Schmucks: Lenny Bruce, Groucho & Me

Rate this book
Joe Klein is a failing Jewish comic. He wanders into a New York diner just before the great New York blackout of 1965. Imagine his surprise when comedy legend Lenny Bruce (a year before his death) staggers into the same diner. Imagine his even greater surprise when Groucho Marx turns up to meet & berate Lenny. Sparks will fly, reputations tumble, no comedy prisoners will be taken. When Harpo turns up things get really surreal.

SCHMUCKS is Roy Smiles first published play. It had its UK premier at the Battersea Arts Centre in 1992 then its American premier at The Wilma Theatre in Philadelphia in 2009. His obsession as a child was the Marx Brothers. There were his gods until an Uncle gave him a Lenny Bruce album. Lenny became the hero of his late teens. This play mis a tribute to them both.

Roy Smiles other plays include YING TONG (about Spike Milligan), PYTHONESQUE (about the Monty Python team), THE LAD HIMSELF (about Tony Hancock) and YEAR OF THE RAT (about George Orwell).
