Samantha Jellicoe #2

Don't Look Down

Rate this book
The heat is on in Palm Beach-and Rick and Samantha are sizzling.

Samantha Jellicoe is no ordinary thief. At least, not anymore. She promised her significant other, British billionaire Rick Addison, that she'd retire from her life of crime. So no more midnight break-ins . . . no more scaling estate walls . . . no more dangling from the ceiling. From here on in, it's intimate dinners with Rick in posh Palm Beach followed by rock-your-world sex.

Who'd have thought that doing the right thing would turn out to be more deadly than her former life of crime? When the first client of her new security business is murdered, Sam is determined to find the killer. Now if only she can manage to stay out of jail, resist her former "associate's" lucrative job offers, and keep Rick from sticking his nose into her business, she might just manage to stay alive. Because trouble isn't just walking—it's running—to catch up with her.

Suzanne was born in Southern California sometime in the latter half of the 20th century. In the way that some people are born knowing they want to be astronauts or cellists, Suzanne always knew she wanted to be a writer. Early dreams of becoming a zoologist and writing true stories about her adventures in Africa were crushed, however, after she viewed a television special about the world’s most poisonous snakes; she did NOT want to write about how she’d been bitten and lost a limb to a cobra. Thankfully at the same time the movie “Star Wars” premiered, and she realized that she could make up adventures and write about them, and not be eaten by deadly predators while doing research.

She dabbled in romantic fantasy writing for a year or two after graduating with a degree in English from the University of California, Irvine, until her affection for traditional Regency romances led her to write one for fun. After several encouraging rejections from publishers, she snared the interest of the world’s best and most patient literary agent, who advised her to revise the manuscript. This ultimately led to the publication of her first book, The Black Duke’s Prize, from Avon Books in the Spring of 1995. A second Regency, Angel’s Devil, followed that Fall.

When Avon folded its traditional Regency line, Suzanne was encouraged to try her hand at historical romance. As she remained keenly interested in England’s Regency period, she decided to attempt another manuscript set in that time. Lady Rogue hit the shelves in March of 1997. She wrote a total of 29 books for Avon, including two anthologies and a five-part contemporary series which received a pair of starred reviews from Publishers Weekly. One of those books, Twice the Temptation, was named one of the five best romances of the year by PW in 2007.

In 2002 her well-known love of all things “Star Wars” led to an invitation to appear on the E! channel in the television special “Star Wars: The Force Is Back”, where she discussed the romance in the movie series and ended up with more air time than George Lucas.

In 2010 Suzanne left Avon Books for St. Martin’s Press, where she continues to pen historical romance novels. Her 31st book, Taming an Impossible Rogue, is set to arrive in March 2012.

Suzanne is known for her humorous characters, sexy bad boys, and whip-sharp, witty dialogue. She currently resides in Placentia, California with several hundred guppies and various other tropical fish, and handful of very loud, spinach-loving finches. And her collection of action figures and statues from “Star Wars”, “Lord of the Rings”, “X-Men”, and “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Everybody needs some inspiration, after all.

Our cat burglar, Samantha, is trying to give up her life of crime for the love of her life, Rick. He's a billionaire, so I guess it's okay if she wants to be a good guy, and I guess that he might be a good enough reason, but she's not exactly having an easy time of it. She is trying to start a security business because who knows better how to find weak spots in security system than the person who used to get around them? Still, she's not exactly used to be on this side of the law. When Rick is asking her about how it's going...

It’s the talking to the marks that makes me—”

“Clients,” he interrupted.

“What?”

“You said ‘marks.’ They’re your clients now.”

Apparently, Rick and Sam have some pretty steamy stuff going on that keeps her motivated to change her ways, and we get plenty of (mild) sex scenes. The weird thing that stands out, though, is that in every sex scene, although the author doesn't put much detail, she always manages to add in that Sam is doing something to his "flat man nipples". It seemed odd. Apparently, he loses his shit over this thing and I gotta tell ya... I'm not sure I'm buying it. Man nipples are generally just for show and have no useful properties, in case you didn't know. And, yeah, if you are hanging around them, I'm sure the dude likes it because he is hoping it's the first stop in a .... let's say downward line..., but I don't buy that man nips are as big a deal for them as this book makes them out to be.

