I live in the teeny, tiny town of Taylor, NY, (Alliteration Alert!) though my mailing address is Cincinnatus, my telephone exchange is Truxton and I pay taxes and vote in Cuyler. All of these are at least in the same rural county in the southern hills of New York State; Cortland County. There are more cattle than people here. The nearest “big” cities are Syracuse and Binghamton and they are an hour away, in different directions, and not really all that big by most standards, though they both seem humongous to me. I look out my window to see rolling, green, thickly forested hills, wildflower laden meadows and wide open blue, blue skies. My road is barely paved. The nearest neighboring place is a 700 acre dairy farm.

My house is a big, century old farmhouse. I moved in here after my divorce in 2006. Just a little over a year later, the house, which I had named, SERENITY, burned. It was 99% gutted, and I lost my two dogs, Sally, an 11-year-old great Dane, and Wrinkles, my 14-year-old, blind bulldog. This was the culmination of my Dark Night of the soul, which had seemed to hit me all at once in 2006-2007. My mother died that year, after a 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was only 60. The youngest of my five daughters had left home that same year, and while that’s not a tragedy at all, it felt like one to me. Then came the divorce. And finally there was the fire--it seemed my darkest night wasn’t quite finished with me after all. I had lost almost everything before that point, and as I poked through the wet ashes and soot the next day, I realized that I had now been stripped all the way to the bone.

No better time to start over. (And no, I didn’t come to that realization that day--there were a few days of wallowing in pity first, particularly the day after the fire, when I hit a deer and smashed up my car, which I was practically living in!)

That’s when I started to laugh. Just sat on the side of the road as the deer bounded, uninjured and carefree, out of sight, and laughed. It was just too ridiculous at that point, to do anything else!

And from there, I picked myself up, and brushed myself off, and said, okay, there’s only one way to go from here. Forward. And that’s what I did. There I was at the age of harrurmphemmph, living in my one, mostly undamaged remaining room, with a dorm-sized mini-fridge, a futon, a TV, my cat (nine lives!) and a laptop. And not much else. (Though thank goodness the room that survived the fire, was a room that had its own attached bathroom!)

Since then I have rebuilt my beloved home, which really has become my haven, my “Serenity.” I share it now with my fiancé, Lance, and we have accumulated quite the little family together. “Little” being a relative term. We have a pair of English Mastiffs, Dozer and Daisy, who weigh 203 pounds and 208 pounds respectively, and a little pudgy English Bulldog named Niblet, who is bigger than both of them, inside her mind. We also have the aforementioned cat, Glorificus (“Glory” for short,) who adores her canine pups and keeps them firmly in line. And we've acquired a pair of stray cats as well, a mother and son, Luna (Lulu for short) and Butters aka Buddy. Lulu showed up pregnant during a lunar eclipse, had a litter, and vanished again. We found homes for all the kittens except one. Butters. We got him fixed and kept him. A few months later, Lulu returned, again expecting. This litter was born on the "Monster Moon." Again, all the kittens were spayed and neutered and placed in homes, and this time we got Lulu to the vet in time to spay her before the cycle could repeat.

Glory is not amused.

She has a story of her own, my old Glory cat, having been with me before the Dark Times descended, she went through it all with me, moved with me, survived the fire, and remains with me still. She's tolerating the newcomers. Barely.

My partner is an artist, a mechanic, a welder and an inventor, and the rumors are true, he is much younger than I

In 1959, Edge being the oldest and most experienced of the Gang of Five serves as a surrogate farther to his four fledglings. The youngest returns home to tell them how she drank blood from some stud that peed in his pants before she took his Rolex and wallet. Edge leaves to locate one of his children who failed to return home. When he comes back alone, he finds his four vampire children dead and the watch missing. Edge vows to kill Frank Stiles, the man who peed in his pants.
Forty years later Edge still hunts down Frank though he previously killed this hated human. He learns that Frank comes back to life due to something involving the "Child of Promise" that Frank once held prisoner. Edge believes that this "Child", the only known half human and half vampire in existence can lead him to Frank. When the legendary "child" Amber Lily travels to assist a human friend dying from cancer, she runs into Edge. As they become acquainted they fall in love though she knows he is using her. Neither understands that their agendas match, as she needs Frank who used his experiments on her to learn how to cheat death.

