I really enjoyed this biography from Walter Sorell. It looks at Herman Hesse scholarly, and personal life. It covers his many personal struggles, which are often were reflected in his many books. It brings in his eastern philosophy approach and his important connections with nature. It also explores the different parts of mankind; from dark to light, including his and others creativity, expressed through poetry and art. There is a heavy influence of Jung’s philosophy in Hesse’s outlook, especially around the human polarities, separating the ego from the deeper self, and the importance of love and spirituality, grounded within our naked drives.
