Roy Dennis

He has worked in conservation, rare species recording and species reintroductions, as well as directing projects fro the RSPB and other organisations. As a broadcaster and educator, he has made documentaries and been a regular presenter on the BBC's Autumnwatch and Springwatch, as well as other programmes.
After school he spent time at bird observatories on the islands of Lundy and Fair Isle where he met and worked with ornithologist George Waterston, who attempted to reintroduce the white-tailed eagle to Britain in the 1960s.
Dennis has worked in the Highlands and islands of Scotland since 1959, and has been involved in reintroducing white-tailed eagles, red kites and beavers there. He ran projects re-establishing the goldeneye as a breeding species and restoring the osprey population in Strathspey, where he worked as the RSPB's Highland officer, and oversaw the management of nature reserves including Loch Garten. He also undertook research on grey seals on North Rona with John Morton Boyd. In the 1960s, he organised the collection of peregrine falcon chicks from nests in the Highlands as a contribution to the re-establishment of the species in eastern Germany.
In 1990, Dennis left the RSPB to start his own wildlife consultancy and pursue his interest in species reintroductions. Between 2000 and 2017 he was involved in projects to extend the range of the red squirrel in the Highlands. The Highland Foundation for Wildlife was renamed the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation in 2017.
Dennis received an MBE in 1992 for services to nature conservation and an OBE in 2024 for services to wildlife.

Incostante e incompiuto
Mi aspettavo molto da questo romanzo. Mi aspettavo un'intima descrizione della quotidianità femminile, limpidezza di scrittura e armonia di intreccio.
Purtroppo questa storia di quattro amiche (una delle quali fra l'altro non è nemmeno un'amica, ma un'intrusa) non raggiunge lo scopo. Un po' confusionario nella sua coralità, il romanzo parte in sordina per poi acquistare velocità grazie ai misteri di cui l'autrice costella la vita delle nostre eroine.
Il ritmo di lettura aumenta per la tensione di sapere, di scoprire. E se tutti i nodi vengono al pettine, il nodo più grosso si risolve a mio parere in modo grossolano, troncando la storia senza tante spiegazioni, con un bel "chi vivrà vedrà".
Mah! Deludente.

Another book from the Irish short stories compilation. Good story, intriguing ending, but ultimately a book for 40 something women. I'm just not there yet. I found I couldn't relate to the characters very well, with their marriage and children trials and tribulations. It's sad, I've grown out of the 20 something chick lit, but there doesn't seem to be anything between that and the 40 something wife and mother stories. The four women have incredible bonds, but I guess I am looking for more of a SATC vibe. I think I'll wait a decade or so before cracking another Dunne novel.

Eravamo quattro amiche al bar ma certo non volevamo cambiare il mondo. Questa � stata la prima impressione leggendo il libro che scorre via veloce, perch� naturalmente le vicende si accavallano e a tutti piace guardare un po' dal buco della serratura le vite altrui. Cos� si assiste al solito clich� delle amiche -non amiche, un po' invidiose, poco casalinghe, forse, ma certo anche disperate. Diverte, fa trascorrere il tempo ma lascia davvero poco

Libro che fatica ad ingranare, ma una volta dentro la storia si riesce a proseguire bene. Alcune parti le ho trovate ripetitive ed inutilmente prolisse; alcune emozioni, soprattutto trattandosi di una narrazione tutta al femminile, sarebbero potute essere descritte in modo più dettagliato e profondo. Tuttavia, la storia è carina e per la prima volta non mi ha infastidito il continuo cambio di punto di vista nella narrazione. Certo, per chi come me è eccessivamente curioso, risulta snervante la lettura in alcuni punti: vengono lasciate in sospeso alcune vicende, che trovano spiegazione solo molte pagine più avanti. Tre stelline, perché mi aspettavo sensazioni ed emozioni più definite, ma è un libro che si legge bene.
Quella sera sapevo già senza saperlo che era qualcuno di cui avrei avuto bisogno sempre, che non avrei mai voluto lasciarlo andare via.
Come fai a sapere che cos'è normale, se la normalità non l'hai mai conosciuta?
Ci sono cose che una volta rotte non si possono aggiustare, inutile provarci.
La fiducia che puoi riporre in una persona non dipende da quanto tempo la conosci.
E' triste che due persone, che avrebbero potuto rendersi felici a vicenda, abbiano invece fatto di tutto per allontanarsi.
La rabbia portava lacrime e litigi, promesse, sesso e riconciliazioni. La rabbia è per tanti versi sorella dell'amore.
Forse quando si abbandona una vita per un'altra, si devono rivisitare tutte le cose che hanno avuto importanza in quella passata prima di poterle lasciar andare.
Quella sera sapevo già senza saperlo che era qualcuno di cui avrei avuto bisogno sempre, che non avrei mai voluto lasciarlo andare via.

