Ed Lentz takes readers on a photographic journey of the Arch city through history from National Road to capital city. From the enigmatic Moundbuilders who left their mark in the heart of the Buckeye State to the National Road and Ohio Canal that drew an influx of settlers to the burgeoning capital, Columbus blossomed into an industrial hub that became the world's largest producer of buggies. The Arch City--with its illuminated streetcar arches curving gracefully through downtown--struggled through social and political unrest to thrive on its economic success and grow into a diversified capital city.
Very rare is the city in America whose mere existence is almost done by design; however, Columbus, Ohio a city I've now called home for the last 9 years is one of them. Created as mostly a compromise capital city that was also out of a flood plain, the city that would be designed as Ohio's capital has a unique history that at times this reader was not that familiar with. Ed Lentz with "Columbus: The Story of a City" does fill in some of those gaps & also gets the story of the city up to the start of the 21st century & I wish at times this book would get an update since this city's history has significantly changed since it was first published. Still though, this is a book that anyone with an interest in history of Columbus will enjoy.
A history of my hometown that includes some background on the prehistory of the area as well. I wish this were mandatory reading in CPS civics classes.
Very interesting read on the history of Columbus from my City and Regional Planning Course: The History of Cities. I learned a lot of fun facts about the history of the city I live in and love.
