I really enjoyed reading about these artists. I was somewhat familiar with Mary Cassatt and Leonora Carrington, but I had never learned about Betye Saar and Mark Frank. Their biographies were fascinating, especially Betye Saar's. Their artworks leaped off the page with beauty, horror, tragedy, compassion, hope, fury, and love. It made me want to run out and see these women's works in person.
One star deducted for the final line of Betye Saar's biography which felt like an unnecessary universalization of her work and a reduction of the power and importance of her work as a black artist.
