This first book in what promises to be a great new series is a very engaging and entertaining novel in the fantasy genre. Guaranteed to entertain kids and adults alike, this book would be particularly memorable to enjoy as a family. The author's distinctive take on his magical and mystical world is unique, refreshing, and fun.
The whimsical tale begins with two wizards battling it out over a supreme magical force which the evil and power-hungry one covets. Although injured in the fight, the magical essence manages to escape. It is accidentally transported off its home planet of Eldora and makes its way to Earth where, unbeknownst to the 16 year old Dylan Murphy, it merges with his body in order to heal and survive. Strange and wonderful things begin to happen as the unsuspecting young boy from Colorado begins to inadvertently invoke extraordinary new magical abilities from within.
The evil sorcerer soon locates the magical essence, and deploys his minions to retrieve his prize. Opposing forces from the kingdom of Colabra are dispatched to protect the boy and the magical entity now living inside him. Before they know it, Dylan and a small group of friends are whisked away to the enchanted planet of Eldora and find themselves in a struggle to save each other and the planet from a powerful wicked foe.
Full of action, adventure, and enchantment, this story takes you on a delightful ride across very real venues in the state of Colorado as well as some unique, beautiful, and strange lands on Eldora. If you enjoy fantasy books, you'll quickly become a Dylan fan as you accompany him and his friends on this incredible, supernatural journey.
Wow! I'm impressed. Not only did I love this book, but my kids couldn't get enough. A contemporary Harry Potter, complete with a great story line and characters. Such an easy read. I looked for other books by this author, "Brian Glenn", but it looks like this is his first. The first few chapters kept my interest, but I have to tell you, this author just kept getting better, chapter after chapter. I read some exceptional reviews on Amazon that ultimately led me to give this book a try, and boy am I glad I did. Several folks seem to believe a second book is forthcoming after reading their reviews. All I can say is I'm ready for the next one. I'm a fan! Who knows maybe we'll see it on the big screen one day, it would be awesome. I love the way a new spin was placed on magic and mystical powers, what a rock'in idea. There was quite a few references to Colorado, where the main character lives. I've never been, but I'm thinking planning a trip is in order. Super read...
Dylan Murphy and The Magic Touch by Brian Glenn is an interesting story that can be enjoyed at any age. The basic storyline is somewhat familiar with an evil wizard (Zondor) bent on conquering on the world (Eldora). The kingdom of Colabra is the biggest holdout left and if he defeats them Eldora will fall to him. All he has to do is vanquish his old foe and enslave his magic and he will have all the power he needs. Luckily things don't quite go the way he has planned and the the magic (a sentient wand) escapes and ends up on planet Earth.
Cue Dylan Murphy, a typical teenager, who is about to inherit powers that no one in our world has ever seen before. Dylan is taking a holiday ski vacation with his dad when he starts to realize that something about him has changed severely. When the voice of the wand starts to talk to him he is totally blown away by the possibilities. What he doesn't realize is that Zondor is still hunting for the magic that Dylan now possesses and will stop at nothing to get it. One evening at dinner with his dad and his friend Lisa a couple of Zondor's minions show up to take the wand. They run into some agents from Colabra and there is a magical battle that ends up teleporting everyone to Eldora. This is where things really start to pick up as far as a resolution to the problem with Zondor.
This book took me a couple of hours to read and for the most part I enjoyed the story. It reminded me a bit of the Harry Potter series with some of the magical castings. The second half of the book had a few parts were the flow of the writing was not as smooth as the rest of the book. I would recommend this book for parents whose kids enjoy a good fantasy tale or as a family read. It could very easily become something that I read to my daughter as she grows up. Dylan Murphy and the Magic Touch scores a 3.5 overall score with a 4 being easily attainable with another round of edits. The second book in the series is due out sometime in the next couple months and it is worth keeping an eye on.
This is an excellent book. It is an easy read and great for kids. It has many references to Colorado in it as well. Nice to read a fantasy book that deals with current events. I can't wait for book 2!
Good read, easy read. Nicely blends wizardry and modern technology together. Loved the characters and storyline. Perfect read for pre-teens and young adults. I enjoyed it as well at 51.
