World Scripture: A Comparative Anthology of Sacred Texts

Rate this book
World Scripture is an extraordinary journey through the sacred writings of the world's great religions. Organized by subject, the quotations, passages, and excerpts presented here provide readers with easy access to teachings on several hundred subjects, with quotes from different religious traditions.

This unusual anthology provides a new, holistic approach to understanding religion–stressing what unites us rather than what divides us. Among the religious texts represented are Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Jainism, Sikhism, Baha'i, Church of Jesus Christ of the Later Day Saints, and Zoroastrianism. Also featured are the oral traditions of various religions of Africa, Native America, Asia, and Oceania along with their recorded prayers and proverbs.

This is more of a reference book. Not something you would read straight through. It was first published
in the 1980's and for it's time was EXPENSIVE. There are books that compare religious thinkers (Buddha and Jesus or Mohammed and Jesus but it's nice to have the thoughts on a variety of themes from varied
sources in one volume. Find it at a used book shop. It's well worth it. It is especially helpful if you don't have access to a lot of different texts such as all of the Vedas or the writings of Buddhism or
even a decent translation of the Qu'ran.

This is not a book that one would pick up and read from pg. 1 to the end, but it is a wonderful resource for understanding the common threads across religious traditions.

Others see this as mainly a reference book. It is and Ive enjoyed using it when writing sermons of an interfaith nature. Still, this can be read cover to cover. The introductions to each section give me a good sense of context and I enjoy learning how each faith is situated in regards to these primary aspects of religious doctrine. The footnotes give additional info surprises. Yes, its a big challenge and I need many breaks from it. But Im determined to finish.
