The Consorts

Rate this book
“For twenty-three years, these sheets have caressed the skin of my body alone. Never holding the entangled limbs of lovers or sweet kisses of a heat familiar to frenzied physical contact. This emptiness has held me firm in its embrace, soaking my bed with the loneliness that seeps from my dreams to my waking reality.

Soon...that will change.

For I am Prince Killian Innis, heir to the throne of Incubi, future ruler of Astoria, and today I will meet my Consorts.”

Innocent and naive Killian Innis has spent his entire life in isolation. Allowed only the company of a few loyal servants, the crown prince eagerly awaited his Consort Ceremony.

Twenty-five Incubi handpicked by the King will serve as his Potentials. Killian must choose five to be his lovers, his protectors, and his advisors. But within the palace lurks a demon, hidden behind suggestive smiles and compelling whispers, waiting to set Astoria aflame.

Killian must navigate through brutality, politics, family feuds, and broken hearts to thwart apocalyptic destruction...all while learning what it truly means to be King.

This book contains dark themes, triggering content, and high heat. It is intended for mature audiences.

I liked it. I enjoyed the premise, the consorts though, I can't say I liked them all. The one I had the most issue was Faust, he didn't even seem as though he wanted to be there, always at the library when the other potentials were vying for Killian's attention.

I also didn't like the way the King treated him, it made no sense to keep that kind of secret from your heir who you are pushing to take the throne. All in all, a good book that could have been better.

So you are an incubus, but beside being the next ruler of the realm, you are an S-Level, one capable of getting pregnant. So that means you are kept from sexual energy until it is time to choose your mates. You are isolated, kept apart except for family, and your entire future rests in the hands of 5 men. Men who will compete for your affections. That's Killian's life, and it's time for him to pick his consorts. Those who will rule at his side.

This is an MMMMMM Mpreg, so basically all the MM hotness you can imagine. But there is also growing and learning. Even though Killian isnt a child, he is so unsure of what to do, or how to be a good partner because those relationships were denided. This is his one shot to escape the loneliness he has been drowning in. But you also get a taste of different troupes all in one, instant attraction, jealousy, hist/comfort (kinda), even forced together. It makes for a great dynamic between the characters.

Not enough for you yet? What if there was murder? And attempts on Killain's life? What about meddling gods and familiars? Thought that would help, because that is what kept me engaged in this amazing book, and what kept me up at night reading it. Killian maybe sweet and innocent, but he is still a future King, it's just takes him a little while to remember that. I didnt get an advanced copy of this book, and I'm here to tell you I got the paperback because I enjoyed this story so

I liked it more than I expected given the review by my one friend that read it, and yet not as good as I thought it could be.

Too much time spent with Killian being indecisive and feeling sorry for himself, and acting less strong than it seemed he should be (mentally, physically, emotionally) given his skill in fighting and all those decades of training/education/preparation to eventually take over as King. If that was to establish a H/C element, then it was too drawn out. A moment or two of hesitation, fear and self-doubt would have sufficed.

I DID like the plot twist. Sort-of-but-not-really saw it coming (pegged the wrong family member) and that the HEA didn't come without hard work and sacrifice. (Quite a few of the characters were Jossed.) Especially liked that Rem and Zev also had a romantic connection outside of (or in addition to) their relationship with Killian. Kinda wish we'd been given more on Faust - at one point he was a potential red-herring and it was totally believable since his character felt the least fleshed out. Adored Drek; he seemed like the least likeable at first (to the reader and Killian given he was last chosen and technically the only one left) and then he completely broke my hear and won me over as my favorite. And Caspian was quite the minx!

Also, I get why the King felt obligated to his brother but it should NEVER have come at the expense of his son.