So shiny...

Along with trying to set up her new, legit, business, Sam is trying to solve a murder. AND, Rick's ex wife is in town trying to get him back. This makes for some cat-fighting that actually leads to mud fighting cat fighting. It's a man's wet dream. That, and having his man nips touched.

When I find a series or author, I really like I tend to spread out reading them. I like to pick a time when I'm not going to have many distractions and dig in. I space the books every month or so and savor the experience. The Samantha Jellicoe Series is just what I'm talking about. It combines all the elements I value most in a book: true escapism; hot romance; mystery and above all - humor. I love it for the true entertainment these books give me.

Samantha Jellicoe, Sam, was a very successful thief until she robbed Richard Addison, a very hot billionaire, and was caught in more ways than in the act. They have been together for three months and their relationship has not been without its' bumpy times. Rick and Sam have agreed that she needs to give up her life of crime after almost dying on a job and the very real possibility that her past could catch up with her at any time. That is not an easy ask for Sam who really doesn't have a fallback career and absolutely will not be a kept woman.

In posh Palm Beach Sam works out what her second act will be, and she decides to try her hand at high end security systems. After all who better than a master thief to design a thief proof system. Her first potential client is a man with a lot on his mind and when he is robbed and killed after meeting with Sam, she is determined to find the killer. Rick wants her to let the police do their job, but Sam is sure she can find the killer faster.

Throw in Rick's ex, Patricia, and that Rick really doesn't want Sam to get involved in a murder and, well, how can she not especially when Rick makes a bet with her.

Way more fun than Eve and Roarke (and a Hero just as hot), these books are an absolute blast.

This one picks up three months after Flirting With Danger left off, and Sam and Rick are still striking sparks off each other and setting their sheets on fire. Sam is trying hard to stay on the straight and narrow and Rick is attempting to run his conglomerate while Sam is sleeping, it seems.

I absolutely love these two -- their banter is delicious:
"You're a good guy, Rick."
He smiled. "I keep telling you that."
Her smile joined his, her thoughtful green eyes studying his face. "Do you know what I want to do right now?"
Rick placed his cloth napkin across his lap. He should have asked for a less conspicuous table. "Tell me."
Samantha picked up a bread stick, examined it for a moment, then slowly licked the length of it. "Mm, salty goodness," she murmured.
"Christ. Cease and desist before I split my zipper."
"Oh, then I would have to sit on your lap in my short dress to protect your modesty. " She leaned forward, gazing at him serenely. "Comfortable?"

Have I said yet how much I love these books? The characters seemed like old friends by the time I was done the first book, and now re-visiting them in the second is like travelling home for Christmas. So much fun!

Because they are so engaging and the writing is so good I can overlook a couple of things about this book that chimed aloud as I read: the relationship between Rick and his ex and Sam at times defied belief, and sometimes Sam is just TOO stubborn about letting Rick know what she's up to.

Still, this series is fast becoming one of my all-time faves and I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a light, funny, sexy romp.

And because I really love Rick, I'm going to leave you with this:
"What's your horse's name?" she asked, tentatively patting the near shoulder or wither or whatever it was called.
"Middlebrook-on-Thames," he replied.
"What?"
"Tim, for short. He has a nasty long pedigree."
"Hence the stupid name."
Rick raised an eyebrow. "I have a nasty long pedigree."
"I know that, Richard William Addison, Viscount Halford, Marquis of Rawley."
He kissed her again. "You got it straight, Samantha Elizabeth Jellicoe of Palm Beach."

Sigh.

4 enthusiastic stars.

I can't deny staying up SUPER late reading this and the previous book, it was really addictively page-turning brain candy, although I'm a bit mad at myself for it, haha. I got a bit annoyed that WAY too many times the main character was enjoying riding around in a Bentley, because I get annoyed at glamorizing rich people and their stuff. I did thing the emotional depth was way better in this installment from the first, and I liked where the relationship was going (but can we drop the whole romance trope of an unearthly amazing guy basically dropping everything in his life INCLUDING HIS BILLIONAIRE BUSINESS to chase after a lady? Oh, and then she wants her "freedom" and he struggles with it but ends up giving her everything she wants and then some, including amazing sex all the time and sinewy muscles. Oh and Bentleys. UGH.) I will pick up the next one prolly down the line, because the chemistry between the characters is really good.

