A few of my favorite recipes:
Blueberry Coffee Cake Scones - it has a streusel topping Cheese Scones - Cheddar and Parmesan cheese with a dash of red pepper. I served it with chili one night. Apple Oatmeal Scones - with apples, dates, oatmeal and molasses it's a hearty scone and a great on the go breakfast. Citrus Curd - I love lemon curd and this recipe takes it to another level with a bit of orange juice and peel.
The recipes call for you to place the scone batter on a buttered 8-9 circle on a cookie sheet, then cut the scones yourself, then bake, and if necessary re-cut. I also received a scone pan for Christmas and I would highly recommend it. The baking temperature and time does not change and the amount of batter is perfect for the pan.
My only gripe about this book is its size, about 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, and the binding; it's next to impossible to keep the page open face up. I like my cook books to be able to remain open for easy access. Other than that this is a fantastic little book.
For anyone who likes scones, this specialty cookbook is awesome. It not only includes a classic recipe, but 72 others. It's broken down into seven sections: Metrics and Conversions, Introduction: Ensconced in Scones, Sweet Scones, Savory Scones, Spreads, The Perfect Tea, and Index. I have tried around a dozen of the recipes and have always been pleased with the results. I make the classic and whole wheat scones the most, but have also enjoyed the blueberry crumbcake and carrot cake variations, too. The potato bacon scones work best as a side dish.
For what it's worth, this book was written to accommodate American measurements and ingredients. After several failed attempts to make scones, I wasn't successful at until I tried mixing the dough with bread beaters--not the ones used for cakes.
I hope other scone lovers appreciate this little 1988 cookbook as much as I have.
Proceed with caution. The recipes in this book have been known to make believers of the scone-agnostic. If you're already a fan, I suggest you invest in some elastic-waist trousers before cracking open this one. Blueberry? Cranberry-orange? Triple chocolate? Yes, yes, and yes.
This is a very small book, which makes it relatively difficult to keep open, thus why I rated four stars rather than five. But the recipes more than make up for the inconvenience. Each one that I have tried so far have been absolutely excellent.
The recipe for the classic cream scones with currants make the best scones ever!! Easy to follow recipes with many helpful tips -- only wish it had photos.
A variety of tea-time recipes to try. My favorites are the Apricot, White Chocolate, and Walnut scones and the Raspberry Filled Almond scones. Would make a nice gift.
