‘মাদার টেরিজা' নামটি উচ্চারণ করলেইএকটি ছবি চোখের সামনে ভেসে ওঠে ক্ষুদ্রকায়, অশক্ত চেহারার এক নারী, পরনে সাদা শাড়ি, কলকাতার বস্তিতে, লন্ডনের কার্ডবোর্ডের ঘরে, নিউ ইয়র্কের গেটো'তে, ভ্যাটিক্যানের ছায়ায় যে-সব দরিদ্র লোকের বাস, তাঁদের প্রেম ও করুণা দান করছেন। তাঁর অসাধারণ কাজের স্বীকৃতিস্বরূপ সারা পৃথিবী জানিয়েছে শ্রদ্ধা ও সম্মান, ভূষিত করেছে সর্বোচ্চ পুরস্কারে। নোবেল পুরস্কার থেকে আরম্ভ করে রানি এলিজাবেথ প্রদত্ত 'অডার অব মেরিট পর্যন্ত ! এসবই তিনি গ্রহণ করেছেন দরিদ্রদের নামে, যাঁদের তিনি ও তাঁর ‘মিশনারিজ অব চ্যারিটি' প্রাণ ঢেলে সেবা। করেন। “আমি ঈশ্বরের হাতের একটি পেনসিল ছাড়া আর কিছুই নই,” তিনি বারেবারে বলেন, “এ সব কাজ তাঁরই।”
প্রথম যখন তিনি কাজে নামেন, তাঁর সম্বল বলতে কিছুই ছিল না, ঠিক কীভাবে কাজে এগোবেন সে-বিষয়ে ছিল না কোনও পূর্বনির্দিষ্ট ধারণাও। ছিল শুধু তাঁর প্রগাঢ় ধর্মবিশ্বাস। তাই নিয়ে তিনি এক বিশাল সঙ্ঘ গড়ে তুলেছেন। একশোর বেশি দেশে তাঁরা ছড়িয়ে পড়েছেন। যারা দুঃস্থ, অনাথ, প্রতিবন্ধী, যারা কুষ্ঠরোগাক্রান্ত এবং যারা মৃত্যুপথযাত্রী, তাদের জন্যে প্রতিষ্ঠা করে চলেছেন একের পর এক আশ্রয়স্থল। তাঁর মূল কাজ কিন্তু এখনও বস্তিতে-বস্তিতে, রাস্তার ধুলোয়।
নবীন চাওলা গভীর সংবেদনশীলতা এবং স্বচ্ছ দৃষ্টি নিয়ে মাদার টেরিজার কাহিনী বিবৃত করেছেন। অনেক বছর ধরে তিনি তাঁকে চেনেন, তাঁর দুর্লভ সব কাগজ ও চিঠিপত্র তিনি দেখতে পেয়েছেন, অনেকবার কথা বলেছেন তাঁর সঙ্গে ও তাঁর বন্ধু এবং সাহায্যকারীদের সঙ্গে।

About the author

Navin Chawla was an Indian civil servant and writer, who served as 16th Chief Election Commissioner of India. Four phases (out of five) of the Indian general election to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, were executed under his supervision in April and May 2009.
Chawla is best known for his biography of Mother Teresa and for conducting the 2009 general elections, despite concerns about his leanings towards the Congress Party. Action was taken against alleged malpractice by Congress governments in Rajasthan, Assam and Andhra Pradesh and the Congress-Allied government in Tamil Nadu. According to his family, Chawla was deeply influenced by Mother Teresa and decided not to resign from the civil service in 1997 in accordance with her advice.

(Throwback review) Navin Chawla's book about Mother Theresa is one of my favorite books of all time. This is a review I wrote for a magazine which I am sharing with you here.

Missionaries of charity,54A, JC Bose Road, Kolkata, is the address synonymous with the everlasting source of love. Every human being whose heart has a touch of humanity must have come across this address at least once in their lifetime. These are all because of a person named Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, known as Blessed Mother Theresa later who was born on 26 August 1910 in Skopje, Yugoslavia, destined to serve all people of the world from India.