The mystery was well put together, and I liked the bitchy rich wife, and I'm definitely thinking people might really like these books if you like the lighter chick-lit-y mystery/urban fantasy-type stuff. It's just not normally my thing. In fact, I'm going to read a hard Sci-Fi book where people get blown up and don't drive Bentleys.

I enjoyed book 1 and moved immediately to book 2 which starts off with Sam following up on the start up of her new security business and Rick sticking his nose in. I admire Sam's determination to make her business on her own terms though it leads to a fight between them. She goes back to the US and he follows, they make up and Sam gets her first client who unfortunately ends up dead!

At this point I'm enjoying the book then Rick's ex pops back on the scene. See the murdering bastard of book 1 was none other than her husband and the man she had cheated with. Now poor Patty is struggling to move on with her life and wants Rick's help to get a divorce and set up her life in the US. Now this is where the book lost me. I've got a major problem with the reappearance of cheating exes. This is a me not the book problem and actually forced me to stop reading this one. Dear old Patricia stole a ring and after failing to entice Rick with her thievery she then attempts to set up Sam with the ring. Sam catches her and agrees to return it to the person she stole it from.

Dear old Patty even had her own pov here, now for me cheaters should get their comeuppance and never be heard from again. I don't care that the h/H may have moved on and don't have feelings for the ex anymore I just don't want to read about them!

If I can ascertain that Patty gets her just desserts later in this book I may continue but at this moment .....it's a DNF for me

Don't Look Down...but look for 5 stars:) Re-reading this series and loving it! It's awesome that a lighter read can have so much character depth and emotion. I love seeing how Sam and Rick grow in their relationship despite their pasts and the current pitfalls that they face. I love the personalities of both characters and enjoy the banter so much. On to the next:)

4 stars.

Rick and Sam's relationship is still at that tentative stage to make things interesting... The ex-wife just makes everything so much more awkward but not sure how Rick could have made such a mistake though.

I'm enjoying these contemporary mysteries by Enoch. Usually I'm pretty good at figuring out the culprit early on, but she's stumped me in the first two books. I'm not sure if that's because of superior mystery-writing skills or if I don't care enough about the mystery to put any brain power into it. I like the relationship between the leads and that seems to be enough.

I am skipping ahead to A Touch of Minx, because I read the blurb on Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and it didn't appeal. These books seem to be able to be read out of order. I guess I'll find out for certain.

I like Enoch's humor. She's talented with her characters, making them likable and engaging. I'm not prude, but I could use a little less cursing. It makes them sound stupid. But that's a pretty small complaint.

All in all, I give it four stars because it's engaging and unchallenging. Exactly what I need right now. :D

4.5/5.0

As the second in the Samantha Jellicoe series, this one is just as fast paced and fun as the first and I actually enjoyed the romance aspect even more. It was fun to have an already established relationship that is busy working out the "new couple" rough spots. That's a nice change and Enoch keeps it quick, hot and unpredictable. Sam does get a little annoying with her hard-nosed stubbornness but it is understandable considering the sheer strength of personality that comes with a driven billionaire for a boyfriend. One has to love Richard Addison, though, he is every woman's dream man! The way he gives Sam 100% of his unconditional love and support is what makes this series so wonderfully addictive.

For anyone who loves a great who-done-it mystery with lightening fast repartee, and lots of romance and excitement, this series can't be beat!

"The steam factor is still high, although toned down a little from the first book*

[this is a series review, identical to my review of the first book.]

Okay, these Samantha Jellicoe books are my new cozy fun yummy reads that I RAVISH. I've read the first two, and I'm saving the rest for when I really really need something wonderful and reliable. I think there are only FOUR! SOB. Samatha is a cat burgler, she meets her hero robbing his art collection, and just, wow, this series is insanely delightful.

This has the same wonderfulness factor of those early Evanovich/Stephanie Plum books for me, but a step up in maturity and relationship.

