For a long time I thought that Patrick O'Brian has killed the genre of historical fiction, especially everything that has to do with the navy. I'm happy to report that this is not the case, and that John Biggins' books, especially the one under review, fall nothing short in terms of quality, and are unique and fascinating in style. The characters are non-trivial and multi-dimensional, the plot is captivating, the research is meticulous and multi-faceted, in short, the book is everything I came to expect from a great historical fiction, with the one great benefit on top of O'Brian - that is, that the author is alive and kicking, and hence, I have the future books to expect and then to enjoy.
