Second Chance Garden was quick and easy and low angst. It's a small town romance with heart and community and even a little steam! When a tornado hits her home town, Emma goes home to help her family at their Inn. While total chaos ensues, her childhood love is unexpectedly the one who helps make sure things get put back together. She didn't know he was home after years away. She didn't expect to be confronted with feelings and conflict and a smidge of love.

This was the perfect book to cruise through on audio while I worked and cleaned and went about my day.

I enjoyed A.J. Pine's The Second Chance Garden. There were some marvelous descriptions of this small Illinois town, and the quirky folks who live there.

Emma was an enjoyable character to get to know, though as a lifelong asthma sufferer myself, I was pulling my hair out over her mismanagement of her condition.

Three stars for the audio version. I thought the voices for the younger female cast were well done, but I'd like to see this narrator do a bit of work on the older folks' voices.

Emma Woods heads to her hometown after a tornado hits the town. She only plans to stay long enough to check on her parents and help with the B&B. Matteo Rouke has been back in town for a year now since his father hurt his back. He's running his father's business.
Emma runs into Matteo the first day; they were in love in high school but broke up when he went to prison.
Matteo knows he messed up 10 years ago; but he was not a drug dealer only a user. He told Emma to forget about him and leave when she visited him in prison.
Emma is trying to help the town get back on track since the tornado. They town is known for its gardens they took a hit. Someone in town starts putting out decorated hub cabs as decorations and the mayor wants them arrested for vandalism. Emma and her friend see them as art.
Wonderful story of finding each other again and forgiveness and moving forward.

Second Chance Garden is the first book in A. J. Pine’s Summertown series. Emma Woods has quickly packed up for an impromptu visit to her family home in Summertown, Illinois, after a tornado devastates the area. As Emma works from her home in Chicago in the online industry anyway, going to help out is a priority without being a problem.

As Emma nears her hometown and sees the damage she is fearful. When she arrives in Summertown, Emma is relieved to see minimal damage at the Woods Family Inn even though there is great destruction in the town. What Emma finds inside is much of the town and their menageries taking shelter at the inn. What Emma never expected to find is her former boyfriend Matteo Rourke doing wildlife control at the inn.

Some years ago, when Matteo broke things off with Emma both were just kids, although it could be argued that life’s battering had taken a larger toll on Matteo. While in college his mother was diagnosed with cancer and embarked on a battle, however it was a battle she lost. This devastated Matteo’s dad Dennis and older brother Levi. Trying to keep it all together for the family, Matteo became lost, especially when a DUI led to jail time. When Emma visited him in jail he cut her loose and as devastated as she was, she never pushed back. Now that they have come together face to face mysteries will be unraveled.

Now that their beloved hometown of Summertown has been flattened just weeks before the big garden competition between them and neighboring Middlebrook, which just so happens to have pilfered Summertown‘s garden designer, the mayor’s ex-wife, the town is even more devastated. This is very bad timing! Never would the prize money have been more important for the town than now.

Just when it seems all is lost, beautifully designed, painted, and perfectly placed “flowers” made of scrap metal and old hubcaps begin popping Up. Is this what will give the town a new competitive edge and will the mayor really prosecute the artist for vandalism?

This is a fun story that will make the reader smile and wonder as the mystery comes full term to a lovely conclusion. I really like this new series by A.J. Pine, and look forward to the next book in the series. I definitely do recommend it!

The Second Chance Garden is a lovely story of second-chance romance and a woman who wants to help her town rebuild following a tornado.

Emma has returned to her hometown of Summertown to help her parents run their Inn following the tornado that blew through damaging many things, including the gardens that need to be refurbished prior to Garden Fest. The one person she is not expecting to encounter is her ex, Matteo, who broke her heart eight years prior.

Matteo has been back home for over a year and he's helping his father to run his business and when he gets called to the Inn in a professional capacity, he and Emma begin to tentatively form a friendship again. The two work together to help get the town back in shape for the Garden Fest and they also try to solve the mystery of who the mysterious artist is that is installing the amazing art installations around town. Will they be able to figure it out in time?

This was an enjoyable second-chance story for Emma and Matteo with the side story mystery thrown in. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to more from this small town.