This might sound morbid, but I have half a mind to save the last two for my deathbed. It would be something to look forward to. But then, what if I die in a car accident?

I wish I knew why strong heroines have to be portrayed as arrogant, selfish & generally unlikeable - particularly by American romance writers. It isn't necessary for a strong woman to be "sassy" or "feisty" or a smartarse or however you'd like to describe "unmannerly". I made allowances with the first book but I really didn't like Sam much at all in this one. She comes across as pert, snippy & mulish, with no manners at all. This book was just OK, not as good as Flirting with Danger which was much more amusing. I will try the 3rd book Billionaires Prefer Blondes.

this series is fun so far but i feel the characters lack true depth and i don't feel invested in them. the fast-paced, engaging plot almost makes up for it, though.

I didn't get into Book 2 of the Samantha Jellicoe series as much as I did the first--but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it, because I did. This book's set three months after the first, and changes have come into our cat burglar heroine's life; she's not only got a real, blossoming relationship with billionaire Rick Addison now, she's even trying to go straight. Instead of robbing people blind, she's now trying to advise them on their security.

It's a great plan on paper, but it just goes to figure that one of Sam's very first clients is murdered shortly after hiring her. Nor does it help matters much that Rick's ex-wife arrives on the scene, ostensibly to integrate herself into Florida society--but as far as Sam's concerned, clearly trying to integrate herself right back into Rick's life, and Sam just can't have that, now can she? Toss in complications with Sam's former fence being a suspect in the murder of her client, and all in all, it's a tasty little mystery.

The main reason it didn't work quite as well for me as the first one, I think, lies with how there's a bit more emphasis on the whole OHNOEZ EX-WIFE plot than I would have liked, vs. the OHNOEZ Sam is Trying to Go Straight But Her Past is Complicating Things plot, which was quite a bit more interesting. However, I've got to give Enoch credit for avoiding getting too cliched with the ex-wife, and for keeping Sam and Rick's developing relationship lively. I'll be proceeding on to book 3! Three stars.

Honestly I don't know how she does it! I have always connected Suzanne Enoch with historical romances, but she completely threw my presumption out of the window with this contemporary romance series! Believe me when I say this, she can write!!
Wow!
I love Samantha. Her sense of freedom, her high spirited nature, her loyalty all of it is so intriguing. I can't get over it! As for Rick he is great. But honestly most of the time I am so involved in enjoying Sam's personality that I can't find enough time to appreciate Rick. This book was specially great because I felt the last one left a very gaping ending. This book sought out to fill those gaps. Sam's change, her relationship with Rick was developed very nicely. And by throwing in some action and adventure, I felt like it was another Dan Brown book!! Murders and Mysteries and all that...

Love this series!!
Fingers crossed for the next one.

Samantha and Rick's story continues and the two are struggling to find some balance in their relationship and make their very different backgrounds and lives work together.

Samantha is a bit childish and I found myself annoyed with her at times, as well as with the relationship drama that she causes, but Rick makes up for her and doesn't let her get away with it.

A robbery and murder investigation, an ex back in town causing trouble and the relationship drama all make this book an interesting one, but I'm hoping that Sam will be finally past some of her issues in the next book, Billionaires Prefer Blondes.

consigliato!

I quite enjoyed this book, and found it difficult to put down. It picked up right where the first book left off, which I worked out once I had recalled where that was. The story picked up quickly after a literal bang, building up to a delicious climax. I am still reminded slightly of Eve and Roarke where reading this, but the relationship between the main characters is extremely different. There wasn't much of a resolution, just enough to sort out the major storyline. I can't wait to read the next book.

Great fun and I am really enjoying these quick reads. The attraction between Sam and Rick is steamy and though I am concerned that he likes the rush, I still love them together. Sam is trying to go straight to not embarrass or hurt Rick, but she's struggling against her instincts and Stoney's tempting.

Sam is forcing Stoney to go straight with her. When a potential client approaches Sam and is killed overnight, Sam's sense of justice is inflamed and she decides to uncover the killer.

Rick's ex-wife, Patricia Addison-Wallis, shows up and her intentions seem to be to either win Rick back or at least break them up. I lost much respect for Rick to not see through Patricia's manipulations.

