Crickley Creek #1

The Firefly Jar: A Novel

Rate this book
Welcome to Crickley Creek, where dreams are encouraged—as long as they fit within the proper rules of etiquette.

Sweet Charlotte Sinclair has no idea that "bless your heart" is the same as "screw you"—and she’s about to find out the hard way. After her mother’s death, Charlotte moved from free-wheeling California to her mother’s tiny hometown in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, longing to feel closer to her and searching for closure.

Charlotte loves her status as a popular coffee shop owner and is enjoying her budding romance with local hero Will Rushton more than she’d like to admit. So why is she still struggling to find acceptance within the Crickley Creek community? There’s a secret nestled among the plantation homes and Spanish moss-covered oaks—a truth her mother’s arch rival will do anything to hide.

And if Charlotte doesn’t learn how to overcome the damage some well-placed gossip can do to her reputation, she might lose everything, including her rose-colored memories of her mother. But is it possible for an outsider to belong in the deep South and still remain true to her own roots?

The Firefly Jar, the first in the Crickley Creek series by Laurie Beach, will take your breath away with its beauty and simplicity. With the gorgeous backdrop of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, you are immersed in generations of tradition, families new and new, old love lost, and a slow-brewing new love that is tender and heartwarming.

Ms. Beach has crafted characters with heart who reach into your imagination and leave you with a piece of their souls. The story is emotionally moving and whets your appetite for more from the slow-paced Southern country life of Crickley Creek.

4 1/2 stars!!!! This sweet book captured my interest immediately with the setting in the South. As a reader I immediately jumped in to the town of Crickley and felt I got to know the characters. Watching Charlotte get established as a new member in the community allowed me to see how relatable she was to any person taking a new location, a new job, a new friend group. She is a strong young lady. I like the way Laurie Beach introduced the characters quickly with a bit of a back story. It was just enough to allow me to form my own images and assumptions until their profiles became more apparent. I really like the way Laurie describes the details of the town and townspeople, the coffee shop, the wildlife and the art. I want to visit Katu Island myself. I found myself thinking of Charlotte's firefly jar, taking the lid off while she did, smelling the inside like she did and envisioning the wisp of fragrant honeysuckle. I think we all have a Firefly Jar. This book may be more than a cute love story, it was a reminder of what love and loss can be and how we can keep that love in our heart. Im looking forward to the next book in the series.

The residents of Crickley Creek are a diverse group. Thanks to all the dialogue in this book (and Southerners do love to talk!) you really get to know the characters and I'm sure will be able to associate each unique personality to someone you know. The author's succinct descriptions not only enable you to picture the settings, but transport you there...experiencing the embarrassments, smelling the aromas, watching the sunsets, and burying your toes in the sand. This book takes you through a range of emotions from laughter (those bizarre Southern expressions) to tears (touching family experiences we all have). The many twists and turns in this novel (some predictable, most not) make it hard to put down. I am looking forward to my return visit to Crickley Creek this summer when the next book in the series is released.

This charming book is about a young woman who moves to her mother's hometown, a town she had never been to, in an effort to feel closer to her recently deceased mother. As she learns about her mother's past, she learns about herself as well. The journey is delightful. Unfortunately, I chose laundry day to start reading this book and I didn't want to put it down to change loads. I literally read it from start to finish in a day. The writing style matches the content, light, airy, and comfortable. Although there are a few unforeseen twists, they are not jarring or offputting. Ideal beach read. I voluntarily read this book and I have written my own opinion.

Southern "low country" womens fiction that is first in a series and a debut novel. No book report or spoilers from me! The characters are realistic & interesting. If you're from the south you probably have met them in some form in real life with different names. Descriptive scenes & conversations are such that you'll feel like you're in the room. You'll want to talk back to the snarky & hug a few people too. It will hold you attention & keep you reading. Good rainy day, beach, or poolside read. I was provided an Advanced Reader Copy but was under no obligation to provide a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
Read & enjoy!

What a delightful story with a few twists and turns that keep you guessing and turning the page! The story transports the reader to the south in a charming community. It entangles you in the lives of several people with various personalities that spice up the atmosphere and relationships! The development of the characters is just enough in this quick moving story that draws the reader in. Whenever I complete a fictional book, I ponder whether or not I will miss the characters in my everyday life. If the sentiment is yes, it was a good read! The Firefly Jar was a good read! Bravo!

Thank you, Laurie Beach, for allowing me to jump into the life of Charlotte, your leading character in the town of Crickley Creek in the low country of South Carolina. I could identify with her life in California, and and I now desperately want to visit the south, and learn more about the cultures that you uncover for the reader. This book had everything for me. I am a sucker for a book shop, beaches and interesting characters. I felt I was part of that community while I read it. It has everything from a love story, family tensions, good friends, and difficult neighbors. I look forward to the next in the series.

Laurie’s debut book has left me wanting more to read from this Crickley Creek series. The relatable characters and complex southern culture kept me engaged throughout the whole story. The author’s ability to set the scenes of this small town filled with a mix of colorful personalities in the low country of South Carolina helped me visualize what it would be like to be an “outsider” in a place you so desperately want to call home. With its romantic back drop, twist & turns and unexpected revelations, “The Firefly Jar” is a book you won’t want to put down.

