The characters are very interesting. The mystery and plot has improved with each subsequent novel, but the writing limits this to 3 stars. There are times where the main characters are getting into serious and dark material...and then they have a drink, which can never be referred to as a drink, but always her aunt's "very fine whiskey." It makes a mockery of serious moments and take me completely out of the setting as I roll my eyes.

I really like the characters, but the writing is distracting. I'll continue to read, because the characters are fun and each book has gotten a little bit better than the previous. But for anyone who loves a strong, non-conforming, and sassy Victorian heroine, I recommend the Veronica Speedwell series. That's a master class of funny and serious, perfectly integrating a quippy heroine into serious circumstances. This series and its protagonists have potential, but currently sit very junior varsity to Deanna Raybourn's Veronica and Stoker. I hope they either drink less in the next book or the author just gives the "very fine whiskey" a break.

Like the heroine

This is well done and the hero and heroine are believable. There are a few word/ typo errors, so one might suggest a proof reader. And I like Rupert the hound. But I do have two quibbles. One is the " dram of whiskey ". I realize Winston Churchill managed to practically swim in alcohol and yet function, but one could ask that the drinking of what must be more than a bottle a day be just a little less? The other is a historical issue...in all the various tales of adventure or mystery ( with or without romance) never ever does one have a protagonist speak of or visit a town in Belgium -- Ghent, where in 1899 recognition of the first official police dogs occurred. Rupert is a grand forerunner, but just once I'd like to read of those clever Belgian herding dogs that gave rise to the search and rescue, messenger dogs, military working dogs and police dogs now found the world over.

Outstanding

Long awaited next instalment to Mikaela and Brodie's adventures, and well worth the wait. Dastardly deeds are afoot, engrossing details abound, and our intrepid heroes investigate, edge of the seat situations that they save each other from. A terrific partnership that deserves the time and attention Simpson obviously puts into the writing. Peppered with fascinating insights into the time and place it's set, the tale is involving and confronting at times. Their evolving partnership is a treat to witness. I'm hoping the next instalment (please say there is one!) develops this further! Editing is a bit patchy (spell check alone as an editing tool has a lot to answer for) but inappropriately truncated words and incorrect parts of speech, although annoying, could be disregarded in the long haul. Brava.

I really enjoyed the story but I got so annoyed reading the same lines over and over and over again. If you took just a sip of alcohol every time the phrases “My aunt’s very fine whiskey” “But I digress” “I will have my way in this” or “Damn bloody Scot!” (Or some variation on word order) you would have to be admitted for alcohol poisoning.
I’m usually able to overlook this type of stuff and just enjoy the story. But I’ve never experienced a book using the same phrase so many times. It honestly detracted from the story which is a bummer because I really enjoy pretty much every other aspect.
Tbh I don’t know if I’ll read the next. If I have to hear about her Aunt’s whiskey one more time I might scream.

This could have been a solid 4 stars but this part of the story pissed me off so much I’m tempted to give it 2 stars.

Mikaela is asked by her ex fiance to find his son who has gone missing from a private school. She goes to Brodie and finds out that a child nearby has been found near death. As they start investigating, they begin to wonder if the cases are related and how. Brodie seems to be keeping things from her, which only fuels her determination to solve the case. The mystery and intrigue run throughout the story. The secondary characters of her great-aunt, the Mudger and Rupert the hound, add some levity to the book. The relationship between Mikaela and Brodie seems to be uncertain, which is a bit of a surprise for the series.

Review.

This is the 3rd book in that series. While I find the series interesting, I really want the author to know how disgustingly repetitious she is with the" but I digress" and " my aunt's very fine whiskey." I swear if I keep reading that over and over again I'm going to scream. It isn't amusing And it isn't necessary. I don't know whether the author is trying to just write up words to have so many words added to her stories or not but I find it exceptionally annoying. Here's hoping she reads this and stops it. I will get into the next book, But if I keep reading that I'm going to stop. Like I said before it is not interesting,it is not amusing, and it is not necessary.

This is book #3 in the Forsyth/Brodie saga and it is a great as the others! The author does a great job of twisting and turning the scenarios to the point , I was never really sure where it would end up- a wonderful thing for a mystery!
Mikaela is an unpredictable as always and watching Brodie become more enamored with her is a sight to see. This story is somewhat heart wrenching with the subject matter, but it is well written and not inflammatory to the reader. As always I love the feisty Aunt and Rupert!I loved this book and can not wait for #4!.
