Viking's Captive was a steamy time travel romance set in the 8th century in Norway. Donna is an attorney who works to secure women's rights in present day New York City. At a trial she sees an ex who burned her in the past and caused her to swear off any man that might take advantage of women. Before the trial begins a woman gives her a spindle and she finds herself transported to the time of Vikings. There she meets Sigurd the jarl of his community and he also dismisses women as being weak and distrustful. These two are an unlikely pair but we end up with an action packed novel with lots of romance.
This novel is part of a series and I had not read the other books. It did not diminish my enjoyment of the novel. The novel was also a very quick read. There were times when I did find Sigurd an overbearing male and I wanted Donna to smack him over the head. I read a lot of historical fiction and I think the author did a great job with the time period. It was easy to visualize. Overall, I think this is a great addition to the historical time travel romance genre.

Viking's Love. Book 5 of Mariah Stone's Called by A Viking time travel romance series. At this point I've binged the books, reading one per day for 5 days. I am obsessed, to say the least. Now here I am writing the last 3 reviews at once, so excuse me while I just copy and paste why I think the series has just clicked for me:
The writing is easy to read, the characters are always complex and wonderful, and I love the development of both characters and plots. The ways in which time travel and the female characters from the future are handled is what keeps bringing me back, there is a satisfying logic to what happens, an attention to detail from the author that I appreciate and love.
I believe I said it in the reviews I wrote for the first 2 books, I've been burned by time travel books before, with leaps in logics and talents possessed by the modern day hero/heroines where I just can't suspend my disbelief any further. I feel that this series has healed me of that.
Donna is a no-nonsense lawyer from New York (she is everything that this Australian would expect such a character to come across as). After being given the golden spindle by the Norns, Donna is thrown back across. She appears out of thin air and Viking jarl and warrior Sigurd was witness to the miraculous. At first thinking she is a goddess, Sigurd is almost immediately ready to give into the sexual attraction between him and Donna. But this is not a simple love story of a woman displaced in time, like all the other books in the series, Donna has her own issues and flaws. Likewise, Sigurd has some major troubles of his own, and a mistrust for women, come by honestly, is the tip of the iceberg. I've said it in every review for this series, but I absolutely have enjoyed the characters and their development. They are not just black and white, there are shades of grey in their personalities, but as we get to know them and see love form and strengthen, the reader can be left in no doubt that love really does save the day. Or the century. Whatever.
This was a great end to a great series. Most excellent. I've got nothing else I can say without giving away spoilers.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
We start off in Norway, 870 AD. Sigurd, acting as his father’s second sent his sister, Vigdis to their enemy Jarl Fuldarr in the hopes of not fighting. Vigdis failed them and sided with the enemy and Sigurd’s father Jarl Randver as well as many of the men of the settlement die in the fight. He just couldn’t believe his sister betrayed them. Their father firmly believed that women couldn’t be trusted with important things. Which is just sad. As his father was ill, it was a great honor to die in battle and be taken by the Valkyries to Valhalla. It still made me cry, drat it all.
Donna Cox, with her mother, both attorneys ‘battle’ to protect women, from their bosses and from discrimination lawsuits. The four women who were her clients, were women who got pregnant and were fired because of it- because they weren’t as fast as they had been before they had gotten pregnant, etc. It is 2018 when it takes place and in NY.
Sigurd was building a fortress around their land in the year it had been since he lost his father and became Jarl. There are too few men working on it because of those who had died and he isn’t using the women because he doesn’t trust them with ‘important’ tasks.
The norn, Verdandi, sends Donna back to Sigurd. His outlook causes major misunderstandings between them. At first, everyone believes she is a Goddess because of her beauty and he believes she was sent there to help with the building of the fortress and it is true. OMG it is so funny but it upsets him when she starts working with the women to help. I love how he changes because of Donna. It gets bad when his sister and Fuldarr return. I’m sorry but to me high heels are a weapon hence the name stillettos! I mean if you aren’t worried you can put them in your hands and stab people if you are in danger…
I’ve read the entire series, soon I’ll be starting the one about the kids. Yay!.