Likes:
* Samantha "Sam Smith" Jellicoe, cat burglar extraordinaire
* Richard "Rick" Addison, gorgeous, eligible, divorced billionaire
* Smoking attraction between Sam and Rick
* Nicknames, Brit & Yank
* Sam's reluctant ally, Detective Frank Castillo
* Sam saving Rick Addison's life in Flirting With Danger
* Sam's moral code not to kill or steal from museums

Dislikes:
* Tom "Harvard" Donner, Rick's friend and Yale lawyer who openly distrusts Sam
* Beautiful but deceitful Patricia Addison-Wallis

With-reservations:
murder, language, stealing, bondage, breaking and entering, setup, sexual situations & innuendos, drugs, cheating

Palm Beach, Florida, and also in New York City: high-end, luxurious environments filled with mansions, galleries, and the glittering social scenes of the wealthy.

Samantha (Sam) Jellicoe – A former cat burglar turned security expert. Clever, daring, and independent, she’s trying to live a straight life while being pulled back into the thrill (and danger) of her old habits. She breaks into a house, to return a ring Richard's ex-wife stole... and she got such a thrill (+ the security tape that shows her stealing it)... She is invested to start her business by herself!!

Richard Addison – A wealthy British businessman and art collector. He’s charming, protective, and hopelessly drawn to Sam - he wants to help her business, in great part because he wants her to be successful, and have less of a chance to leave him. He tells her he loves her, and mostly accepts that she isn't ready to say it back to him...He's trying hard...

Stoney – Samantha’s old associate from her cat-burglar days. He’s street-smart, loyal, and often provides the criminal know-how Sam needs when her legitimate work crosses over into gray areas. He is taking over setting up the office - switching her desk daily, looking for the best fit.. etc.

Detective Rick Reynolds – A local cop who doesn’t fully trust Sam but appreciates her skills and connections when it comes to solving art-related crimes.

Jeremy Carr: Samantha's first potential client.. but he is murdered before she is hired. He is wealthy, a businessman, with 2 grown children...

Elizabeth Carr: ambitious, has own real estate building, but it isn't doing as well as it seems... she is eager to take over dad's business.

David Carr: son, ne'r-do-well, paid by company, but does not go into work; he plays big and has a coke addiction... he sets up Stoney with an expensive painting of his dad's & the murder weapon.

Samantha and Richard are working hard to define boundaries... while the pull between them is awesomely strong...

After reading Book 1 in this series a few days ago, I couldn't wait to delve into Book 2. The Samantha Jellicoe series is the perfect summer beach read. Light, fun and hot! Once again, I couldn't put it down.

Samantha is going straight. Well, actually she is 'trying' to go straight. But for some reason, it just isn't as easy to do that as Rick would have liked. After her first 'almost' client is murdered, Samantha finds herself head over heals in another murder investigation. Add in an ex-wife who is trying to worm her way back into Rick's life, a former fence trying to go straight along with Sam and yet keeps coming up with unexplained furniture and decor for their new office, a business associate of Rick's who is being blackmailed with suggestive photo's, a hot guy who also happens to be the son of the murdered victim and boyfriend of Rick's ex-wife Patricia all the while he is hitting on Samantha, and you have another great adventure of mayhem and mystery.

Yes, I am loving this series! This one wasn't quite as good as Book 1, but it was still a very good read.

I can practically hear people screaming “why haven’t you read this before now”. The answer is I avoid series with the same characters like the plague because I hate a couple being torn apart then thrown back together and on and on. This was a pleasant surprise however and it more felt like a strengthening and a continuation.

Sam is a reforming art thief and in a relationship with one of her former marks- billionaire Rick Addison. She’s putting down roots for the first time in her life and trying to walk the straight and narrow by opening up a private security business when her first client is murdered. Sam of course needs to know what happened, so just add amateur sleuth to her resume.

I loved the strengthening of the bond between Sam and Rick, and how Rick tries to keep himself in check which is nice for an alpha hero. I loved not only their journey but the mystery plot line as well and I won’t hesitate with continuing the series.

It was an entertaining page turning read. This would have made a great TV series. I gave this 4 stars.
