Grandloving: Making Memories with Your Grandchildren, 4th Edition

Rate this book
Created by a mother- and daughter-in-law team, this sourcebook lays out a game plan to help grandparents grow closer to their grandchildren. Incorporating advice from more than 350 families nationwide, the guide offers specific tips for bonding with children, from babies to teens. Among its hints are more than 200 easy, low-cost, do-together and long-distance activities; ideas for handling visits, holidays, and family traditions; valuable resources; and selected book reviews. Grandparents will learn how to have a successful visit with their new grandchild, create fun projects and gifts—like yummy-smelling playdough, photo placemats, peek-a-boo books, and musical instruments made from common household items—and explore science and the outdoors. Grandparents are also given insight into how to find common ground, “be real,” and maintain a close relationship during what is often a difficult time for older grandkids.

My interview with Sue Johnson -

What inspired you to write the book? The arrival of our first grandson and our wanting to be part of his life despite the fact that we were on opposite coasts.

What is your favorite chapter in the book – and why? Love them all - like a baby - each chapter brings good things!

Do you have other books you have written? If yes, what are they? Just the 4 editions but each has so much new material that we feel like we've written 4 books!

Is there a particular event that stands out to you that helped you become an author? Looking in the bookstores and library for a good book on grandparenting when our first grandson was born and not being able to find anything helpful or useful. Mentioned this void to our daughter-in-law and said, "Gosh, I could write a better book than what is out there," and Julie said, "Well, Mom!" followed by a quick, "How would you like a co-author." The rest is history! We've been a co-author team ever since!

Was there a person in your life that believed in you even more than you believed in yourself? If so – who was that person? My husband

What advice would you give to writers wishing to have their works published? Write about your passion

Who is your favorite author? Barbara Kingsolver

What is your favorite quote? My grandmother always told me to "Say little, but do much!"

Personal note: I had the opportunity to meet Sue while attending Book Expo in Washington, D.C. We spent an evening together at a very fun book design party - presented by the Cover Girls... Sue is a spunky, fun lady with a passion for living! :) You'll love her book ...

I read the updated one for 2010. Lots of games and activities for little kids easily visited. Not so much for older kids and those not so easily visited. A little annoyed with some notes that mention safety. We are not children. I thought this book would have more "far" ideas.

This book is a treasure of tips and suggestions for grandparents who want to connect with their grandchildren -- from babies to teens, near and far! Well organized and very user friendly, it is a wonderful resource to grab as the grandkids head over to your house! Or if you’re struggling with how to reach those far away grandkids, read a few pages! I’m sure you will find fun, effective ways to reach across the miles.

Thanks for giving me this book, Kourt. Kristen and Drew- thanks for giving me a reason to read it. Lots of practical information- much of it was common sense, and I hope I will retain mine when the time comes. Some fun ideas for activities for all ages.

A little too 'precious' for me so far, but I will persevere.

Now that I have finished reading, I will stand by that first impression as far as the writing style. But there are a LOT of ideas worth exploring and trying. Most of them are pretty natural/common sense, but it's good to be reminded.
