This is the first book in the Harcourt Sisters trilogy -- perfect for those who love sweet and clean Regency romance with a hint of mystery.
Charlotte and Hugh grew up on neighboring estates and were best friends from the time that she was five years old. When Hugh, the second son of the Earl of Milcheston, went off to war, he promised to ask for Charlotte’s hand in marriage when he returned. However, when he did come home, he was not only bodily and mentally injured, but he was now the Earl of Milcheston due to the deaths of his father and brother. To say that he was overwhelmed would be an understatement, and although he still loved her, he was determined not to marry her, as she deserved better than him. And so the story continues with Charlotte mourning the loss of the love of her life, and Hugh desperately trying to let her go. Their misery simply leaps off the page. Erroneous information, jealousy and guilt tormented Hugh, as he watched men flock towards Charlotte. She, on the other hand, was torn between her heart’s desire and her duty to her family. This is an emotional story buoyed by Charlotte’s unwavering hope and her unconditonal love. It is well written, emotionally engaging, and has a lovely and satisfying ending!.

This was Hugh & Charlotte's book. Charlotte Harcourt felt the weight of her family on her shoulders. As the eldest Harcourt sister and the first to launch into society, she needs a good match to secure a future for her mother and younger sisters. But her heart is pining for her childhood friend and neighbor, Hugh Dempsey, Earl of Milcheston. The man who has been missing, presumed dead, for months, until his return to inherit the earldom from his father. But Hugh is a changed man. Damaged both physically and in his very soul. This one gave me all the feels. And am voluntarily leaving my review.
Sweet, low drama Regency romance with h Charlotte waiting for her childhood sweetheart to return from the war and propose only to have him push her away without explanation on his return. For the reader Hugh's reasons are not a mystery- he is injured and damaged from the war and does not think he is still worthy or able to give Charlotte the life she deserves. A bit of a family dilemma and an injury overcome true loves obstacles.
Really enjoyed this. Reminded me of a retelling of Beauty and Beast. Charlotte has never gotten over her first love Hugh, but he hasn’t been seen in tears and is presumed dead. Being the eldest sister she needs to get married soon and then Hugh returns back in to her life to claim his Earl title. But Hugh has changed both mentally and physically since she last saw him.

Hugh and Charlotte loved each but war and his injuries changed him and even though as an earl he is now more eligible he keeps pushing her away towards other suitors without telling her what is really wrong. For the sake of her family Charlotte is willing to accept another but I don’t see her being happy as her heart still belongs to Hugh.
