Challenging the Law Enforcement Organization : The Road to Effective Leadership

Rate this book
The book, Challenging the Law Enforcement Proactive Leadership Strategies, is a soft cover book that is a summary of many of my presentations. Among the topics discussed are chapters on the impact of living and policing an unskilled and violent society, why law enforcement managers fail to successfully impact their agencies, and chapters on self-management, communication, motivation, and being more effective in our personal lives. Many of these latter “strategy” chapters have examples of proactive techniques used by law enforcement managers as well as “action items” to apply the principles examined in each chapter. I admit, I have not studied leadership as much as I should. I have been fortunate to have made it as far as I have without really trying to hone my skills in this area. I don't always trust leadership material, because I have noticed that some organizations focus on ideas and techniques that have more to do with how to be effectively led, so that others follow your example. Still others stress the organization as the leadership model, and ask you to drink their particular flavor of kool-aid.

This book is different. Short, at only about 150 pages, it offers some serious strategy for day-to-day leadership in Law Enforcement. The Author discusses why these strategies apply to law enforcement, but they really would work well in any organization. I have started some of the exercises, and I have made plans to implement the ideas in this book. I am glad I found it.

My organization hosted Dr. Jack Enter as part of the leadership course for newly promoted supervisors a couple years ago. I had the opportunity to attend the event, being a recently promoted sergeant, and I am ever thankful that I did. Dr. Enter effectively and with much humor covered all of the information contained in this book during that course. I walked away with practical tools on how to be an effective leader and manager, not just pie in the sky ideas and philosophies that so many other courses and books provide. This book is not long, it is not wordy, and it is not the most profound thing you will ever read. It is, however, very practical, very direct, and will help elevate your likely status as a mediocre leader/manager to one that is above average—assuming you implement what you learn. I’m in the beginning process of doing so myself, and I can already see the fruit. It will also directly correlate to your home life as well. This is a recommended read for all involved in law enforcement management, regardless of level.

If you work in law enforcement, you will recognize the organization(s) you work(ed) for. It is a good book for those looking to promote. The big thing though is that as much as you can want to be a better leader, if your department sucks, putting this into play will be hard.

Very good book. I recommend all leaders in law enforcement or any public safety organization to read this fine book.