Dunne's prose is very readable and functional. The story is light, but well enough constructed. The majority of the characters are believeable. However, much keeps me from rating it higher:
1. The four first-person narrators had voices that sounded less similar. As it was, a third-person narrative would have been more effective.
2. There were less telling and a lot more showing.
2.a. If something that was told in one chapter was not immediately shown in the next chapter. Georgie mentions something that happened to Nora. Nora then shows us how that happened in the next chapter. Nora mentions something about Maggie. Maggie shows us how to happened in the next chapter. After the first occurrence, there are no surprises, nothing left to wonder: everything will always be shown.
2.b. The minor twists better displayed throughout. Maggie tells/shows the reader how she had found out something horrid about Claire before Claire told the reader/Maggie about it, but that should have coloured all of Maggie's recollections in earlier chapters -- and Claire's. But it does not.
3. The final big twist was telegraphed early on and took for-painful-ever to play out. How wily the author must have felt!

The story started really slowly and I didn't mind putting it aside for weeks. It only got interesting when Nora's narrative started. That was the only part I could relate to. But still, that was predictable too. I'm a bit fed up with cliches: if you can't tell it in a way that's original, please don't bother!
There was nothing new in the book: adoption, abortion, friendships, betrayal - this has all been said. And the very end of the book, Georgie hitting it off with Robbie, duh. I was really angry.
It is a three-star book, though, because the writing is good and it has potential, but I'm giving my copy away, not worth the space on the shelf.

La prima cosa che ho apprezzato in questo libro è la diversità di punti di vista per la stessa vicenda ossia le quattro voci narranti. Mi è piaciuto molto questo modo di raccontare l'amicizia al femminile e la diversità delle protagoniste permette di riconoscersi nell'una o nell'altra. Non è però la Dunne de La metà di niente: forse rimane troppo in superficie e la conclusione della storia è un po' forzata

I really enjoyed the storytelling of Catherine Dunne. This was a straightforward read which examines the relationships between four friends across the years and how their experiences, both shared and otherwise, shape their lives. However, whilst Georgie, Maggie, Claire and Nora seem like a tight-knit group (with the exception maybe of Nora, who is always a little of an outlier), there are secrets that are kept despite their closeness and the book is about whether you ever really know someone as well as you think you do.
I like books that examine character and Dunne does this especially well. The narrative switches between perspectives and so, we have four different voices within the book.
The novel begins with a prologue where one of the friends is leaving and is reflecting on how her friends will react on her disappearance as she is meant to be meeting up with them.
Once this has been established, we then focus on the lives of the girls. The point at which Dunne chooses to start is with Claire and when she first meets Maggie and Georgie at university and becomes their flatmate. Georgie and Maggie have known each other for years, since childhood, and it feels, at first, that the story will contain tension between Maggie and Claire contending for Georgie's affections but that's not central at all.
The girls are very different, Claire being a little more naïve than Georgie and Maggie at first but we see how their dynamic is established and how the addition of Nora changes that too, especially with regard to Georgie's disregard for her. Nora is Georgie's antithesis - bulky plainness to Georgie's grace - but it is Nora who has the best marriage, an endorsement to assure plain girls everywhere that there is a good man for you, if you only enter a shoe shop in Dublin and have nice ankles! Trite but true in Nora's case.
And so, the book takes us from wild university days to marriage to career to kids and beyond, showing ups and downs, betrayals and solidarity until the epilogue at the end where the biggest secret of all is revealed and tied back to the prologue. Shocking although the clues are laid in the text if you are prepared to spot them.
A good, easy read, fluid with good character building and believable action.

