Wednesday League #4

The Missing Heir

Rate this book
HE'D RETURNED FROM THE DEAD TO COME FACE-TO-FACE WITH AN ANGEL.

Indeed, to Adam Hawthorne's eyes, Grace Forbush possessed an ethereal beauty, all the more intriguing when draped with the air of mystery she wore like an elegant evening wrap. But were the ton's whispers true? Could this heavenly creature who stirred him like no other have done murder most foul?

The buckskin-clad savage in Grace Forbush's library wasn't all he seemed. Shockingly, he was more, for Adam Hawthorne was an English gentleman --- and her late husband's true heir, come to claim what was rightfully his: her hearth, her home ... and her heart!

This book is no 2 in a series - the other books are "The Rake's Revenge" and "The Courtesan's Courtship", I have read them out of order which you can but I wish I had read them in order.

This one is about Grace Forbush and Adam Hawthorne. Grace was married to Adam's uncle who has now died. Grace and her husband had been told that Adam had been killed in Canada.

Adam has come back to find the traitor who ordered his killing and massacre of the Indian village that he was living in.

Grace is part of The Wednesday League, a group of ladies who help women in distress, especially due to be unfairly treated by their men folk.

It introduces Lord Geoffrey Morgan to us.

It was a good read.

This has some competently written elements of a romance but the heroine is made to look ridiculous as a crusader saving unfortunate females in Regency England, head of "The Wednesday League" of like-minded damsels. A young woman appeals to the group to save her from marriage to a card sharp who won her hand when her brother lost his wager.

Accordingly Grace, who's a widow with an unhappy marriage behind her formulates the most idiotic plan. She who has no idea how to play cards will start haunting gambling houses, observe and learn to play a few variations, then challenge the prospective bridegroom and divine whether he is a cheater as some rumors have it, in which case the wager is null and void. She must near bankrupt herself to lure him in as he plays for high stakes and eventually after running out of money and jewelry, she agrees to wager herself on one deciding hand as substitute for the unwilling bride who has turned out to be rather whiny and unpleasant. Meanwhile, Grace has conveniently fallen in love with "the missing heir" to her late husband's fortune but will risk her own happiness for the ungrateful chit who's a stranger to her.

Luckily, the card sharp is a pleasant sort, feels he owes the heir a debt and does cheat...to give Grace the win. Presumably he's meant to be the hero of the next story in the series. Pray the Wednesday Club disbands or finds some brains.

A somewhat insipid Regency-set romance. This one is packed with a cast of uninteresting, unlikable characters and hilarious anachronisms – the idea of a female “Justice League” fighting crime in Regency London is in itself ridiculous and makes a mockery of the work from the start. As does the hero, who comes into the book – and London – dressed as a Red Indian!

Worst of all, though, the romance is absurd, the chemistry between the leads amounting to nothing. The first time they share a kiss, it comes out of nowhere, and then is quickly forgotten – a real joke compared to the kind of passion and care found in other Historical Romances. A nice effort to do something different, but not my cup of tea at all.

Possibly my first Harlequin Romance that I grabbed one night at my SIL's when I was staying over and didn't have anything to read. I was suprised how much I actually got into the story. Not a deep read by any means but kept me guessing.

It is beyond me why such wonderful characters have been given the most far-fetched story? I truly liked all of them, but the tie that bound them was not worthy. This is the second book of the 'Wednesday League' series. I am going to give the next one a try. I hoping for better!
