The Complete Guide to Petoskey Stones is the authoritative guide for everyone who visits northern Michigan and can't wait to comb the beautiful beaches in search of Michigan's official state stone, the Petoskey. This book dispels myths about the Petoskey and reveals the true facts of this ancient fossilized coral. Instructive pictures and maps keep Petoskey fans on track every step of the way while guiding them to the best places to find the stone, including those favored by local Petoskey stone hunters and collectors. Once you've found a piece of the prized Michigan fossil, The Complete Guide to Petoskey Stones leads you through the many methods of polishing that bring this beautiful stone to life.
Very informative. Has a lot of places to find petoskey stones and the rules about certain places. I especially loved the chapter on How to polish them.
8-14-12 I have had this book on my school shelf for quite a while...but as I have become "re-hooked" on Petoskey stone hunting (thank you, Priscilla), I decided I better learn a little bit more about the stone itself. The book is actually a good guide for finding the elusive stone, as well as some interesting information on how the stones were formed, I think over 350 million years ago!!! And as I tried to tell my brothers and sisters way back when we had 4th of July Petoskey stone hunting contests, those little fossilized coral looking stones WERE really Petoskey stones, too. They just didn't buy it! I hope to read a little more tonight and tomorrow. And I hope to get back up to Leland and find some more stones!!! I am also interested in learning more about the "Leland Blue." PS - would love to have some color pictures in this book!!!
8-15-12 Okay... finished it today. Probably would give it a 3.5. Learned a lot about Petoskey stones and tried to impress my friends tonight with my new knowledge! :<) Looking forward to heading back to Omena this weekend and finding some more great rocks!!!
I'm really glad that I read this book. The bulk of it is taken up in telling the reader good locations to go rock hunting for petoskey stones. I think that next spring after the winter storms will be a good time to go and I know it will make certain members of my family VERY happy!
