Top Ten Reasons Why Manual For Living Is a Great Book!
1. It reminds us that "The present moment is all that exists, and is the only moment that ever will." (p. 63)
2. An important truth that we're only just beginning to realize "How long will it take for us to realize that we are merely stewards of this beautiful world in which we live?" (p. 89)
3. Living a life without drama! "Life without drama is simplicity...However, in simplicity, we find all that we require in life." (p. 93)
4. Blaming God for our mistakes is just wrong. "We cannot blame a higher power for the choices we make that create the situation in which we find ourselves." (p. 105)
5. Are we living the life we've been given? "What matters most is the quality of our life; the life we live in the time we have been allotted." (p. 156)
6. The past v. the present. "Don't we realize that we need to let go of the past in order to move into the present?" (p. 157)
7. Keeping up with the Jones'. "We use others as the benchmark for a balanced and healthy lifestyle, and by looking outside of ourselves, we will always find what we are lacking in our own life." p.190
Think positively about yourself.... ask God who made you to keep on remaking you. Norman Vincent Peale
8. How can we be happy? "True happiness is fulfillment from the inside out." (p. 196)
9. Again, is it right to be stuck on what's happening with the Jones'? "We all seem to have the answers for everyone else's life but rarely for our own." (p. 211)
10. Giving. "We can serve others without taking on their pain. We can give to others without absorbing their suffering. We cannot carry another's burden just as we cannot live another's life." (p. 240)
I hope you were able to tell with just those few glimpses the greatness of this book. It is a beautiful testament to life and living. A book to help one reach his greatest potential and grasp his dreams.
I pride myself on being amazingly in love with life and working at always seeing the spirituality in everything around me, but I've definitely struggled with some of the bigger questions in life, like a fear of death and discovering my true purpose. I've been sober almost 20 years - which is almost half of my lifetime, and even truly living a 12-step philosophy, answers to those struggles have eluded me. And this struggle only gets worse when someone I love dies, which is what happened last year -- my brave, wonderful dad passed away, leaving me baffled and lost.
I met Seth Chernoff at an author's event in New York City last month, and he sent me a copy of his book, "Manual For Living: Reality." I think I knew from the first two minutes of talking to Seth that something was shifting. I won't spoil or limit the impact of this book by being too specific, but I will say that I'm not as lost or baffled. My dad was a hero to me (and to a lot of people). He truly lived his life to the fullest -- I'm profoundly grateful to Seth Chernoff and his book for helping me to figure out how to do that too. There's no better legacy for my dad than to learn to love life and live it as fully as he did, and I feel like I finally have the missing piece to making that happen.
"We must simply release our agendas, our pains, our concerns, and our worries in order to appreciate fully what is available to us in every moment. We must release our agenda in order to truly appreciate the opportunity presented before us in the moment, for only then will we realize that even the manifestations of a lifetime net exactly zero. All we have and all we are is what we share from within each moment. We take nothing with us but our soul's history and leave nothing behind but memories." ~ Seth David Chernoff (Manual For Living - Reality)
I am headed towards a better me, but I can only get there through edification and unification, so I am reading. I am a cheap reader so I am downloaded and reading everything that is free and helpful. I also have a goal of 100 books this year, so I am making it happen. I ran scross this little gem and could not wait to turn the virtual pages.
"Transformation in life requires an ongoing commitment to growth and greatness."
Happiness can be momentary, but true and sustainable happiness requires fulfillment of our being, of our soul. We all seem to have the answers for everyone else’s life, but rarely for our own. We tread through our lives believing that we never have enough, where we are is not where we should be, and who we are is not good enough. Everything that happens to us happens within us. When life is most difficult, our need to trust is foremost. It may take time, but in due course, we will discover and understand the meaning in all things.
It is worth a read.