EDGE OF TWILIGHT is an engaging vampire romance starring two exceptional protagonists. The support cast is a delight as each one wants to keep Amber safe in a cocoon and none including the heroine trusts Edge. Though the timeline seems inexplicable as to why Edge failed to kill Frank in the first three decades plus after the fledgling murders occurred and before he kidnapped Amber, fans will appreciate this engrossing supernatural romantic suspense.

Actual Rating 3.5

These book are very similar in style to the Black Dagger Brotherhood (but without the same punch). Each book surrounds a vampire couple (in this one it was Amber and Edge). The cast from the previous books all make appearances so you also continue with past storylines. It is a formula that is done so well (and so frequently) now, but this books gets brownie points from me as it was one of the pioneers of the genre (this was book 10 and it was written in 2004....well before the twilight and paranormal romance explosion).

It was a fun, light read with a lot of escapism (which was what I was looking for). Easy to read. In places it was really silly and corny, but that comes with the territory. This book is probably up there as one of the better books in the series and I will definitely keep reading to see where Shayne takes the storyline now that the author has exhausted all the vampires in her initial family tree.

I had a good time reading this story. My first experience with Maggie Shayne's work was Born in Twilight, and I have to admit that I wasn't sure how I'd handle seeing Amber in a romantic role because of that. But this book actually does feel like a good follow up to the earlier story, while also blending in the characters and themes used in the books that took place during Amber's childhood. And Edge was an entertaining character throughout.

That said, I also couldn't keep myself from composing this haiku during some of the middle chapters:

"The 'peroxide' blond
Brings to mind Joss Whedon's Spike
Don't be distracted."

I'm going through a tall stack of misc. books. This one was up next.

There may have been an earlier book in the series but this was the first one I came across. It was not good. Everyone is too perfect, even if they are vampires. Everyone is all warm and familial even if they are vampires. The bad guys are bad. No one is really interesting.

I hope I don't find the rest of the series in my stack.

My book is fiction and it’s about supernatural powers. The name of the book is “Edge of Twilight” by Maggie Shayne. The book is challenging to read because of the vocabulary that is being used in the book. The author of this book is popular because she already wrote several books. There is girl named Amber lily in the books and she is half human and half vampire. There is a also boy named Edge and he is vampire who came to seek revenge from the Stiles who has killed his family. He needs help from Amber Lily to kill him because he tries several times to kill but he always able to save his life. Edge wants to know the reason behind this. Since both Amber and Edge was trying to find the Stiles. They should join hands but can’t because their motives are different. Amber wants to keep alive because she wants to find the reason why he can’t die. So, she can save willem. Stiles kidnapped Amber six years ago and did the random tested on her to get her blood and blood is the reason behind his survival. So, she needs the formula to save willem. Would she be able to find the Stiles before Edge kill him? The main Protagonist of this book is Edge and Antagonist is Stiles. The thing that makes them interesting is that they both have supernatural powers and they are against each other. So, it would be interesting to find how will Edge overcome Stiles evil powers? The book really about good and evil and how evil has to die at the end. This book is set in the past and in the fantasy world. I did enjoy this book and I want other people to read because it has message which is that the evil can be really powerful but not more than goodness. I think teenagers would love this book because there is action, romance and fantasy involved in this book.

This book was "okay". I can't say it was as good as some of the others in this series, but there isn't a whole lot bad I can say about it, except that it was lacking in romance. The story itself was exciting as Amber Lily and Edge, the happy couple, race against time to find Stiles who holds cure for Willem Stone, who has developed brain cancer. They fall in love along the way, and what little romance there was between them was good, there wasn't enough of it. Their love story was lost in the subplots, one of which I found incredibly annoying: Amber Lily's pregnancy.

