Before leaving for parts unknown, Clark Kent entrusted Earth’s safety to his son. Now, Jonathan Kent is Superman! Top priority for this new Superman: to protect Metropolis. When a new version of Brainiac attacks, Jon takes drastic measures—which result in the Bottle City of Metropolis! But watch out, Jon, because Supergirl is on her way, and she is not happy with your decision. Meanwhile, in the new bottle city, a new hero has risen. Jake Jordan, the former Manhattan Guardian, came to the City of Tomorrow to start over. But he’s not the only one who wants a new beginning. An anarchist calling herself Honest Mary sees this time of trouble as an opportunity for rebirth—and she’ll tear down the entire city to prove her point. Does Jake have what it takes to save his new home from disasters both inside and out of the bottle? Superman’s former pal Jimmy Olsen is going to make sure he does! Finally, the current Mister Miracle, Shilo Norman, is also in the bottle, and he’s looking for a way out! He’d better be careful, though, or he may end up someplace unexpected. It’s a story that continues in Superman: Worlds of War #1!
Jon as Superman is a super fun idea. The whole idea of him shrinking Metropolis is crazy and new. But the pacing felt like it was a bit dragged out. The second storyline was nothing that interesting with Mister Miracle.
This is a decent start and I'll check out more. A 3 out of 5.
This was better than I expected. The story is set in a possible (not-to-distant) future in which Clark Kent is still around, but his son, Jon, is the main Superman of Metropolis. Brainiac’s A.I. successor (called Brain Cells) is making things so bad in Metropolis, that Jon has to take desparate measures. Supergirl is also part of this story.
Then, there are two back ups.
The first story is set in Metropolis, shortly after the events of the main Superman story. Mister Miracle is the star of this story, but it isn’t Scott Free. It is someone that I’ve never heard of named Shilo Norman.
The final story is about The Guardian, and takes place 6 months after the events of the main Superman story. Things are bad in Metropolis, and Guardian has to work with Jimmy Olsen to stop a new threat rising up among civilians – a scheming young adult named Honest Mary.
I enjoyed all three stories, with the Superman story being the best, and the Mister Miracle story being second best.
SPOILERS FOR "DARK NIGHTS: DEATH METAL":
Right at the beginning of this issue, there is a reference to what happened at the end of "Dark Nights: Death Metal" Issue #7, and it is made clear that this is just one future that could happen in the new Multiverse.
Enjoyable start! Jon as Superman is interesting to see. I like that this seems to touch on his half human biology making him differ from Clark and Kara. I'm interested to see where this goes.
All 3 stories get a 1⭐ from me. Jon's a really unlikeable character in all these Future State books. The Miracle story was fodder, and the Guardian had potential but fell flat. Ehh. Pretty terrible all round here.
Superb title in DC Comics Future State line of books! Jon makes a crazy rash decision that admittedly, even his father wouldn't pull off. I feel his character is portrayed spot on here. Supergirl is a very good voice of reason. Wish I could read the next. I even liked the new Guardian
Well it's better than Bendis's Superman but that's not saying much.
One word comes to mind when reading this, Irresponsible. That's how I'd describe Superman in this, now I know he's not the seasoned boy blue that we love, it's his son but so many things in this could have been avoided.
Like most of this is him talking to the villain, doing villainous deeds and fighting an ally. It's kind of baffling how he think he's doing the right thing, I mean it's fault to begin with that the villain has so much leverage.
Then we have the Mister Miracle story, which takes place after the first story. It was a waste of pages, he pops up fights robots, tell people to get lost as he wants to fight where they are. Instead of finding a safe place away from people, to top it off, it's not Scott Free. It's just some random dude in his costume with his power, with no explanation, at least Superman's made sense as it was his son, this is just some random bloke.
After that we have a Guardian story, to be honest I didn't expect to like this much. Low and behold it was the best of the bunch, much like the second story this takes place after the first. It's about an average joe trying to do the right thing, whilst mobs are forming and whispers are a foot. Kind of a shame this was a back up story instead of it's own, I would a dug a full fledged story on this.
Overall I'm glad I picked this one up, whilst only one story was good I'm kind of interesting to see what happens in the Superman story, hopefully it picks up. Superman 2/5 Mister Miracle 1/5 Guardian 3/5
The publishing history (5G, ahem) that brought to life the Future State storylines aside, just the thought of having a full-fledged Superman as the protector of (well, at least) Metropolis, but cast as a more inexperienced hero and part Earth human/Kryptonian person really makes for an interesting set new circumstances to explore. Jon tries to use his limited experience and knowledge of his father's work to make good, decisions--only to prove how problematic even that can be when you underestimate your rival. Maybe I missed something along the way since I completely skipped the Bendis run of Superman/Action Comics, but for the main story, I'm anxious to read the next issue and see what Jon does.
But that's not all... There are 2 backup stories, one for Guardian and the other, Mister Miracle. Both build off the new DC reality coming out of the Superman story, so there are more than a couple of twists in those stories. What I will say about it is that it is clear that DC is ready to really shake up their entire line and cast of characters and both do as good a job as any story of that length to introduce the character and give me a reason to come back.
This is my first time reading an in continuity Superman comic since 2018. I have a strong distaste for Brian Michael Bendis run so dropped it two issues in. For my first time reading adult Jon I really enjoyed this. It was well written and I want to come back for more. The Mr Miracle story is outstanding and I loved this version of the character way back in 7 Soldiers of Victory. The Guardian is also the Grant Morrison version featured in that series. It was a great story of a beaten down hero trying to survive in a world without Kal El Superman to keep Metropolis safe. This is the best of the three Future State series I read this week. I highly recommend it.
My favorite part of this issue is how connected all the stories were. Even though Mister Miracle had the weakest one in my opinion it was a good look of how the media would react. People watching it on tv and trying to soak in the situation. Which leads to Guardians story of the radical reactions of some of Metropolis’s residents.
Didn't like this at all. Didn't care for the action, plot, or characters in all honesty. I have a love hate relationship with superman and I don't think Jon is bringing me into the love category. Honestly don't think I'll pick up issue 2 for 6 bucks.
Love the take on this version of Jon Kent. It fits so well, this young, good-hearted kid superhero not fully understanding the implications of his actions, is perfect. I enjoyed the Mister Miracle story, but it didn't quite have the oomph as the main story.
I really like idea of Jon as Superman, but all I could think about is that “I can’t believe you’ve done this” meme. Coming off of Bendis’ run though, still a much better story! I’m interested to see how Jon gets out of this one!
I liked the Superman part a lot. The other two sections were okay. Art is good throughout. The Guardian is a pretty cool character though, so I'd read more about him.
Ok book, great artwork. Being a big Superman fan, expect the book to be of Superman. Not short stories about Metropolis but took a minute to think and realize Jon shrank the city. But still an ok book.
Jon Kent is struggling to take over for his Dad. Things get a bit more complicated when Metropolis is enclosed in a force bubble by a computer run amok.
Now, he and couple of Metropolis' street level heroes are trying to hold things together.
Fun seeing the various heroes trying to deal with the threat to the city in their own ways. Liked the loose knit, not quite a team feel of the comic and John's eventual decision on what kind of hero he wants to be.