She was an old, lean, wrinkle faced lady who led an austere life with eyes that were always shining and had extraordinary grasping power. She was pragmatic to the core with a heart that was a never-ending source of love. Even though some people initially rebuked her activities as arcane and enigmatic, seeing her philanthropic nature, they understood that they misconstrued her and soon became her followers. She spoke very little, but each and every word she spoke had immense power to motivate others to love, share, and care. There was nothing obscure in her activities, even for ordinary people, because it was based on the sole principle of love. When someone once asked her how she can wipe out the decaying wound of leprosy patients, she replied that "In each and every person I take care of I am seeing my god and taking care of him is the best thing a person can do in this world." She was a ray of hope to the destitute people in their amorphous life.

She self abnegated herself of all the worldly desires and worked continuously for the abject. She used to sleep only 3 to 4 hours per day. When once she was advised to sleep at least 6 hours a day, she replied, "After my death, I have got a lot of time for that. Now I have a lot of duty to fulfill which I shouldn't postpone". She was that much ardent and assiduous.

The amount of confidence she used to instill in the patients she had taken care of was immense. She used to tell those who are in abysmal despair that,

"God is sharing his pain with you only because he loves you. He loves you deeply and wants to make you strong. So accept it and be happy about that. Then your life won't be miserable."

Her power to mollify others was immense. She believed that to understand poor people, she had to live a life poorer than them. She considered her poverty as her independence and not her misery and power. Abatement of poverty of the abject was one of her goals for which she selected India as her forte.

She got several awards that commensurate her services, including the Bharat Ratna and the Nobel Prize for peace. She was the first person to receive Padmasree and Bharat Ratna, who was born outside India. She unabashedly told the Nobel Prize organizers to cancel the Grand dinner, which was given to all the guests after the prize distribution regularly so that the money for the Grand dinner could also be used to provide food and care to poor people. Being moved by her vastness of mind not only did they aberrate from the party and cancelled the dinner but also almost whole of Europe had donated money (even the young kids gave their full pocket money) which was a considerable amount which she had used for the leprosy patients and the poor.

She always wanted concord in this world and she worked immensely for it. If there was a war or natural disaster, she usually was the first person to reach there with a helping hand. She considered others life as more valuable than her's.

She died on 5 September 1997. She and the missionaries of charity begot by her prove that one person can change the world during his or her lifetime and after that. So as a compendium, I can say that she not only was a benefactor to millions but also her life is an excellent textbook for every human being, especially those who are related to serving others like those in Medical Profession. We should learn each and every aspect of her life and try to emulate it in our life.

Navin Chawla did an amazing job in portraying Mother Theresa's life. This is a book that has the potential to change your life.

MT loves the church and she loves god, but she only loves the poor as proxies for Jesus. MT said that without her suffering for god, all the work she did was JUST social work. She provided inadequate medical care, she took large amounts of money from unsavory donors, and she secretly did unrequested death bed baptisms to increase her body/soul count for jesus. The more I read about her, the more I find that she is no Mother Teresa.

Very rarely do you come across personalities who dedicated their lives for selfless service on the scale as Mother Teresa. What the book does so beautifully is to portray her persona so vividly. This could have only been done by someone who knew her well and took the trouble to know her. Various instance narrated in the book are touching. They create an indelible impression on the mind of the reader. Eminent personalities and institutions have honoured and described Mother Teresa but the one provided by the President of Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan describes her the best: "She is one of those rare souls who has transcended all barriers of race, religion, creed and nation. She aspires for no kingdom, no honour, not even salvation or moksha. She is true vaishnavjan- minstrel of God- wholly dedicated to the removal of peeda parayi (the pain of others) in the manner of Mahatama Gandhi". Indeed, the Mahatama would have fully endorsed these views for an unparalleled crusader.
The book has been written by a bureaucrat who, inspired by Mother Teresa wanted to quit his job and join her in the service of the poor. Her response is a lesson to all the bureaucrats, indeed anyone, as she chided the author saying that " you must always work for the poor and the good of all people. You must continue to touch the poor". Once again the Mahatama would have fully endorsed this as well.
The book is extremely well researched and brings forth certain unknown aspects of Mother Teresa, including her personal life before she came to be recognized by the world. Ironically, she was given Bharat Ratna in India only after she was conferred the Nobel Peace Prize......a clear case of "Yog" being recognized when it became "Yoga".
A book worth reading and re-reading..........for all who feel for the poor and even for those that don't.