It amazes me that I was so easily enraptured into the world Laurie Beach elegantly described and characters living therein. It was a much needed distraction from my daily grind. It brought the helpless romantic out of me - something I had forgotten existed. I had to force myself to put it down so I could savor it longer.

I am looking forward to the continued tales of Crickley Creek.

A fun read! As a person from California, this certainly betrays how challenging moving to Crickley Creek, South Carolina could be! “Bless your heart” is not delivered in kindness. This tiny town has lots of secrets & history, with unsuspected twists, challenging relationships, and lots of interesting developments along the way. This is a fun and easy read that will keep you captivated!

You’ll enjoy this story that pulls you into the characters and twists you won’t expect. As a girl raised in the south but not born there, I can appreciate Charlotte’s challenge to find her place. I was also lucky to find community, including Laurie. We were childhood friends and I am honored to have the opportunity to read an ARC. I am so glad I did. It’s the first of 3 in the Crickley Creek series and I can’t wait to start the next one.

If this novel was a Netflix series, I would binge-watch the next episode! Laurie Beach creates such a saucy set of southern characters that I want to visit the town of Crickley Creek and join the fun! The romance in the air and the unexpected, even shocking, twists and turns prove that southern hospitality is not always as it seems. Ultimately, The Firefly Jar proves that love finds a way, truth is stranger than fiction, and family remains the tie that binds. This romantic novel is full of southern snafus and takes the reader on a wild ride from start to finish. I can’t wait to learn what comes next!

I have a friend who grew up in the South, and I know whenever I hear “Well, bless your heart!” come out of her mouth… something or someone is in a heap of trouble. So, I immensely enjoyed the colorful, often hidden Southern meaning, of the phrases used in The Firefly Jar. Really, what a great way to cuss someone out by blessing their little ole heart.

I absolutely fell in love with the community of Crickley Creek. Whether kind souls or those with a darker agenda, each and every character fit into the puzzle that makes up this small town. It’s not easy for an outsider, California loving Charlotte to stand up to the gossip and tightly bound relationships here, but she’s not only relocating forever, building her business, but needs to feel closer to her deceased mother, to understand her better. But there is someone here who would just as quickly ruin her reputation but make sure that she leaves this town with its secrets intact. Not going to happen, for Charlotte is made of stronger stuff than someone thinks.

The Firefly Jar transports the reader to a small town with secrets and hidden meanings behind so much. This story captured my imagination, my curiosity, and keep me involved in it until the final page. There are a few twists along the way, a romance to get off the ground, and understanding the past before Charlotte will have a stronger sense of belonging in Crickley Creek… but what an adventure it was. The dialogue brought this one to life for me as Charlotte learns how to cope with some residents, win over others, and deal with the gossip that has set out to ruin her on purpose. There is so much that each reader should encounter for themselves, but I loved this one and definitely will be watching for the next release in this series.

A must-read for anyone who loves southern fiction. Laurie Beach's voice is rich and, her characterization right on--you'll love Birdie and Scruggs, unless there's something deeply wrong with you!--and her storyline always interesting. I'm so happy this is the beginning of a series.

The Firefly Jar is the first book I have read by Laurie Beach as well as the first book in the Crickley Creek series. The title did not seem at first to fit a romance novel but its significance is huge in the story, so the tittle is perfect for this women’s fiction/romance story.

Charlotte Sinclair moves to the childhood town of her late mother. It takes no time for her to realize that South Carolina is not anything like her home state of California. There are parts that are over the top, but much could really happen here in the South. I kept thinking this would be a great movie. Lots of wildlife, delicious food, drama, secrets revealed, weddings, handsome men and a villain to hate. All written in vivid color. A great start to the series.

Crickley Creek-Perfect Mental Vacation Destination

Ironically, Crickley Creek reminds me of the Hotel California – the state our beloved protagonist Charlotte Sinclair is from. You can check out, but you can never leave. This fictional novel sounds a lot like reality with Charlotte having the kind of luck we all dread and love as life continues to throw its curveballs with moments of reprieve. Add a culture shock to the mix with a mean-girls psychology dipped in a syrupy-sweet-tea-laced-with-cyanide southern drawl and you got yourself the recipe for the perfect emotional storm but with a perfect ending.

Fiction is often inspired by truth and my guess is with the precision the author describes the scenes, the characters and the dynamism of human psychology, this fiction sounds like it’s no exception. Anyone from the South will likely recognize the content of the South Carolina characters and anyone from Cali can appreciate the vibe Charlotte brings growing up as a California girl. If you can imagine a Katy Perry meets Kathy Bates kind of tale, you just might have a sense of the mischief that’s about to unfold in Crickley Creek.

Laurie Beach is true to her word about leaving you with a happy ending. If you don't find a tear of joy slipping down your face, you may want to check your pulse. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with your visit to Crickley Creek and the ending may just leave you wanting to hear more about how our humble heroine Charlotte is doing in her new old life that actually started before she was born.

So, if you're in the mood to vicariously face and conquer generational trauma, find your true identity after tragedy and come out literally sitting pretty on the other side with an ocean view, The Firefly Jar is for you.
