A rhythmic jazzy story in verse, Jazz Cats tells about the escapades of some real cool New Orleans cats that know how to entertain. From the blow of the clarinet and trumpet to the pluck of the fiddle bass and beating the trash can drums, these Dixie, dancin', jazz cats know how to have fun.

I read this book about 18 years ago for a music education class. So, it was time for a re-read. Of course, it is a picture book for very young children, but it’s pictures are gorgeous. The book is also a good introduction to the jargon of jazz musicians with very clever rhymes.

In it, cats of all varieties are anthropomorphized as jazz musicians of all varieties. They are specifically New Orleans jazz musicians. The illustrations beautifully depict such NOLA landmarks as Jackson Square, Bourbon Street, and Café du Monde. The poetry is full of jazz syncopations. The pictures are extremely colorful, accentuating the greens, purples, and golds of Mardi Gras.