All that said, I'd totally read more by this author!

interesting

This book was very long felt like 700 pages or so but I’m not complaining cause it was amazing. My only issue with the book and why I didn’t rate it as 5 stars is that when you write poly/harem romance books you need to be very careful in how you implement the characters dynamics. Let’s be honest we all knew who the 2 favoured consorts were since we only got to read both of their intimacy with Killian. If anything my favourite’s consort was actually the 5th one.
For non spoiler alert I will not say who he is but he is my favourite. After reading his story you can see and sense his bitterness. I wish we were given more scenes with his 3, 4, & 5 consort.
I am also not a fan of the relationship 2 of the consorts developed in the book. It’s like you put it there but never really explore it and we only get to read it once and never fully comprehend how they both got to that stage. It would’ve really brought the book together if after killian had gotten all his consort we could read through their POV and get a better understanding of what they bring into the relationship that makes the dynamic work.
We see some of Killians power but we’re never given a depth of it and he never really uses it.
Overall it’s ok I just needed harmony in the dynamics. But the story was interesting and worth the read. Would I read it again? Probably not but book is good to read when you have nothing else to read and are really into the whole fantasy.

For such a long book, it managed to keep my interest throughout, and I finished it fairly quickly. That being said the book was not without its problems. One major problem was the disparity between each of the consorts. It bothered me that each was given a rank and the lowest rank was made to feel not as important as the higher ranks. When it was first mentioned I expected the ranks to be assigned magically, but no Killian was the one to assign the ranks based on how he felt about each one. Because of this I never felt a true connection between all of the consorts. It also bothered me that each of the consorts really only had a relationship with Killian and not among themselves. I would have liked it better if they all were in love with each other.

Also, much of the conflict was a bit confusing. I’m still not sure after reading this book why the King did not tell Killian what was going on. Keeping him in the dark made absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. I also really and truly doubt Killian’s ability to rule effectively after the events that transpired. I can’t image that anyone would trust him.

All in all, the book kept me entertained. It was way darker than expected and I’m not really sure I liked the ending, but still it was an enjoyable read. I would read more by this author in the future.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I had high hopes. Incubi, a contest to pick consorts, and political intrigue? Yes. Yes. And Yes!
Instead I got endless plots that never went anywhere. Characters that changed their motivations whenever the current plot dictated. Mass confusion and zero political intrigue. Characters made weird choices constantly. I would say that they were out of character but that would imply that they stayed in character in the first place. Our main character couldn't keep his eye on the ball and was constantly chasing his tail. I honestly don't know how he survived the book.
I just finished reading it and I'm struggling to remember all of the plot twists and changes in this book. There were way too many. Pick a plot any plot please!
Also just a pet peeve of mine but adding an all knowing powerful character that gives answers and power when it fancys is just boring. And at the 70% mark too... it just screams "I don't know how to fix this!"

This book was inspired and captivating. The detail of the characters, their world and customs, was so in depth it felt like I was there in person. There is so much going on in this story. Forging a relationship with not one, but five men. Plots and schemes. Secrets and lies. All of this together built a story I could not put down. I am excited to see what this new author has in store!

All I need in a book really.

Definitely shouldn't have read this in Ramadan but it was an exception worth making🤣

I honestly didn’t expect to love this so much. On paper, incubi, consorts, mpreg, courtly deception etc all sounds like a starter pack for a trashy, overdone romance, and I was worried this would fall into the category of additive smutty trash with no substance (and I’m not judging anyone who reads those!) - but I was pleasantly surprised by this.

I loved each of the consorts, and while at first, I had immediate favourites, each one grew on me, and I saw their purpose. I also loved the pace of this book. It’s definitely a slow burn in terms of the plot, but I was happy to enjoy the first 40-50% of the book just revolving around the blooming relationship with the consorts.

Surprisingly, for a book I largely picked up for the romance, I was heavily invested in the plot. The sinister backdrop to Killian’s life evolves (albeit at a slowburning pace) - and the court secrecy, lies and betrayal felt well thought out. Often, i find with this genre that the “plot” serves as a poor backdrop, with the mere function to fill up gaps in the book so it’s not all smut. Consequently, I often find myself reading apathetically, never truly invested, nor fearful for any of the characters, as a HEA is so obviously imminent

This was not the case here! I adored Killian so much. He truly is so, so pure, and while I sometimes find myself cringing at such bashful, naive protagonists, I honestly adored him. And not in that weird fetishistic way where you obsess over ~purity~ and infantilise them (normally with a partner that is the embodiment of ~machoness~) I truly admired his kindness, empathised with him in the face of extensive (fucking traumatic!!) adversity, and loved seeing him finally experience love.