I read this book years ago - it came into my life at a time I needed it - I enjoyed the book and was humbled by all that she gave - with that said there is a part of me that is sad that she gave up so much and that after her death her writings detailed how detached she felt from God - this was depressing to me on many levels - I do think anyone with a brain questions - but I do not believe God is about scarcity but is about abundance - for someone to give all of themselves and have so little joy - heartbreaking - she also wrote that she believed when she died she would continue to feel distanced from Jesus - I am not sure I believe in the whole father, son and holy ghost trinity - but I like to think that Ms. Mother Theresa was welcomed with open arms and is dancing and joyful where ever she rests

It is a remarkable life that Mother Teresa led. I like the book but I feel it is lacking some substance. So much more angles of Teresa’s thinking and doing could have been considered. There are also inconsistencies that annoy me; e.g. in the first chapter it says that Teresa was born in 1910 and that her father died in 1917, so when she was seven, while half a page later it says that Teresa was 12 living with her parents when she first thought about becoming a nun. We need to know the truth.

Mother Teresa by Navin Chawla is a biography of the beloved Mother Teresa. Have you ever wondered how someone can so caring for other people? In this book it expresses why Mother Teresa decided to do what she care about the most, helping the people in need.

This biography explain how many things she has done for the people in need. Starting with nothing but faith she began to do many things for these people, setting up institutions for the destitute, the handicapped, orphans, the leprosy-affected and the dying. She does all of this while still existing in the dirty streets and slums. Due to her faith and hard working wet, she is well know throughout the world because of the things that she had done for the people in need that no one else was willing to do.

I've found that it is very easy for me to connect to this book, because Mother Teresa is my main influence when it comes to helping other people. This would be a great novel for anyone. It's good for research, or for anyone who is interested in ministry or simply just helping people out. The biography will give you all the question that you have about her.

Wow! I have read other reviews that remark a Christian should have written her biography. Navin is a Hindu, but refers to himself as "near atheist". Who better to write a biography than one who is sceptical? He writes of the facts, which include miracles that occur everyday. Mother Teresa herself tells him about these miracles, "if you pray, you will see them". He writes facts which no one can dispute. Main point, God can use anyone to accomplish His will.

A biography written by one of her friends (though not a confidant), who had both love and awe for this saint during her lifetime. His perspective as a Hindu gave an interesting view of her life and work through an unexpected lens. A good biography that I didn't want to put down, I only wish it had covered her period of doubt for so much of her ministry.

মাদার টেরিজাকে আমরা চিনি মানব জাতির জন্য ঈশ্বরের এক দূত হিসেবে। যে তাঁর সারা জীবন বিলিয়ে দিয়েছেন মানুষের সেবায়।
মাদার টেরিজার ‘মাদার টেরিজা’ হয়ে উঠার রাস্তা মসৃণ ছিল না। শুরুতেই তাকে চার্চের সামনে প্রশ্নবিদ্ধ হয়ে দাঁড়াতে হয়েছিল, করতে হয়েছিল জবাবদিহিতা।