Can a Modern Women’s Rights Lawyer Find Love with a Medieval Viking??
I read several books in this series when it originally came out in 2018, though I somehow missed some of them. I'm so glad the author brought this fantastic series back to readers' attention again with new covers and new titles. I so enjoyed this delightful tale about the romance of Sigurd and Donna. The books in this series are all relatively quick-read novellas, but this author artfully skirts the typical fatal flaws of short-form fiction. They contain no info dumps—which all readers despise—and the storylines, character growth, and overarching plots are the right size for the limited word real estate. The author keeps a fast pace that makes you flip the pages to see how things will work out. I also love how in this series, she matches up unlikely pairings that truly do work. Something in the women's lives, from their professions to their passions, help the men in the Viking past that the Norn has paired them with. When I first read the initial scene with a female New York lawyer who champions the rights of downtrodden women, I wondered how that would dovetail with medieval Viking times. But I completely trust this wonderful author, and she did make it work…most excellently! We learn in the first scene with the hero that he has a deep-seated distrust of women from what he learned watching his mother and sister betraying the family. He vows to never trust a woman or women. Our modern-day heroine, over time, gets him to view women differently, though it isn't always easy for him to let go and trust. Will she betray him like all the other women in his past? You'll have to read this wonderfully well-done Viking time-travel romance to find out! Highly recommended.
I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Viking's Captive A Viking Time Travel Romance Mariah Stone ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Donna is a New York City lawyer who has a firm grasp on reality, and she knows what she wants. One day, while she's in court, an old lady knitting is sitting in the court, and she has a golden spindle. She hands it to Donna, and before she knows it, she's swooped back in time and straight into a sexy Jarl's bed. When she wakes up, she's sure it all has to be a wonderful dream.
Sigurd saw Donna appear out of thin air, and he believes that she is a goodess, and he sets about worshipping her in the most serious way possible. But when she realizes that it's not a dream her first instinct is to run and he can't let that happen so he takes her as his captive, unwilling to give up any advantage she may bring in the upcoming battles to come. Sigurd has been betrayed by his sister and does not trust women at all. Sigurd would rather put his trust in that trickster Loki than in a woman. As Sigurd's people, which is not a lot after the last raid frantically rebuild to prepare for the next attack, Donna thwarts his wishes by rallying the women to help. But Sigurd's and Donna's daytime clashes lead to nights of pleasure that she has never experienced before. When the raiders finally come, will Donna's self-defense skills help her escape the past, or will the Vikinig age take her life along with her heart and all she loves?
Mariah Stone is fabulous. This author knows exactly what her readers want, and she gives it to us. This story had me from the get-go, and I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed it tremendously and hope you will as well. The main characters were well matched, and they both taught each other what love really is and that they could trust each other. All in all, if you enjoy time travel, this is the book for you.

In the year 2020 Amy Mac Dougall and her sister were on school trip with students, they were at Inverlochy Castle in Scotland, and one of the students fell through a tunnel in the ruins of the castle.Amy went in to rescue the girl .While in the tunnel Amy found a hand print in a rock and fell through time to 1306 at the castle in a tower, and Craig finds her. This is where the story gets very interesting and exciting, I think you will enjoy this book as much as I have, I gave this story a 5 stars as it keep me turning the pages to find out what would happen between Craig and Amy.They both have issues in life, and till the end you never know how things will turn out for the two of them.I enjoyed this book so much I read it and months later was given a audio book as ARC, I fell in love with the book again. Great to listen to!
This was a travel back in time storyline and was Sigurd the Viking jarl and Donna a lawyer from present times story. It was a somewhat a story of personal growth for both. Donna had learned from personal experience not to trust alpha type males and Sigurd did not trust women to do anything "important". During a trial Donna goes against a lawyer that she had personal history with. One that had caused her to fear men. During a break in the trial an norn disguised as an old women told Donna she had a man who needed her help and handed her a golden spindle that sent her way into the past. She lands right in front of Sigurd and others as they were building a wall for defense against a rival clan. At first he thinks she is a goddess sent to help them defeat their enemy. Soon however they are butting heads as Donna and he confront their past hurts and prejudices. As they get to know each other they come to care for each other. Will Sigurd allow the women of his village to be viewed as equals and let them help fortify their village against attack? Can they over come their pasts to forge a future together or will the past define them and end any chance they have. Check out this story if you want to find out.