Consort wise - I’ll keep it spoiler free for the other ones, but I loved Rem! Having recently finished the fae chronicles, the beast within Rem somewhat reminds me of Ryder’s beast, and the bond they have definitely made me nostalgic of my former love for that series (before the author made it shit and drove that ship into the ground loool - but I digress!)

This was painful, lovely, addictive, and exactly what I would like to see in a king x consort romance. This was tropey in just the right way, without it taking away from the reading experience💜

I couldn't stop reading. It's completely worth the read.

Update 10/18/23: This has to be my fourth time reading this book. I'm still just as impressed as the first read. I'm so glad the second book is coming out sometime in 2024. This author needs to keep writing. I can't wait to read her books for years to come.

January 30, 2021
This book keeps you on a slow, simmering burn for a quarter of the book. The rest is hot, hot, hot. Not only that, the author has devised a complicated and enthralling mystery/thriller. I couldn't stop reading! The author had me on the edge of my seat and guessing what would happen next and who was to blame.
The only complaints are the author needs to have the book line edited. Also, some of the phrases and language could do with some professional editing. It would take this book from great to phenomenal.
I'd love to see more books in this beautiful and rich world she has built. More, please N.A. Moore.

Phew. This one was a long read. At 826 pages, this is the longest book that I've read in awhile. I think it worked out for the best though.

Killian is the heir to the incubus throne. He is an S-level incubus, which means that even though he is a male, he has a womb. If you are familiar with the omegaverse, it is very similar. This book also has m-preg in it. N. A. Moore takes time- and lots of pages- to establish Killian's relationship with his newly chosen consorts. This length made the romance aspect more natural and less rushed. Moore doesn't stop there, going on to have Killian and his men run the gauntlet as they try to uncover a traitor within the castle walls.

This was an interesting read, full of action. I would recommend giving it a shot.

This is a new to me author and I rarely read books this long...but I was intrigued by the prospects of Incubus. It is rare to find a good Incubus or even mm vampire book that I usually jump at the chance.
I am glad I did. This book is unique, intriguing, full of interesting characters, a well-developed plot with lots of twists. I will say it has lots of sex and some are needed especially since the book is incubi and that is how they feed.
Killian is being groomed to be king and has been isolated most of his life to keep him pure. Being an S level Incubi he is able to give birth and since he turned 24 he goes through a ceremony to choose five consorts from 25 that his father has carefully chosen. Then there is the Ranking ceremony and mating ceremony where each gets so many days to get him pregnant.
The main part of the book was Killian choosing his men. I liked that he was indeed picky and wanted to spend time with them and not just pick by looks or physical attraction. He wanted someone that would grow to love him and he loves not just protectors. I loved this. There was a little instant attraction as his heart seemed drawn to one man, physical attraction to one and so forth.
There is drama, danger, suspense, as it seems someone or something is after the prince to take over the kingdom. There are lots of twists and I will admit this book is engaging and you need to have time set aside because I figured a week for this and read it in three nights. (I didn't want to put it down when I did LOL). The ending was quite a surprise and you will need some tissue.
So having said that The reason I didn't give it a five was I did feel the sex scenes could have been a little shorter and I found myself skimming through them after the first couple. That would shorten the book just a little and tighten it up.
( REVIEWERS NOTE) I only review on story and characters not on editing or typos... having said that there are a lot of typos and if that bothers you I wouldn't get the book if not just ignore it and enjoy a fabulous story!)

ok honestly i'm slightly biased towards wattpad books given i started reading mm through wattpad but this was not it. the premise was really really interesting. so interesting i was willing to overlook the mpreg. but the premise is one of the few things that was actually engaging.

first up, the worldbuilding. there is a glossary in front, which i appreciate, but honestly that glossary did not cover everything. i knew what types of succubi/incubi there were, yes, but then halfway through terms like Clouds and Gods started to pop up. and i got totally lost. because near nothing about clouds and gods and demigods were mentioned before. also, i'm...still not sure where killian's telekinesis came from.

