Charlie's mother is about to be taken as a witch. She'll surely die - and Charlie too. With the aid of Balthazar, his mother's cat, Charlie escapes but now he finds himself in another time - Northumbria four centuries earlier - and a different kind of danger.
The Riddle of the Poisoned Monk by Sarah Matthias turned out to be a gem!
It follows a story of witch's son Charlie who, trying to escape from a vengeful crowd, finds himself in Northumbria in the Middle Ages. With the help of his loyal black cat Balthazar and new-found friend Lady Marian from the Goslar castle, Charlie has to solve the mystery of the murdered novice and discover the abbey's long lost treasure.
I truly enjoyed the medieval adventures and found the characters quite relatable and authentic. There wasn't a dull moment in this book! I highly recommend it to 9-12-year-olds, especially history lovers.