Just can’t be without the organisational skills of a modern woman.. Norway 871 AD With the loss of his father in battle and the betrayal by his sister to his enemy Fuldarr, Sigurd Randverson is trying to rebuild a fortress around his village before the next attack comes with the little men he has left. New York City 2018 Donna Cox, lawyer who fights for woman that have been discriminated against in the workplace. Finding herself waylaid by a little old lady knitting with a gold spindle in her hand, Donna finds her life upended once she touches it. Sent back in time and with a most frustrating male who doesn’t think that women can do a man’s work she advocates for the woman to help as there are not enough men. This story had me up for hours wanting to see how it ended, just couldn’t go to bed until I’d finished it. A really great read about a stubborn, frustrating but caring Viking that falls in love with a modern woman who inspires not only him but the women in his village to want to do and become more. With a Viking battle forthcoming, a village and a beautiful woman to protect can they all survive? I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review and I also own the boxset.
Imagine falling out of the sky and landing at the feet of a Viking in 871 AD. That's exactly what happens to Donna, a modern women's rights lawyer from New York City. She finds herself transported from 2018 and labelled a goddess by the Viking, Sigurd Randverson. However, Sigurd is a jarl from Norway who has a deep mistrust of women, believing that Donna was sent by the Norn Gods. He is the ultimate alpha male and is unwavering in his beliefs about the role of women in his time.
This is the fifth book in the series, but it can be enjoyed as a standalone. While it was a fast read, I believe it would have been more satisfying if we had more opportunities to delve into and comprehend the era and characters. The protagonists not only face opposition from their Viking adversaries but also from each other as they strive to rescue the village. Is it possible to apply modern values to the world of 871AD?
I really appreciated the pace of the story and the writing style had me eagerly anticipating what would happen next between the two characters. I've read and enjoyed this author before, and would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys time travel stories.

This can be read as a stand alone. While this is the 5th book in the called by a viking series, it seems perfectly fine to read it on its own.
This book contained strong characters, and flowed well. you get some spice and some action in this, and a HEA.
This book is an easy quick read, if you are needing a pallete cleanser and this falls in to general topics you would like, it would be worth giving some time to. Its not a long book which is part of what I contributed to the quick read. While this is an easy read I did find it to be very predictable to me. I had in my head early on how the story would go from its start to its finish, but understand that didn't make it a bad or boring book. I took that as more lets see if I am right.
I did mark the book only 3 stars because it is on the shorter side, and I feel it could have had more depths in parts. The other reason was for the predictability within the story.
If you have some time to kill or just need something to clear your head with, this book could help you do that.

Donna is a civil rights attorney in 2018 NYC, primarily representing mistreated women in the workplace. She has a rather strong..dislike… of forceful, alpha men. Sigurd is a Norse Jarl in 818 AD Norway, full of all the misogyny and pent-up-alpha one man can have. He also has a distrust of women, thanks to some shadiness by his mama and sister.
This is a really short read. I liked it, and I didn’t. Due to the limited pages, I felt like there wasn’t a very clear depth to the characters. For two people who have such a strong dislike and distrust of the other one, based solely on previous issues with other people, they seem to enjoy the hanky panky rather quickly. At times, their dislike of each other was a bit immature.
The ease with which they both just accepted time travel was a bit underwhelming. They just shrugged it off and went on about their day. Maybe, if the story were longer, this could have been fleshed out a little more. It was all too rushed and too smooth. I did enjoy the story, but I wish it could have been longer with more detail.

Terrific rounding up of this amazing series, you’ll love every moment of this amazing read
This was a wonderful compilation of all of the characters and the stories as they are all brought together, the wonderful heroines and their hero’s and the subsequent children and extended families that have come over time and the people that they have been associated with. This was a wonderful compilation of the story and was a wonderful way to wind up the story with all the persons involved and it is without a doubt that this closed the story on a fine night and I cannot wait for the next lot of stories by Mariah who is such a talented historian and writer. I assure you that you will love every moment of this book it is simply a fantastic read. I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.

Donna was a New York lawyer who specialized in discrimination cases. When a little old lady handed her a golden spindle, she found herself in 9th Century Norway in the bed of the most handsome alpha male she had ever dreamed of. Sigurd thought the unconscious woman he found was a goddess sent to help his village build a fortress for protection. What he got was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen who was bent on involving women in men’s work. So they battled each other’s beliefs during the day, and satisfied their desires at night. When the enemy came, women played a key role in protecting their village. In this story, two people found that letting go of beliefs formed from fear and parental misguidance allowed them to find success and happiness. You will find wonderful characters, steamy scenes and emotional awakenings, as well as some heartbreaking moments and the reminder of just how hard life could be for so many people. But in the end, love, courage and forgiveness prevail.