plus the plot was so, so simple. but the book made everything sound so convoluted and almost every character was cryptic and secretive. well, except for that one character who just casually appeared and revealed everything to killian after 400 pages of him and his trying to figure out the villain's identity and next moves.

the smut was unexciting, the romance mid. oh, and killian did practically nothing in the first 70% pages of the book except choosing his consorts, sleeping with them, vomit, and cry. the consorts were more bearable, if not only because their characters were written to be more useful and caring and protective.

there were also some really odd occurrences, like . such endless frustration smh.

Much better than I thought it would be

I kept putting this one off even when it showed up in my recommendations because the whole multiple partner thing is not my thing. But its not really like that, they all aren't all sleeping together. I thought the character development was very good and the storyline also was very strong. I would recommend.

What an adventure

I don’t even know what I just read, but it was a very interesting journey. I was kept engage the entire time up until the end. My imagination couldn’t quite get there when it came to the characters’ appearances because they were just too weird with the horns and the tails and the crazy coloring. It took some mental gymnastics to make some major tweaks to where it was more digestible. The crazy plot made the adventure worth it!

This book was great!

This book was great! Loved the characters, the story, passion, action, intrigue. The twists and turns are numerous, the ending a great surprise. Watching Killian develop into such a strong character was wonderful. I loved all his consorts, especially Rem and Zev. I loved this book and can't wait to see what the author comes up with next! Definitely a favorite for me.

4.5 rounded up, but this very much could have and should have been a 5, so let's get into the nitty gritty, shall we?

First, the Trigger Warnings/Issues:

- There is a scene involving sexual assault. It is brief, but detailed, and causes psychological trauma to the character for a time after. There is also some psychological spookiness happening (detailed nightmares). If either of these are something that triggers you, do not read this book.
- This story involves poly relationships (harem) as well as mpreg. If either of these aren't your thing, do not read this book.
- This book desperately needs an editor. I can power through editing issues when I enjoy the story. I very much enjoyed this story, but holy jumping shitballs, this book is RIDDLED with editing problems. It began to irritate me when I got half way through, and it got worse from there. If editing issues irk you, you very well might DNF this book.
- The ending felt rushed, and left me more questions than answers. I felt some major foreshadowing that was presented was not actually addressed, and it confused the hell out of me when the book just ended. For such a long read, I expected things to be tied up a little neater.
- The main character cries.... all.the.time. At first, I totally understood. N.A. Moore did a great job setting up the events explaining this character's issues and why he would be easily upset, but the crying just went on and on and on and rarely stopped. So many pages of crying and sobbing and tears welling up. It felt excessive and unnecessary.

With that out of the way, let's get into what I LOVED about this book:

- The characters are so well written. The entire cast of this book had their own unique personality, wants, needs, desires, motives. It made for a delightfully eclectic cast and helped keep my constant interest wondering what they will do next.
- I became heavily invested in the main characters (there are 6). Not all of them get the same spotlight, but I understood them, and felt with them. N.A. Moore did an outstanding job really getting me into the head of these characters and becoming emotionally invested in their well being.
- The setting is so incredibly unique, but also excellently built. I had no problem understanding the concepts and powers presented in this world as they were revealed, and it's SO refreshing to me when fantasy is explained in such a believable manner. Major kudos to you, N.A. Moore!
- The sexy times are very sexy, and there's a lot of sexy times. Just how I like it.
- I was constantly second guessing myself trying to predict what would happen, only to be thrown in another direction entirely. I love seeing plots unfold so unpredictably. It really kept my attention.

If you are not repelled by the Trigger Warnings and concepts presented here and can power through the editing issues, give this book a shot. I'm not joking when I say I spent 2 days and 1 night being glued to this book. If not for some of the issues presented here, I guarantee you this book would be rated much higher. N.A. Moore had me wrapped around her little finger as she guided me through the characters I came to really understand and become emotionally invested in.

N.A. Moore, thank you for creating something so unique. Truly a breath of fresh air.

