Nine years ago, Kelsey Everette fled her dear hometown of Harmony Ridge, Tennessee with a broken heart. Now she’s back to care for her favorite aunt after major surgery. Unfortunately someone else is helping Aunt Maggie too: the heartbreaker himself. No longer a teenaged pup, Trevor has grown into a strong and attractive wolf, but his deeply passionate heart hasn’t changed…a heart he says still belongs to Kelsey.
As a wolf who changes form under the full moon, Trevor Sterling believed the girl he loved would have a better life without him. But there are consequences for a wolf who denies his mate. For nine years he’s felt his wolf strength seeping away, a loss he has concealed from his entire pack. Then, one unexpected morning, Kelsey shows up in her aunt’s kitchen and demands he return the spare key, and everything he’s kept buried begins to resurface.
Aunt Maggie asks them to endure each other’s company long enough to help her get well. Trevor has one last chance to claim his true mate and maybe to be a whole wolf again, but first he must prove himself trustworthy. Kelsey longs to rekindle old friendships in the wolf community and, most of all, to belong with Trevor again, but her wolf sent her away once. How can she trust he won’t do it again?
Charlotte Vane writes the sort of romance she wants to read. Her Apex series features a closed bedroom door, found family, wolves, and vampires. She lives in the South and daily savors the weather (yes, even the humidity). She enjoys time in nature, acoustic music, and most desserts.
On one hand I liked the main couple more than I did the first book in the series and the vulnerability of the male lead suited me more because book 1's lead had a trauma hang up, but this guy was literally fading away and that's allllll the heart strings. On the other hand, the tension wasn't as well plotted, like the issues tended to be fairly easy to resolve and it was obvious how they would resolve while the first kept a little more mystery. There was also weirdly more of a sexual undercurrent which ... don't get me wrong. I want my leads to be attracted to each other. That said, I was a little uncomfortable with the idea of them having consummated it as teens. Realistic, I suppose, but as a mom, a little cringe (wasn't shown, just stated that they'd done it around that age). Also, I feel like there were slightly more references to how buff the guy was in this. Like, I get it. They are all big and beefy. That has been established as part of their wolf heritage, but it comes up a lot. Once it's been established, I do not need the reminder ... but it was super sweet and the characters and world building are good.
A sweet, achy mutual pining second chance romance. The characters were lovely, and they grew through the story, which is my favorite thing. I really enjoyed this book!
Definitely couldn't put this one down, which was problematic on a weeknight, but I did finish it and did okay at work today, so I'll call it a win. I found the situation and certain character decisions frustrating in this book, but did still like the characters and relationships, and the way the main romantic relationship unfolded allowed the author to develop her world and the functioning of the beings within it a bit more, so I appreciated that. I appreciated seeing the wolf pack from more of an insider view - even though Kelsey isn't a member of the pack, she grew up with pack kids and is familiar with them and their traditions from the beginning in a way Ember in the last book wasn't. So between the two books, the reader sees the wolves from a complete outsider's perspective, and then from the perspective of a non-wolf who grew up with them.
Even better than the first book! Trevor and Kelsey have so much chemistry, and the friends-to-lovers thing was so cute! I read this in a single day because I just had to see them happy!
Note for squeaky clean readers: some vague implications that the two leads cross a few lines before marriage. Everything is kept vague and off the page.
"This is the Apex Moonbound series by @charlottevanebooks and it was the perfect series for me to binge this past week. I was feeling a fantasyish romance wolf mate book ( if that makes sense, lol). Each book brought something different and a different relationship, and I loved seeing all the couples. And of course, I love how they are in TN! You see strong FMC's , a family (pack) bond, and each MMC is different but loveable. In parts, you get some mental health rep and some and a little suspense at times. They are closed door but still romantic and loveable. You feel for each couple and their story and I just loved reading this series."
This book pulled me in and just wouldn't let me go. I'm a sucker for the "second chance" trope and I really loved Trevor and Kelsey! I definitely recommend this if you enjoy clean paranormal romance!
This is a great follow up to the first story in this series. All of the "wolves" are fine, likeable characters, and I can't wait to see how the rest of them find their true mates. Interesting stories without the smut.
4.75⭐️ i love this series so far! all the characters are so well developed. this was such a good second chance romance and im happy everything worked out in the end
Summary: We have a new leading lady in this one, and she has to return to her former hometown to care for her aunt after surgery.
Unfortunately/fortunately for her, that also leads her to run into her ex-boyfriend/wolf who has some secrets and unfinished business to explore.
Pros: I liked Trevor in the last book, and it was great to get more of his story. The world is fleshed out a bit more and I zipped right through it.
Cons: This one . . . wasn’t bad, but personally, it was my least favorite of the bunch. It just seemed the only conflict could have been worked out by a single straight conversation between the two romantic leads and while it was still clean, it had some more references to underage and premarital sex I could have done without.
Conclusion: Still enjoying the characters in this one, and it’s a nice easy/short read.
Probably a 3.5-star book for me. I like the dynamics we deal with on this one better, but then again I wished Kelsey rightful anger lasted longer that it did. In this one we got a male lead that, with no malice, mistakenly assumes he knows best and withholds some information that would be important to Kelsey. And Kelsey, can't tolerate anything aside absolute honesty from her partner. As you see, honesty is a big point in this one, I liked how it was handled, with the aforementioned exception. It's particularly significant because as a race, the Wolves are very reserved in what they share and whatnot. I love how the problem sort of exploded in their faces, and it was time to make changes or forget about a relationship.