A lawyer from 2018 and a Viking from 818 AD meet and sparks fly.. because they try to set each other on fire. No they don't, but they have a strong distrust for the opposite sex. Donna because of previous relationships and what happened to her mother, and Sigurd because of his mother and sister.
This story is so short, I don't believe in the automatic switch from distrust to love in such a short time. I do like how she showed Sigurd how much help the women could be. But she has to go back, she can't leave four single mothers and the law firm she shares with her mother dangling in the breeze. She returns to 2018 to to win her case, and then have the opposing lawyer buy out her part in the firm? I don't get it. If he was such a son of a butterfly--- actual name calling-- would that make him good?
I can accept that they accepted the time travel situation, she isn't the first one. But the "love" happens so quickly it seems more like an infatuation. Then the epilogue, Donna is pregnant. Ugh, go back to medieval times to have a baby... seems like a nightmare to me.
Planting the seeds of feminism. I really enjoyed the struggle of Donna, an NYC lawyer specializing in discrimination suits, to bring a taste of feminism to the Viking era. Being the strong woman she is, she relishes taking on a hard-headed, set-in-his-ways jarl like Sigurd, who is every bit as stubborn as she is. He's distrustful of all women but Donna shows him that it's foolish to discount the abilities of more than half his available workforce, when every minute counts in building a solid defense to counter an impending raid by another band of warriors. Both Sigurd and Donna are intensely loyal to those under their care and protection, and that drive to protect and defend, plus some high romantic heat, pulls them together. I liked the way each of them was able to overcome their past baggage and come out stronger and better than ever.

Donna and Sigurd's book is a fun, adventure read in the Called by a Viking series. I enjoy that this can be read in any order because there's very little overlap between the books, but they all take you back to around ninth century Scotland. Donna thinks she wakes up in a dream about one of her steamy history romance novels but quickly finds that's not the case, while Sigurd and his people believe her to be a goddess. Sigurd refuses at first to let her out of his sight as he believes she's been sent to help rescue his people from an opposing jarl. Holly agrees eventually to stay but is eager to get back to her civil rights work as an attorney, even with the growing attraction between them. The book is a pretty quick and very engaging read- the series overall has been fun to dive into!.

OMG! I think my heart is still pounding! I think this time travel story is one of the best I’ve read. Headstrong Attorney Donna lives in Today’s New York. She and her mother fight in court for the rights of women in the workplace. Right in the middle of a case, she meets a woman (Norn) who tells her there is a Viking who needs her help. BAM there she is in 870 Norway with one pissed off jarl. He believes that a woman’s place is in the home and taking care of the men. He rules with a strong will and an iron fist! A battle where his people are far outnumbered takes place and the author makes you feel like you’re right there. I was holding my breath just waiting for the axe to fall!! I was hooked From the very beginning. It’s got it all, spies, traders, head butting, bloody battles and last but definitely not least, lust and love. I’m so gladly volunteering to give this review.
Donna is a modern New York lawyer, with no clue what she's meant to do in medieval Norway.
Sigurd is a Viking Jarl who has seen raids, battles, and betrayal... trusting a strangely dressed woman who appears from no where is not on his to do list.
Pain and betrayal may seem an unlikely common ground from which to build trust, get to know one another, and discover if they can work together to save Sigurd's village, but he and Donna discover that powerful shared histories, even if the events are negative and the details different can indeed be the foundation for a bond.
This done in one kindle unlimited book has a nice spin on women's empowerment... there is always some way women can contribute, some meaningful thing we can do, the trick is finding it, and learning how to do it. Rosie the Riveter would be proud.
Donna is a woman of the 21st century, strong and independent, and as such is determined to stand up to Siguard, not just for herself but for all Viking woman, who are strong too and want to prove that they are perfectly able to help! Siguard is a natural protector and so wants to protect all his people, but he and has an issue trusting women. There are a few heated arguments between Donna and Siguard that need to be resolved if they have any chance for a HEA. The attraction between them is very hot and undeniable, but will it last the test of time? Loved this story: woman’s rights are brought to medieval Britain and the Vikings are not happy about it! I voluntarily received and reviewed an ARC copy of the book.
A good, short romance between a modern-day lawyer and a Viking chief. My favorite aspect of their story was the fact that neither caved and totally surrendered their attitude just to accommodate the other.
Donna defends women clients and, due to experience, does not trust alpha-style men. Sigurd has been taught to distrust women and leads his community relying on his decimated contingent of male warriors, marginalizing the women under his charge. This couple have got combative views on how to cement the village's protection and run things that add fire to their relationship. I enjoyed the give and take.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Wow! This book started off with tons of heat and kept the momentum going throughout! Sigurd and Donna were such interesting characters to see teamed up. Donna, a modern-day, strong-willed, independent woman, really adds an extra layer to Viking's Captive because of her background as a lawyer. This becomes an undertone to everything she does in the past, especially when dealing with Sigurd and his distrust of women. This distrust does end up causing conflict between the two, which helps build a crazy amount of tension that makes the romantic scenes that much more passionate! All in all, the action, adventure and romance made this book a page-turning masterpiece! I cannot wait to see what is next by this author!
So sad this is the end of the series. Donna is a lawyer in New York, fighting for women’s rights and opportunities. A person who had to many run ins with Alpha males. So of course the Norn will send her back in time. There is no one more Alpha than a Viking. Sigurd father’s last words to him was not to trust women. His mother and sister had both betrayed his father. So when out of no where a woman appears she must be a goddess. But is she? She definitely doesn’t know her place or follows his orders. Unfortunately some of her ideas will help save his people but can he trust her? As always a page turner and so much packed into this novella. Well done! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. #VikingsCaptive #MariahStone