I wasn't sure how to rate this. On the one hand, I drop books without a second thought if I can tell they won't work for me, but I read all 400+ pages of this. On the other hand, I had to take frequent breaks from reading it, and I wouldn't say I actively enjoyed any of it.

The main thing in this book's favor was its creativity. I had not read other versions of this books before. Unfortunately, that meant more worldbuilding was needed, and this book didn't always deliver it. For example, I had pictured this world as being without electricity until game consoles were mentioned several hundred pages in. I also, for some reason, kept wanting to picture the palace being underground, even though trees and gardens were described.

This book needed much more editing. The verb tenses were all over the place, wrong names were used a few times, and some paragraphs and sentences were incomplete and just stopped midthought, with no end punctuation. I also couldn't help but feel the book didn't need to be as long as it was. It sort of felt as if this should have been multiple books instead of one, but I couldn't figure out a good place to separate the books without later books ending up in a completely different direction from the initial ones. The initial ones also may have lacked much action. As such, I think the actual issue was with the pacing more than anything. I know the MC is an incubus and feeds on sex, and I know the ceremony required 15 days of non-stop sex, but the sex got repetitive, and I ended up skimming a lot of it. By the end of the book, I had the attitude that so many people have when reading "Hamlet": "Just do SOMETHING already!" Speaking of which, I thought the pacing was off with the last chapter and epilogue as well. I thought the last chapter was essentially the epilogue and wrapped things up well, but then we got the real epilogue and it mostly just raised more questions for me, and not in a way that seemed to build anticipation for a sequel.

I also didn't think this worked well as a love story, which was a shame because it should have been 5-6 love stories in one. I just never got that invested in the relationships, and I never really bonded with any of the love interests. For that matter, I also wasn't a huge fan of the MC, who made lots of dumb choices and had problems respecting the need for other people's consent.

Even if there is a sequel, I don't think I'll read it.

I think I expected it to be a bit like The Selection or a Bachelor type book but Killian didn't really spend that much time getting to know and selecting the consorts. That part only took like a third of the book and then it was royal/demon intrigue/a pregnancy. Which could have worked but it felt like a lot of nothing was going on, especially with the King not doing anything because of "reasons". The descriptions of clothes and what the characters looked like tended to drag on. The smut aspect was also just ok and I did wish that there was more development with the relationships with his consorts. Really all we know about Faust is that he likes to read, there was definitely favoritism going on and a harem is only as strong as it's weakest character. Still not the worst harem I've read. Though that epilogue seemed kind of unnecessary when we could have had some sort of cute family scene instead. And that cover is gorgeous!

Summary: Killian is an extremely sheltered and therefore naive prince. It's finally time for him to choose five consorts and get impregnated by them. Killian gets pregnant and he and his consorts start getting attacked and he has to figure out what's going on.

Steamy, Intriguing, Gripping

I REALLY enjoyed this book! When I first saw the length, I thought, Oh Boy, I'm in for alot of repetition but NO. This story flows very nicely. I can usually figure out what's going to happen, who the bad guy is and how it's all going to be wrapped up pretty early on because most authors give you all the major details right away. I really loved the twists in this story. When I thought I had it figured out, BAM another piece of the puzzle gets thrown down. I also love getting to know the characters so well that I get emotionally invested in the story. I definitely recommend this book! Can't wait for the next one.

There’s a lot to like..

I enjoyed this read. Fast paced and easy to fall into. A few editing errors towards the end and some mix ups in grammar but not enough to throw you all the way out of the story. My only thing was I wished Killian had a bit more of a backbone! It felt a lot like things just happened to him and he didn’t even react with any authority or power just fell apart crying. That got a little irritating. Enjoyed the other consort personalities though!

trigger warning: person that can get pregnant being used as what can only be seen as a breeding cow & being kept in the dark about every thing in regards to sex to a point that can only be seen as abuse, I’m sorry but you can’t consent to shit when you don’t even know what’s going on & also don’t even get me started on Rem’s ”beast”

I have mixed feelings because though the book was too long, it mostly kept my attention. I did begin to skim towards the end so that I could finally get to the resolution.