Sweet, but very touching, and sometimes heartbreaking, story.
Feels to me more like a young adult/teen kind of book...
Emma Woods is a Social Media guru who moved away from her smalltown of Summertown, Illinois almost a decade ago... after losing her love...to jail...
BUT, a tornado has come through the town causing damage and havoc...especially since the big gardening contest is coming up...and Summertown could REALLY use the winnings from the contest to help the town!
So, Emma moves back home temporarily, to help out her parents (who own the town's Inn, that most of the townies are staying at while their places are fixed up)...and to hopefully come up with a plan to help the town win the contest.
Of course, while she is there, she runs into Matteo, her former love/heartthrob, but she is determined to keep her cool and move on with her life.
The ensuing book is filled with laughs, and tears, and friends, and family, and love!
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!
Thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscapes Media for the ARC of this audiobook which was released on September 5th, and I was lucky enough to receive yesterday!

Emma Woods town left 8 years ago when her heart was broken. Nowadays a social media manager in Chicago, Emma is back in town to help her hometown after a tornado destroyed .
Whom she hoped not to come across was Matteo Route, the boy, now man, who broke up with her when he went jail.
Matteo is still in love with her, but believes she deserves better.
Getting the town to be part of the Garden festival using the anonymous sculptures around town might just be what they need to bring the town back. But obstacles and constantly being raised by the major. Still, Matteo and Emma begin to trust each other as they work together.
Will the artist reveal themselves? Will the town win the garden festival? Will Matteo and Emma finally get their HEA or will they go their separate ways?
This was a sweet romance of a couple in their late twenties getting a second chance in love and life.
I was entrusted a copy of this audiobook by Netgalley and Dreamscape. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

First in a new series

I believe Summertown is supposed to be a Stars Hallow (Gilmore Girls) like town, but it kind of misses the mark. The townsfolk feel underdeveloped. The quirky/eccentric type are lacking in quantity, while the grumpy type are strongly present.

Emma and Matteo are ok. The various nicknames in the book are super annoying (especially Ems and Hals- puke). They also all have multiple nicknames. Their history is made to be way more dramatic than it actually was. I don't quite by the chemistry, either.

This sounds very negative- and I don't mean for it to be. It was an OK book and I feel there is promise with the series. But on its own, the book is just ok. It was also predictable. If you didn't immediately figure out who the artist was....

Stephanie Rose narrates the audiobook. While her performance was good, I feel like it would have been enhanced with dual narrators for each POV.

I received an audio copy in exchange for an honest review.

Emmie came back to her hometown to try and help rebuild after a devastating hurricane ravaged the landscape. With the upcoming garden festival it's all hands on deck to replant flowers and prune shrubs for the contest. But townsfolk are busy rebuilding and repairing their homes and businesses until an unknown artist pops up with unique sculptures around town.

Matteo has been working with his dad in wildlife rescue and removal, but is surprised when his ex is at her family's Inn. Their breakup was devastating for both and his incarceration was for the wrong reasons. He was set up and he works hard to find out the how and why all while working on a surprise .

This is a delightful and charming story about small town life, righting a wrong, and second chances .

Although I received a free ARC eBook from Net Galley and the publisher, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

SECOND CHANCE GARDEN by A.J. Pine, book 1 of the Heart of Summertown

A small town is the perfect place to find love―but first there's work to do… social media manager Emma Woods has no choice but to head back home from her life in the big city to help rebuild after a tornado ripped through Summertown except avoiding Matteo Rourke, the reason she left Summertown in the first place is not as easy as she thought. Matteo can't help what happened that broke up his and Emma's relationship years ago, but all he can do now is avoid her, but of course everywhere he goes, Emma is there…

SECOND CHANCE GARDEN is a delightful, small-town romance about a second chance at love for Matteo and Emma. Pine's superb writing of character development, strong family building and interesting secondary characters.

Emma left town years ago with a broken heart and hasn’t been home for quite some time. When a tornado wreaks havoc she returns to help out her parents and their business. What she isn’t expecting is to literally bump into the very man who broke her heart. Avoidance isn’t possible in their small town. Clearly they both have feelings, but are both fighting them. It’s a sweet, funny, sometimes rocky road back to them letting go of the past, learning to trust each other again, helping their town and their ultimate happily ever after while helping their town recover. Easy nice listen. Upgraded to 4 stars from 3.5 as no half stars available.

