Mercurial: Sustainable through it all

Rate this book
"Leave your expectations at the door and come as you are."

Mercurial is my attempt to heal my heart as I navigated through my twenties into my thirties, it is about love, loss, apathy, faith, and immeasurable growth that only comes through going through the trenches. Having an overactive mind and heart birthed a lot of creativity through the years and I dedicated my time to write down every single thing. I believe things do not happen by coincidence so if you are reading this, we probably have similar hearts.

Looking through the lens of a perspective so unconditionally raw yet meaningful! The way Sierra writes captivates the hearts of all who read the inspiring words of her journey in Mercurial. Whether you can relate or not, she reminds those who feel vulnerable or unworthy, that they are not alone! Her book perfectly captures the desperate need of healing and comforting from beginning to end. Through the shitty hardships to the highest peak, Sierra beautifully and thoughtfully writes about her tribulations, memories, and the people who have made an impact in her life (positively or negatively) all of which have shaped her into the most INCREDIBLE human, or shall I say divine vessel, 😘 she is today! She continues to grow with so much grace! Not a day goes by I can’t help but think about the way she has made my personal life, a life worth living! Sierra is worthy of everything and I hope she sees how loved she is by so many people who are inspired by her AND her creative work! SIERRA… you ARE MORE than what your brain gives you credit for! You are never misunderstood in my eyes and I without a doubt know others feel the same! Thank you for reminding me and all who read, to appreciate the things that matter most in life, and to live every moment like it’s the last.

One of my favorite lines in the book is:
“I want Poetry to fill up teacups
Sipping on words
A meticulous collection
Shared only with those
Patient enough to understand
It’s true oasis”

You effortlessly introduced poetry so organically to me and for that I thank you too! I think you were named after the mountains because DAMNIT YOU MOVE MOUNTAINS! I love you sis! Don’t you ever forget that!

NOW GO READ HER BOOK DAMNIT!!

MY FRIEND WROTE A BOOK. And it’s such a good book, wow!

The preface immediately grabs your attention with the line, ‘This book is not for you if you can’t empathize with a young girl sobbing in a grocery store bathroom clutching a positive pregnancy test.’ From the start, Sierra is setting the tone for the raw vulnerability and emotional depth that will follow in this collection of poems.

This book is filled with beautiful, comforting words that can resonate with anyone - but especially young women - offering solace in knowing they are not alone in the hard times of life. Alongside the more intense, emotional pieces, are happy poems reflecting the diverse amount of love she’s filled her 20’s with. A collection that spans the highs and lows of being a young adult, it's sure to leave a lasting impact on those who read it. Sierra Smith, you are so brave and talented and I’m lucky to know you and have this book on my shelf forever!

I did dog-ear several pages that stood out to me, but I especially loved her poem “Casual” and these lines within it:
“Am I more desirable when diluted? … Just a glance is all he gave, and I’m already structuring the floorboards of an imaginary home… This idyllic love inside swells with a power ballad waiting to be sung. My voice is no match for its intended melody, I shall hum until someone notices it’s a song.”