The plot twist was nice, I did see it coming, but it's not glaringly obvious if you don't know what to look for. My issue with it is that it was a veryy long buildup and then BAM! It's resolved. Now, don't get me wrong, there is a lot happening during the resolution scene, but it all came to light and was handled within one chapter. And like everyone else has mentioned, King Elis's behavior was so ridiculous. There is NO WAY a true King would allow all of that to happen. And to his own heir no less. It was a great plot with a subpar execution.

Poor Drek. Poor Drek a second time... OMG. Poor Drek AGAIN. Seriously, what is the author's deal with hurting this guy? He just can't catch a break. Him and Caspian were my favorite's 💚💛

1/3 of the book was Killian throwing himself a pity party (tbh, book could have been like 100 pages shorter if the same "I'm so lonely" speech didn't play on a loop in Killian's head). Another third of the book was about Killian and Rem (again, book could've been another 100+ pages shorter but for whatever reason the author just really wants to shove their relationship down your throat). And the last 1/3 of the book was about the plot, the other Consorts, the pregnancy, and the side characters. Killian never truly developed his confidence and relied on his Consorts and the familiar up until the very end. The relationships were obviously uneven and it pissed me off that Killian had the AUDACITY to get mad when his Consorts/Potentials would get jealous but made ZERO effort to hide the fact that Rem was his favorite. He even went so far as to say he wanted to get rid of the Rankin but still treated Rem and Zev better than the rest. Honestly, it seemed like if Killian had the choice, he wouldn't have 5 Consorts and would have just Rem. Partners not all being equal in the relationship is one of my biggest pet-peeves in Poly romances.

The intimacy was frequent (obviously, given they're Incubi), but wasn't anything special. I know Killian was a virgin, but I fully expected his Consorts to bring out some kinky experiences. It was... lacking. Also, I waited, and waited, and waited for a scene with Killian and all 5 of his Consorts but it never came. Matter of fact, even the scenes where he WAS with more than one Consort, they didn't all play together as a whole.

In the end, I was left with a multitude of questions and no answers.

Words cannot fully capture the emotional rollercoaster this book put me through. From the very first page, I was drawn into a world unlike any I’ve encountered before. The plot is impeccably crafted and refreshingly unique; I’ve never seen something written in this format, with such a wicked and addictive storyline.

Initially, I was intrigued by the whole harem concept, even though I’m not usually a fan of dark themes or stories that delve too deeply into family affairs and the “you have to solve the mystery” trope. But this book defied my expectations in the most incredible way. The author’s skillful storytelling kept me hooked, distracting me from my usual preferences and pulling me deeper into the narrative with every page.

This book gutted me in ways I didn’t think possible. Just when I thought I had a handle on what was going to happen, the story took a 360-degree turn, leaving me flabbergasted and eager to find out more. Each plot twist was a masterstroke, and I found myself addicted to uncovering what would happen next and what could possibly go wrong.

The author’s ability to weave the perfect amount of gore into the story is commendable. It added to the intensity without overshadowing the beautiful love dynamic the main character experiences. The balance between darkness and romance was flawlessly maintained, creating a captivating and emotionally charged reading experience.

This book has set an incredibly high bar for my future reads. I can only hope to find something as compelling and masterfully written. To anyone considering picking up this book, I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after you turn the final page.

1000000000/10.

This was such an interesting story, and I really enjoyed it a lot. However, I took away a star for a few different reasons. First, there were a large amount of editorial mistakes--including at least one major continuity error--and some other odd writing choices, such as including detailed accounts of the appearance of characters who weren't important to the story and giving a ton of descriptions of what people were wearing for no real reason than to point out their attractiveness. The book also ended a little abruptly with a lot of telling as opposed to showing. Then, I really thought that there'd be more character development for the consorts; for example, we barely know anything about Faust other than that he likes to read and has a good singing voice. Last, I really expected there to be more intimate relationships between the members of the harem, but only two of the consorts ever interact intimately with each other while everyone else just takes turns with Killian. Despite my issues with this book though, it really was a unique and fascinating story.