It's impossible not to notice that the entire subplot of Amber Lily's impossible pregnancy was clearly lifted from the Twilight series, including the rapid development of the fetus. I wasn't particularly fond of it in the original source, and less so in this. In fact, I feel it was handled even less creatively, and detracted from the love story although it was apparently supposed to enhance it. Perhaps it's that I don't find children to be particularly romantic.

I was glad to see Sarafina and Willem finally get a more satisfying ending, or should I say continuation, to their romance, but it would have been more satisfying if this had happened in Embrace the Twilight. As a subplot in this novel, it only served to further overshadow Amber Lily and Edge's romance, and was rather anticlimactic.

Overall, Edge of Twilight was a fair addition to the Wings of the Night series, which is worth reading for those who love the genre. If you loved Twilight, you'll probably enjoy it.

Angelica and Jameson’s daughter, (the only half vampire/half human), the Child of Promise, Amber Lily is now 23 years old. Willem (human ex-soldier, married to vampire/gypsy Sarafina, saved Amber Lily) is dying of a brain tumor – with less than 6 months to live – Sarafina is devastated – as are all the rest… and Amber Lily has been having dreams of a gorgeous man, who gives her a gift in carved box , and she is horrified when she looks inside. And then she sees that it is an infant that is dead in the box…

Amber thinks she can save Willem if she can locate Stiles (the DPI man who had kidnapped and tested on her 6 years earlier – whom they believe found some sort of super strength from her blood as he survived a fall)… so that they can get his formula and give it to Willem to heal him…

And then they introduce Edge (aka Edgar Poe) a 50 year old, rogue, stand alone vampire, a street thug who showed honor in his battles, who due to circumstances, was abandoned by his sire when he was created – so he had to figure his way on his own… He had gathered together a small family of ‘street’ vampires, including a teen, and they worked together to survive… the teen overstep her boundaries and when taking blood, she meanly frightened the man… and when Edge was out looking for one of the gang, the man (Stiles) located the rest of his family with the DPI, and they executed them… Eric finds them just before daylight, and can tell that it was Stiles who did it, and he vows vengeance…

Forty years later he has killed Stiles twice, but he has healed both times… now Edge believes he must connect with the Child of Promise to draw Stiles out and find out what it is about her that Stiles needs that keeps him alive, so that he can kill him…

So on the night that Amber is heading to Salem, to Willem & Sarafina, Edge orchestrates it so that she hits him with her car… And here begins a strange courtship, where both must finally face that they have fallen in love – something both had sworn never to do… he is cynical, deceitful, wants nothing to do with her ‘family, and warns her away…. She knows he is hiding/shielding information from her, she keeps trying to puzzle him out… and they are attracted to one another… and after a couple of nights, they have powerful sex…

Edge gets it her whereabouts out on the internet with the intention of getting Stiles to Salem – though he plans to intercept him first… Amber is mad at him, and just as he is about to snag Stiles, she shows up – using her powers they capture Stiles, though Edge is hurt… she takes them an hour out of Salem, drugs & ties up Stiles, and then offers her blood to Edge.. he takes it reluctantly – and their connection becomes incredibly stronger – and they are overcome and must have sex, and he feels the presence of a growing life in her – and is angry that she lied about being a virgin (vampire men are sterile)…

And she buries him under hay to keep him out of the sun, and she enacts her own plan to try and gain the information Stiles has – changing the sedatives in his doctor bag to water… and allowing Stiles to capture her… He takes her to Boston, takes her blood – he has plans to harvest her eggs and creatre clones so that he has an unlimited supply of her blood – he only has one vial left of his formula…She is very weak – she is alternatively nauseous and then ravenous… and Stiles tells her that she is pregnant – she doesn’t believe him…
And Edge wakes up after her capture, and there is a voice in his head that is telling him where to find her… they go and rescue her, and she finally believes she is pregnant when her mother senses the life in her…