Lamentosa e lagnosa storia di 4 amiche (o pseudo tali, visto che si tengono segreti i segreti più intuibili!) raccontata con piglio d’aria fritta in salsa di banalità (l’ho letta perché di solito Dunne scrive meglio, e poi è ambientata a Dublino, e io non so resistere a qualcosa ambientato a Dublino). Ci sono queste 4 ragazze, che nell'idea dell’autrice dovrebbero rappresentare – presumo, altrimenti non si spiega – i 4 archetipi femminili: Georgie, non bella ma grintosa (l’Antipatica Affascinante), Claire, rossa mozzafiato con propensione per i maschi sbagliati (la Bellissima Sfortunata), Maggie, minibella con propensione per un maschio sbagliato (la Brunetta Procace), Nora, goffa, noiosa e prevedibile (il Tafano, come la chiamano le altre tre).
L’amicizia nasce ai tempi dell’università, con tre di loro (cioè tutte tranne il Tafano) che abitano insieme e condividono sbronze (bevono tutti più di Hemingway, stanno sempre con un bicchiere o una bottiglia in mano e, dalla mia esperienza, è abbastanza vero), feste, serate, etc.
Si innamorano tutte e 4 con alterna fortuna e tre di loro avranno uno strepitoso successo professionale (solo una non penserà alla carriera e l’amore la ripagherà ampiamente: indovina quale?).
Il libro alterna capitoli scritti in prima persona dalle 4 tipe, così come nella vita si alternano a cucinare le cene mensili che costituiscono un appuntamento fisso. Peccato che lo stile dei capitoli non rispecchi quello delle diverse abilità gastronomiche, ma sia un unico ininterrotto monocorde lagnoso elenco di lamenti lai compianti lamentele etc.
All’inizio, e qua e là tra i capitoli, ce ne è una che cova un incredibile segreto (che più o meno si capisce a metà libro, come tutti gli altri incredibili segreti, peraltro) la cui sgradevolezza narrativa (non ci sta, non è credibile, non è plausibile, non è narrativamente accettabile) e improbabilità umana è tutto tranne che un coup de théatre.
Forse Dunne doveva farsi la piscina riscaldata e ha pensato di guadagnare due euri con questo pastone.

Questa volta Catherine Dunne mi ha un po' delusa.
La storia di queste quattro amiche non mi ha detto molto, somiglia tanto ad altri libri simili che ho letto.
C'è il cliché della serata in cui, a distanza di anni, le amiche si ritrovano per festeggiare il loro immutato rapporto, ma poi si accorgono che invece qualcosa è mutato nel corso degli anni, che ci sono dei segreti che si sono taciute.
I capitoli alternano le voci delle quattro protagoniste, in modo che il lettore venga progressivamente a conoscenza della loro storia.
La narrazione è un po' confusionaria, spesso nel mezzo della narrazione di un episodio ne viene inserito un altro che sposta l'attenzione, per poi riprendere il racconto. Non mi è piaciuta questa scelta stilistica che fa perdere continuità alla lettura.
Apprezzabile, ma la Dunne sa fare molto meglio.

Un libro carino, ma senza grosse pretese. E' la prima volta che leggo quest'autrice e sono rimasta piacevolmente colpita dallo stile narrativo, mentre la storia sa di già letto. L'amicizia di queste quattro donne si basa su segreti, parole non dette e condivisione del vissuto quotidiano. Quando le prime crepe iniziano ad essere visibili, ognuna segue la propria strada, lasciando indietro le altre per sempre o per qualche anno. Le protagoniste si vogliono bene, si lasciano, si riprendono, crescono. Non è un romanzo sull'amicizia a mio avviso, ma piuttosto un romanzo corale a 4 voci sulla vita e sul diventare l'adulto che si è sempre sperato.

Tre stelle perché mi ha ben intrattenuta ma mi aspettavo altro. Tanto per cominciare dovrebbe essere la storia di quattro “amiche”, una delle quali però è una mezza imbucata che piace poco alle altre, ma io ho una concezione diversa della parola “amicizia”. Per carità, in ogni relazione amicale ognuna porta dentro di sé aspetti privati della propria vita che tende a non confessare ma in questo romanzo direi che è un po’ troppo, sono un po’ troppo grossi e importanti i segreti che vengono svelati. Specie l’ultimo, che onestamente mi ha lasciato parecchio amaro in bocca.

I presupposti sembravano buoni. Quella che poteva essere una storia sull’amicizia femminile (trattando anche la vita universitaria, solitamente poco gettonata) si rivela essere l’ennesima narrazione dai colpi di scena improbabili e completamente scollegati dai suoi personaggi. Sembra che nemmeno all’interno dell’universo delle persone normali e delle “piccole vite” i personaggi siano degni di attenzione se non possiedono colpi di scena estremamente drammatici. Peccato, c’erano davvero le basi per un bel racconto e dei ritratti femminili diversi dal solito.

Il mondo al femminile di Catherine Dunne mi affascina sempre molto. Ho letto solo tre libri di questa autrice irlandese e questo è datato 2007, 2008 nella versione per Guanda tradotto da Paola Mazzarelli. Quattro amiche, quattro compagne di studi, quattro donne che nonostante impegni e famiglie riescono a rimanere in qualche modo legate per 25 anni. Ed è proprio questo anniversario che vorrebbero trascorrere insieme per raccontarsi finalmente tutto quello non si sono ancora dette.