This second chance, small town romance had great summer, beach read vibes with the emotional depth of CoHo's best gut-wrenchers. I really enjoyed the disability rep (asthma her and muscular dystrophy in a parent) and the redemption story angle (he's a recently released convict looking to redeem his reputation and help her save the town after a natural disaster destroys their chances to win the local Garden Fest competition). Good on audio narrated by Stephanie Rose and a great start to what looks to be a new small town series perfect for fans of authors like Laura Pavlov. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital and audio copy in exchange for my honest review.

A small town second chance romance- for both Emma and Matteo and the town of Summertown. A tornado tore through the small town, wrecking havoc, but there's a plan to enter it in a Garden Festival that's got a big prize. Emma's come home to check on her parents and their B&B. She didn't expect to run in Matteo, her long lost love who is newly released from prison. These two split after he was convicted but the time apart, well, it only strengthened their feelings. This love story is enhanced by the hunt for the anonymous local artist who is placing painted hub caps around the town. There aren't any real surprises but the circumstances of Matteo and Emma's lives adds a bit of grit. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read.

This was a cute cheesy read. I did enjoy it, but I felt we were thrown straight into the story without any context in the beginning. We met Emma and learned she was a social media influencer going home because of a tornado. A contest with prize money was mentioned, so you know that the town is entering, but it wasn't really detailed until towards the end, so it left me feeling a little confused. I did think the characters were a little immature, but since this isn't a serious book, it wasn't too hard to overlook. I liked the writing style and the plot of the story, but there were parts that I felt could have been more elaborated on.
Thank you, NetGalley and publisher, for the opportunity to read a new to me author.

This book was a quick romance read. I enjoyed light reading. It didn’t require too much thought and is meant to be read in a field of wildflowers. The ending was fairly guessable, but aren’t most hallmarks?! I would’ve enjoyed to see this one on tv. It reminded me of the marriage between hallmark and Disney, but not in a bad way. You’ll fall in love with Emma, even more so with Haddie, and the most with Matteo. He represents so much growth; personally, professionally, familial-ly, romantically. He represents an exact flower. Grown from all that he has been through. I felt like it wrapped up well without too much left unspoken. Open ended enough to wonder but not to question, if you know what I mean. Anyways, I recommend for anyone young adult and up.

Wow! Do you ever read a book and shortly in think of how you and the author could absolutely be best friends?? From the very beginning of the book this was my thought process. Her cat, me, I have 4. 80's playlist, yep! Friends and Ross references. Are. You. Kidding?? I frequently pull out PIVOTTTT! And the Paramore T Shirts. Ha. I just seen them live last month. I have my very own Paramore T Shirt I should have kept on throughout the whole book! I have been in a romance mood lately and this book checked ALL the boxes for me without being cheesy or overdone. I loved the art undertone and the ending. 5/5 stars from me. I have a feeling this will make my top 10 of 2023!!

Definitely was a weird read in terms of figuring out the intended audience. On one hand, it read like an excitedly written novel for teenagers, but it had overwhelmingly adult themes. The dialogue felt forced for the first few chapters, but took stride somewhere around chapter seven. Overall, it was a cute romance novel with a largely original plot. Felt like a plant themed version of Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover.

The cover of this book is what drew me in initially, it's so pretty and eye-catching!

I think fans of the New Adult genre would enjoy this book, the writing felt like it was very young and modern but it does contain adult themes. Overall it was a pretty fast-paced read with an interesting plotline.

Thank you to A.J. Pine, Net Galley and SourceBooks Casablanca for allowing me to read ab ARC of this book.

A charming second-chance romance. Small town issues. Family, friends, and a cat all add to the fun. I would have rather there not be swear words or intimate scenes, but neither kept me from enjoying the book. Also rather predictable, but don't we all want that in a happily ever after story. I look forward to visiting Summertown again. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.

A decent little romance with a good small town setting. A bit obvious and simplistic, and more of a 2.5 read for me personally because I’m not big on romance, but I think a lot of readers will enjoy this uplifting story of second chances in life and love. The town and characters were cute, so this might catch on as a series.

Received an advanced reader copy (arc).
Story was cute.
Didn’t feel like the pace was quite right. Lots of italics in weird places, not sure if that was an editing issue since this was an arc. Got a little repetitive but if you’re just picking up some light reading, it was easy to skim over.
Cute if you like fluffy romance with little to no tension but it just wasn’t for me.