অ্যাগনিস (মাদার টেরিজা) এর জন্ম ১৯১০ সালের ২৬ আগস্ট, ইউগোস্লাভিয়াতে যা আলবেনিয়া রাজ্যে। ছোট বেলায় তাঁর বাবা মারা যান এবং মা সংসারের হাল ধরেন। বালিকা অ্যাগনিস তাঁর পড়াশোনা চালিয়ে যান চার্চের আওতায় এবং ১২ বছর বয়সে তিনি নান হওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নেন। যদিও তাঁর মা আপত্তি জানান, তবুও তিনি ছিলেন দৃঢ়প্রতিজ্ঞ।
অ্যাগনিস যে চার্চে পড়াশোনা করতেন, সেই চার্চের ফাদার সেখানে একটি ভগ্নীসংঘের শাখা খুললেন, নাম the sodality of the blessed virgin. এই সংঘ অ্যাগনিস জীবনে সুদূরপ্রসারী প্রভাব ফেলে। এই শাখার থেকেই অ্যাগনিস জানতে পারেন যে বঙ্গদেশে ‘নান’ দের একটি সংঘ আছে যারা কাজ করে শিক্ষার প্রসারে। অ্যাগনিস এই সংঘ দ্বারা এতই প্রভাবিত হন যে, ১৮ বছর বয়সে তিনি ঈশ্বরের বাণী শুনতে পেলেন – ‘পরিবার ছেড়ে এসো, প্রিয়জন ছেড়ে এসো, মিশনারি হও।‘ অবশেষে ১৯২৮ সালে তিনি পরিবার ত্যাগ করেন, প্রথমে আয়ারল্যান্ড যান এবং সেখান থেকে আসেন কলকাতা।
কলকাতা আসার পর তাকে পাঠানো হয় দার্জিলিং এর নভিশিয়েট এ, সন্ন্যাস জীবনের প্রস্তুতির জন্য। সেখান থেকে ফিরে ১৯৩১ সালে অ্যাগনিস শপথ নিলেন সিস্টার হিসেবে। দারিদ্র, ব্রহ্মচর্য আর বাধ্যতার শপথ। নতুন জীবনে প্রবেশ করে নিয়মানুযায়ী তিনি ত্যাগ করলেন ‘অ্যাগনিস’ নাম আর গ্রহণ করলেন নতুন নাম টেরিজা।
এর পর সিস্টার হিসেবে তাঁর যাত্রা শুরু হলেও ১৯৪৬ সালে তিনি আবারও ঈশ্বরের আদেশ পান। তিনি লরেটো থেকে বের হয়ে কাজ করার আদেশ পান। এরপর শুরু হয় তাঁর সবচেয়ে কঠিন কাজ, তা হচ্ছে চার্চের নিয়মকানুন মেনে চার্চের একজন নান থেকেও চার্চের বাইরে কাজ করতে চাওয়ার জন্য অনুমতি পাওয়া। এমনটা আগে কখনো হয় নি।
এরপর চার্চের অনুমতি নিতে চলে গিয়েছে ২ বছর, ১৯৪৮ সালে চার্চ তাকে অনুমতি দিলেও জুড়ে দিয়েছিল কিছু শর্ত। সেইসব মেনে মাদার টেরিজা চার্চ থেকে বের হয়ে এলেন।

১৯৪৮ সালের ১৭ আগস্ট মাদার টেরিজা নানের পোশাক ছেড়ে পরলেন ফাদার ভ্যান একসেমের আশীর্বাদ পূত একটি শাড়ি। নীল পাড়ের সাদা শাড়ি আর একটি ক্রুশ চিহ্ন ও জপমালা নিয়ে বেরিয়ে এলেন বাঙালি মাদার টেরিজা। তাঁকে দেখা গেলো কলকাতার মোতিঝিল বস্তিতে। শুরু হল মাদার টেরিজার পথচলা…

আমাদের পরিচিত মাদার টেরিজার জার্নি এখান থেকে শুরু হয়। তাঁর প্রতিষ্ঠিত বিভিন্ন সঙ্গ, সেবা কেন্দ্রের প্রতিষ্ঠার গল্প ফুটে এসেছে একে একে। এগুলো এখানে বিস্তারিত না বললেও চলবে…

‘মাদার টেরিজা’ বইয়ের লেখক নবীন চাওলা ছিলেন ভারত সরকারের উচ্চপদস্থ এক অফিসার। তিনি দীর্ঘদিন মাদার টেরিজার সাথে তাঁর সেবা কেন্দ্র ঘুরেছেন, সফর সঙ্গী হয়েছেন মাদার টেরিজার। সেইসব সময়ে তিনি মাদার টেরিজার কথা বলেছেন নানান বিষয়ে। বই লেখার আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করলে মাদার টেরিজা অনুমতি দেন এবং বিভিন্ন নথিপত্র আর ব্যক্তিগত চিঠিপত্র দেখার সুযোগ করে দেন। এর ৫বছর পর প্রকাশ পায় এই গ্রন্থ।

নিজস্ব কিছু মতামত:
মাদার টেরিজাকে নিয়ে আমাদের যে আবেগ, ভালোবাসা শ্রদ্ধা আছে তার সাথে তাকে ঘিরে কিছু সমালোচনাও আছে। বিশেষ করে ধর্ম পরিবর্তন করানোর যে বিষয়টা। কিন্তু এই বইয়ের তথ্য প্রমাণ আর অনেক মৃত ব্যক্তির সৎকারের বিষয় লক্ষ্য করলে দেখা যাই সেটা মিথ্যা।
মাদার টেরিজা সব সময় বলতেন ঈশ্বরের কাছে প্রার্থনা করতে। এটা দ্বারা ভুল বোঝার একটা সুযোগ হতে পারে। কারণ ‘ঈশ্বর’ শব্দটা মূলত খ্রিস্টান ধর্মের জন্যই আমাদের অঞ্চলে ব্যবহৃত হয়। এই বিষয়ে তাকে প্রশ্ন করা হলে তিনি বলেন, ‘আমি দীক্ষা দিই। আমি হিন্দুকে আরও ভাল হিন্দু হতে শেখাই, ক্যাথলিক, মুসলমান, জৈন, বৌদ্ধ, প্রত্যেককেই শেখাই নিজের নিজের ধর্মবিশ্বাস অনুযায়ী আরও ধার্মিক হতে।'

