How strange it is that the mundane can trigger the flight of birds of memory. While peeling a potato, Armida’s unruffled, forgotten birds of memory soar to a past of eighteen years: to a time of potential, of unformed political and social identity, along with a daisy chain of unrequited love. Maraini's prose is a lovely combination of insight and emotion.
