Ellen Davis does a wonderful job balancing solid exegesis with pastoral and spiritual application. The stand-out, for me, was her treatment of the Song of Songs which delicately combines historical and allegorical meanings, which is a quite rare achievement.

The Song of Songs commentary is one of the most fascinating and beautifully written commentaries I’ve ever read.

Ellen Davis is a wonderful interpreter of scripture and has the gentle voice of a preacher. This commentary on the Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs is good, particularly the Ecclesiastes commentary. She has a really interesting perspective on Song of Songs. Proverbs is the least interesting of the three books but much of that goes back to the nature of the book she is commenting on.

Pretty good

This was not my favorite work by Ellen Davis, but it does have some helpful insights and illustrations if you can take the time to mine for them.

Her commentaries opened up a whole new way of understanding Proverbs and Song of Songs, but the game-changer for me was really her elucidation of Ecclesiastes.