And the bottom line is she is pregnant with twins… her blood has healing agents, and apparently interacted with Edge’s sperm to get pregnant… the boy twin is telepathically communicating with Edge – the father, and is controlling/making changes in Amber’s blood chemistry… Stiles determines that her blood is very unpredictable – advancing cell growth, retarding growth, etc… and he gives himself an injection, and he is aging fast – beyond his chronological years…Amber also finds that her blood will heal – she accidently drips some on an injured Edge, and it heals his burns – and then she uses it on a human, and a cut is healed…

And the babies (though they only know of the one) are growing fast – she goes into labor within 2 weeks of conception… the last vial of Stiles blood helps Willem… she delivers the baby boy – he is healthy… and then she unexpectedly delivers a baby girl – who isn’t breathing… they put her in a dresser drawer/makeshift crib… and their son telepathically tells his dad to bring his sister to him… and Edge lies him next to his sister, and he reflexively grabs onto the babies’ finger, and she is brought to life… so her dream was true, and yet a moment later is untrue as there is a miracle… and they finally confess their love for one another…

Babies’ 2nd birthday – they are all gathered… Amber’s blood is back to normal and they are able to give Willem what he needs to defeat the cancer – and even heal his limp… and Willem and twin boy (JW – James William) are at the beach, where the boy is picking up starfish, healing them, and throwing them back into the water… and the twin girl (Bridget after one of Edge’s gang) is dancing gypsy style with Sarafina around a fire… and Amber & Edge sneak off to the stretch of beach where they first made love…
Amber’s human sister – Alicia – may be in a future story – I don’t think she has the bella antigen, but she is practicing her witch crafts, drawing on her own natural power…

A surprisingly enjoyable read. I picked this up on one of those communal library shelves at work and ended up enjoying it. It didn't feel all that vampiric to be honest - possibly because I'm more used to the vampires dredged up by Anne Rice - but I enjoyed the characters to be honest and was impressed by how the story tied up.

I barely remembered most of this story from when I read this when it first came out. I remember being a little disappointed because I loved the Wings in the Night Series. I enjoyed it more the second time I think because I didn't have as high expectations. It was an interesting story. But it did seem to drag in places.

I really enjoyed this book. I bought this book in a used book store. I’m really happy that I bought it and learned about this author. The book was fun and with a strong female character. The part that was not as realistic (as far as there can be realism with paranormal books) was the quick pregnancy

Carino, in definitiva.

I loved Edge as a character, and the initial conflict setup between Amber and Edge was interesting. Unfortunately, it gets solved with a deus ex machi-baby, and the happily ever after didn't feel earned at all.

When the heroine is told the man responsible for rescuing her from the lab where she was being experimented on for her immortality is dying, she is devastated and immediately gets in the car to drive to him. But, on the way, she hits a man with her car and upon determining the damage she's down to him, she comes face to face with the man who's haunted her dreams for many years. For as long as she can remember she's see his face in her dreams and she knows that he will bring death. So with that prediction in her mind she should be afraid of him and though he is visually frightening, she is not afraid.

The hero is on a mission and he's ruthless enough to do anything needed to see his family is avenged. So he's planning to use the heroine as bait to attract the attention of the man responsible and the first step in earning her trust. While he's flirty and generally easy going, the hero doesn't count himself as a 'good person'. He doesn't play well with others and the notion of being a hero doesn't really sit well with him. He knows that they know, he's up to something but still this distrust doesn't stop the heroine from sleeping with him. See, the line is being to be blurred between what he's suppose to fake and what's actually coming from the heart. So when the plan works and the heroine is kidnapped, he is enraged and desperate to get her back...especially now that he knows she's pregnant. The heroine finds herself once again a prisoner of the man who took her hostage all those years ago but this time she's stronger and more battle smart. Still, the notion of being pregnant is ludacris because she's only slept with the hero and being a vampire, he can't get her pregnant. Still, it soon becomes obvious she is with child and with that knowledge comes the horrifying vision of the hero presenting her a dead baby. Breaking her out of the house, the hero is trying to come to terms with the idea of the heroine carrying another mans child while being sick with jealousy...until she tells him it's him. The idea fills him with such elation that he realizes he's willing to do anything to save the life of his son and to become the man the heroine needs.