At A Time Like This revolves around the story of four women who's been friends with each other for a long time. Now that they are already in the stage wherein family, relationship, and children are expected to have, their friendship was not an exemption in 'uncertainty' and 'change.'
Each character has a story to tell which was so much relatable for the readers, especially that they have their OWN POVs. It made me feel like I am one of them. If that would be... guess I'm the 'Claire' among Georgie, Maggie, and Nora.
Overall, the story was quite simple, yet Catherine Dunne made it so special that it became close to my heart! BUT I think the ending was a bit rushed... I expected more, nevertheless I enjoy reading it. BRB gonna call my friends rn *sobs*

Tre stelline e mezzo
All'inizio ho avuto difficoltà a seguire la storia di queste quattro amiche.
Andando avanti però l'intreccio delle loro storie e i continui flashback mi hanno appassionato sempre più.
Certo l'idea dell'intreccio delle vite di quattro amiche ormai è letta e riletta..Nel complesso tre stelline e mezzo

E' uno di quei libri che definisco "da ombrellone": si leggono bene, ma non ti lasciano nulla.
I personaggi della Dunne mi lasciano sempre un vago senso di irritazione: per loro è sempre tutto troppo facile, di conseguenza le loro storie sono talmente poco credibili da non suscitare interesse.
I personaggi della Dunne mi lasciano sempre un vago senso di irritazione: per loro è sempre tutto troppo facile, di conseguenza le loro storie sono talmente poco credibili da non suscitare interesse.

This feels like a glimpse into the lives and secrets of four women and their friendships. Intriguing and compelling … and actually left he wanting more! What happened next? Did it all work out for them all?

Un libro nel quale noi donne ci rispecchiamo, perché ci porta a rivivere i rapporti che instauriamo con il nostro stesso sesso, qui ritroviamo tanti dei comuni stereotipi che giornalmente viviamo nelle nostre vite quotidiane (gelosie, invidie, alleanze,complicità ecc.), nonostante tutto sappiamo però benissimo, e questo racconto torna a ribadirlo, che l'amicizia tra donne è speciale, unica, è stimolante, arricchisce, è divertente, ci aiuta ed incoraggia a vivere la vita in maniera più accativante e frizzante.

I liked this retro read. It was 16 years old at the time of reading, and focuses on the friendship of Claire, Georgie, Maggie and Nora that began in childhood and university and is now on the verge of falling apart. We have to go back in time to find out why. It's told in dialogue by each individual character in the first person which can be annoying as each has a differing point of view, but I find this an interesting storytelling device.
We see how relationships shift and change as people grow up, have relationships, marry, become parents and manage their lives. Not all of them do it well, but this adds to the interest. In the reminiscing of the past, I loved Maggie telling us that she worked as a barmaid at the Frog and Nightgown - I know of a bar called that which has lots of memories!
I thought the ending, however, was terrible. No spoilers, but in really bad taste.

Four women, who know each other since they were young, tell the story of their friendship and relationship from their own personal point of view. They are now in their forties and a lot has happend since the time they were children (Georgie and Maggie) and University students (Claire and Nora).
While I was reading I sometimes felt like the 5th friend who listens to the stories and problems of the other 4 women and sometimes I identified myself with one or the other depending on the situation.
What I appreciated most was the narration in first person and the fact that the same situation is described from different perspectives according to the narrotor's personality...

The ups and downs of friendships.
4 women initially meet at university. After university they go in their separate directions, they decide to keep in touch, with regular evenings together.
The four women are really quite different characters, and this sometimes leads to friction. Secrets may or may not be shared, and sometimes judgements are made not knowing the full story. The biggest secret, kept for a couple of decades, makes everyone completely re-evaluate their feelings about Nora.
There are of course love interests, which again sometimes cause conflict.

At first I wasn't sure I was enjoying this story of 4 women, spanning 25 years. I wasn't warming to the characters and found their worries a bit shallow.
However, as each woman tells the story from her viewpoint, sometimes repeating episodes, I became more compelled to find out the secrets each woman was guarding.
Because they each speak with their own voice the characters are clearly drawn and I found myself liking two of them a lot and disliking the other two. I always believe an author does well to make a reader dislike a main character.
The story is very cleverly structured and the secrets and twists seep out as you go along. I really enjoyed it.

Da divorare quando ti vuoi allontanare dal mondo e ti serve qualcosa di appassionante, ma non impegnativo, che sai portai leggere tutto d'un fiato - perché non hai altri impegni, se non quello di stare sprofondata nella poltrona fino all'ultima riga.
"Se stasera siamo qui" è stato il libro perfetto per me, per il momento in cui l'ho letto.

A book very close to home with 4 women who have been friends since their early 20's and are now in their 40's. I found though that their lack of honesty and concern for each other reduced the value of them and their friendships. It was a good book and I would read more of the author's but I am disappointed the women although complex were essentially so shallow emotionally.