আবার বলা হয়, মাদার টেরিজা রোগীদের ডাক্তারি চিকিৎসা দিতেন না। কিন্তু দেখা যাচ্ছে চ্যারিটি অফ মিশনারির নিজস্ব ডাক্তার ছিল, এমনকি অনেকে এই সিস্টার বা ব্রাদার হিসেবে শপথ নিতে আসলেও তাদের পাঠান হয় ডাক্তারি পড়ার জন্য, যাতে করে তারা পায় সংঘের নিজস্ব ডাক্তার। ভ্রাম্যমাণ অ্যাম্বুলেন্সে করে বিভিন্ন ডাক্তারকে আমরা রোগী দেখতে যেতেও দেখি। আবার ডিসপেনসারি নিয়ে বেশ কিছু কাহিনিও আছে । তাই ডাক্তারি সেবা না দেওয়ার বিষয় আসলে কতটুকু সত্য তা প্রশ্ন বিদ্ধ।

সবশেষে মনে রাখা উচিত, কেউ সমালোচনার ঊর্ধ্বে না, এমনকি মাদার টেরিজাও না। আর তাঁর প্রতিষ্ঠিত সংঘ একটি ধর্মীয় সংঘ যা ধর্ম-বর্ণ নির্বিশেষে সবাইকে সেবা দেয় এবং কাজ করে চার্চের আওতাভুক্ত হিসেবে। তাই তাদের কার্যক্রম তাদের নিজস্ব ধর্মীয় রিতিতে হবে সেটাই স্বাভাবিক।

আর মানুষের অসহায়ত্ব, দরিদ্রতার কাছে ঈশ্বর নিজেও হার মানে। তাই ঈশ্বরের নাম ভাঙ্গিয়ে যদি দরিদ্র দুঃস্থ মানুষ সেবা পায়, তো পাক। আমি এতে সমস্যা দেখি না।

I'm glad that this is the book that I chose to read in order to learn about mother Teresa. It was well-written by someone who worked closely with her and was able to see her in action. I believe that she was truly a godly woman, and I aspire to be more like her in my actions, my thoughts, and my devotion. She truly gave her whole life, her whole self in order to serve the poorest of the the poor, and in them, she recognized the face of God.

There are a lot of things that I personally disagree with that mother Teresa holds sacred. Some of the things are her devotion to religion, anti abortion and no business sense. But I must admit and commend her love for humanity which has inspired me to try and contribute to humanity. Whatever insignificant contribution that my life can have on this world, I will ensure that is for the better off this world.
I loved of she didn't force her beliefs on others and said I want them to be a better hindu, muslaman, christian or any other. She celebrated the potential for goodness in people and used it to ameliorate the suffering of the poorest of the poor.

A definitive biography of Mother Teresa. I'm reading this one in a book club with a few friends. She is an intriguing character, certainly admirable and compelling. I am sometimes confused with what seems a fascination with suffering, but I am perhaps misreading her. I certainly will not presume to judge her! I am taking away some good lessons about serving those around me as a gift of love to Jesus, even if those around me are not always lovable.

This was a detailed autobiography of the humble Yugoslavian girl who became the beloved Mother Theresa, the patron saint of the poor of India. While well-written, it is the saintly woman's struggles and love for mankind that holds the reader's interest. A close friend wrote this biography and there are many intimate and private looks into the life and heart of this servant. After reading this book, one will treasure this godly nun who was a selfless servant of those with less than nothing.

Read this before my trip to Calcutta. Finished the book in one day, and looked up to see that it was the same day as the anniversary of her death. If there are other heroes in the world, they must look upwards at Ma T. Visited and volunteered at Motherhouse and Home for the Dying. If you aren't religious, you may give it some thought after being at either of these places.

Reading about all Mother Teresa has done, makes me want to do better at finding ways to help the poor, sick, handicapped, etc. She saw a need and found ways to make it possible to help.

Fascinating Woman, this book is interesting. It gave me a humbling perspective on life and a desire to be more charitable.