What this book lacked in we'll call substance, it made up for in characterization. I really enjoyed the bad ass, doesn't play nice with others hero who at heart is actually a very good man. He's had a hard life, being turned by a man who abandoned him and later finding his own fledging's slaughtered. It's no wonder he's focused on revenge. And the heroine learns that down the road and so she begins to understand him a bit more. Still, though she's displeased with him at he should use her as bait, the fact of the matter is, nothing he could do or say could ever make her stop loving him. She sees the man inside who can be so tender and sweet and motivational to think positive and change the future so that they can be a family. She was a good character as well, an immortal but not a vampire, her blood is magic and heals instantly and obviously allows her to carry a child. She was focused on saving the man she considers a second father as well as the child and never thought about herself. Together they were a good pairing. There was a disconnect though and it stopped me from completely engrossing myself in the story. Perhaps it was the fact that the plot was dragged out but I kept flicking my eyes up to the top to see what page # I was on. Not a good sign in a novel cause that means I was wondering when it would be over. Still....decent book. Nothing special.

Morte. Chiunque lui sia, le porterà la morte. O forse la sedurrà per l'eternità
Ottavo volume della serie Wings of the night.

We continue the story of Amber Lily in book 10 of Wings in the Night. After the evens in book 8, her life has changed drastically. She has learned to be more independent and more dependent at the same time. She understands that she is something new and different. And while some will view that as something to be cherished and protected, others (like DPI) view it as a new subject to tear apart and figure out.

We also get to meet Edge - a young vampire (all things considered) that is set to find the last remaining DPI agent and make sure he dies a horrible death. That's all well and good, but Amber Lily has her own reasons for hunting the man down, and she needs him alive.

They have quite an interesting romance, but I didn't feel as if that was the highlight of the book. More and more new and different things are discovered (I really wish I could say more - but I would give way too much away). The main focus of the story didn't seem to be so much about the romance at times, but about continuing the storyline of the vampires I've come to love reading about. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of very romantic scenes and it definitely should be considered a paranormal romance, but there was just too much else going on at the same time. Some of the more hardcore romance readers may not get into this as much as I did.

There seems to be some very fun and exciting things to come for our little group. There's a short story at the end of this one to set the hooks for book #11 - and it sounds very exciting. We got to meet a "young" Rhiannon in it and it solidified her as one of my favorites - the pet panther helps a bit too.

What happens when the daughter of two vampires finally grows up? Love.

Jaded hearts ... broken spirits ... a PLAUSIBLE vampire pregnancy (i.e. not Breaking Dawn 's craptacular version of it - which almost reads like Stephenie Meyer read this and then went to work on her own novel). Where S. Meyer's dropped the ball, this series and this book run with it and score!

The only thing that I didn't like was that I couldn't picture Edge/Edgar in my mind at all. I can't remember if he wasn't described well enough or if my mind didn't want to hold on to the description but it didn't seem right. I appreciate books where I can picture the characters better.

Otherwise ... fantastic!

I enjoyed my first foray into Maggie Shayne's Twilight series. The story is quick, entertaining, a good way to wile away a few hours.

Edge, who seems almost a Spike clone, is an embittered vampire seeking revenge against the one who wronged his 'family'. In comes Amber Lily as his tool to exact his revenge. Only problem, he finds himself falling for her.

Sure, as in many Romance novels, the other characters are poorly developed -- and in this case, it really didn't matter. Spending too much time developing those characters would not have moved the story forward.

The key elements to move the story were developed primarily in Amber Lily. She began to learn and understand a little more about herself, a being quite different from her family and friends. Not quite vampire, not quite human, with powers yet to be discovered.
