Can i fix the publication information on this? The title is Starstruck : Celebrity performers and the American public, and the author is Jib Fowles

Interesting theory—stars are like a virtual village, each with a role to play and only a limited number are stars at a time (about 100), they take the place of the village in the psyche of Americans as they shifted to a more rootless and lonely urban lifestyle. (makes sense—Clara Kimball Young was the first in the film drama queen slot, overtaken by Norma Talmadge while Gish and Frederick never made it to that rank. After talkies the slot was contested for a while before Bette Davis emerged on top)