Donna and her mother are lawyers who have suffered at the hands of men who have little regard for women. They take cases where they can fight for the rights of women against such men. At the court house before one such case, Donna meets an old woman who says that Donna will be the perfect female to help Sigurd; what Donna soon realizes is that Sigurd is a Norseman from hundreds of years in the past. Once they meet, they slowly learn that not all women are untrustworthy and not all strong alpha-men are bad. There are both good/bad and happy/sad times; this is a story of love and forgiveness. If you like time travel romances, this is worth reading.
This is the fifth installment in this series. This is Sigurd & Donna’s story. He’s a ninth century Viking Jarl with a village that’s dependent on him. She’s a twenty first century women’s civil rights attorney from NY. She secretly loves alpha men in bed (who doesn’t?🤭) but can’t abide them in the courtroom. Those sneaky, adorable Norns are at it again with the matchmaking & time travel. I’d love to meet up with them! Donna will literally & figuratively have her hands full with this Viking Jarl & the task she is sent to fulfill. Kudos to this author for making this series so engaging. Let’s continue with the "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin. I highly recommend this series. Cheers. Skoll!
Lawyer Donna fights for women and the underdog. Sigurd is a Viking with war approaching and a sister gone. When she ends up back in 875, things go a little sideways. Loved the characters, their backstories, determination and strength to stand up for the smallest person. The rebuilding of the towers, etc., was a good twist, as was the ending. Terrific storyline where danger, drama, betrayal and surprises are common, but also includes steam, protectiveness and trust. The ending was great and really brought it all together.

Such a good read! Donna is sent back in time where she is met by a Viking jarl. There is a nice level of spice to this book, and the emotional connection between the characters was so great. The only thing that felt off to me was the beginning when she first arrived back in time, she was fully awake and yet she kept thinking she was dreaming. What she allowed to happen while she thought she was dreaming just didn’t work for me. It was still a great read and the ending was emotional in a good way. I will be reading more from this author. I received a free copy of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.
I was a bit disappointed with this one, both the main characters frustrated me, i wanted a bit more hate and less lust. It felt like no matter what sigurd did or said he could just touch Donna and have her fall into his bed. Would've liked some growth first. I guess because of the length of the book both characters opened up to each other pretty quickly, just didn't seem something Sigurds character would do. It bothers me that all the mfc of this series have pretty much all looked the same, same colour eyes and all thin, would've liked some variety. But overall, I have enjoyed this series as quick, easy reads.
I got this book as an arc for a review. I'm going to be very honest in my reviews. So I gave this a 4 star bc while it was very well written and the spicy scenes were hot I feel that the plot could have been better. Also I feel like she gave into sex with a man she doesn't know too easy. I mean at first she thought it was a dream but even after she still slept with him the same day she met him. Other than that it was a rather good book. If you want something to read in one sitting and not too worried about the plot this book is good for that. All in all I really enjoyed this book!!!!

Go Girl Power! A delightful storyline where a Viking learns the value of the women in his clan, and finally reaches for what has eluded him for so long. Past meets future when Donna is sent back in time. Her experiences as a lawyer fighting for women’s rights, sets her against the Jarl, Sigurd. But when danger threatens, can Donna make him see that it should not just be the men who are involved in the defense of their village? I enjoyed this book.
