About the author
Oliver DeMille
28 books124 followersOliver DeMille is the founder and former president of George Wythe University, a founding partner of The Center for Social Leadership, and the author of A Thomas Jefferson Education: Teaching a Generation of Leaders for the 21st Century.
As a university student, Oliver went on a search for a truly great education — experiencing private and public universities, technical and religious schools, corporate and international educational institutions, prestigious colleges and worthless diploma mills; he literally sampled the best and the worst that modern education has to offer, and virtually everything in between.
As a result, he found a small Bible school where he worked closely with mentors and studied the Bible and the great classics in many fields. Although Coral Ridge Baptist University was not regionally accredited, he was so excited by the quality of his studies that he left a large, well-respected university to focus full time on his classical education. He earned the B.A. in Biblical Studies (May 1992), M.A. in Christian Political Science (December 1992), and Ph.D. in Religious Education (May 1994) at Coral Ridge Baptist University.
He has written and spoken extensively about the traditional education system versus his intense mentored-classical experience with Coral Ridge and his mentor–Dr. W. Cleon Skousen. After his Coral Ridge studies, he returned to Brigham Young University and completed the B.A. in International Relations with a minor in Aerospace Studies, graduating Magna cum Laude (1994). He then devoted his time to refining the educational design and curriculum of the liberal arts school he founded, George Wythe College (now University).
Oliver is a popular author, keynote speaker, and business consultant. Presently, he devotes a majority of his time to writing. He and his wife Rachel are raising their 8 children in southern Utah.

This book was a great follow up to Oliver De Mille's last book "The Coming Aristocracy".
The Coming Aristocracy shows how we've departed from the true freedoms outlined for us by our founding documents, and then challenges us to learn more about freedom so we can better preserve it.
I appreciated what "Freedom Shift" had to say because it shows us what to DO about our loss of freedom in America today. Demille proposes that there are three major decisions that can be made by regular citizens today that will make a rapid difference in our ability to preserve freedom for ourselves and our children.
First, there needs to be a revolution in Entrepreneurship. Basically, we need more producers and less consumer-minded people! Secondly, we need to have more INDEPENDENTS in the political process. More independently minded citizens who research and make decisions based on facts and issues rather than on political parties. And third, taking and applying lessons that can be learned from tribal culture. Particularly the "New Tribes" as he calls those who are hooked into various groups on the internet. That last part was the most interesting to me, because it was unfamiliar territory.
Very much worth the read! I highly recommend it.

I would have likely given this five stars if I could better grasp some of the Author's terms. I'll likely read this again and again in the next several months, because I think this work is very important to regaining the freedoms we are rapidly losing.

If you want shallow opinions and simple answers, turn on talk radio. If you want depth and principles, turn to Oliver DeMille.

What an amazing book. I’ve always considered myself a ‘conservative’ but Oliver has debunked the rhetoric and helped me understand the importance of objectivity in ‘choosing political sides’. I’m a lot more tolerant of opinions that differ from my own as a direct result of reading FreedomShift. My motivation to make a great difference in my family, community, and nation is stronger than ever. My resolve to help make a ‘freedom shift’ happen has greater meaning to me and my family.

What a great time time read this book, an election year. FreedomShift is an amazing analysis of our culture and ends with a perceptive view on America's political parties.
Oliver DeMille pulls out, now obvious, conclusions about our society and the needed prescription for change. This goes beyond party politics (and to me appears to be an attempt to heal party divisions by understanding those divisions).
A must read.

A lot of great information in this book. First couple times I went through this I didn't get much out of the third section on Tribes. This time was very different. I really enjoyed what it was teaching about tribes or communities and the impact it has on families and future generations. I can also see the importance of great tribal communities for the future of freedom. It gave me a better idea on how I would like to raise a family and also how I should be for other families.

Love the book! While lots of people see the problems facing the United States, this book draws on timeless principles and historical lessons to paint the way forward. Oliver offers practical advice for every individual and family to consider. This book offers the reader a sense of real hope for America's future without shying away from the realities we face. BRAVO!

This book was such a paradigm shift for me in how I view the government and my role as a citizen. I always felt so helpless with just my vote. Now after reading FreedomShift I understood better what I can do personally to make this country a better place and this has given me a lot of hope.

An interesting book, FreedomShift (2010) focuses on three shifts which, according to DeMille's thesis, - if taken - will lead to an environment that promotes Freedom. These three areas are: Entrepreneurship, Independents (as an alternative to the older two party division into Democrats and Republicans), and the building of New Tribes; especially virtual social networks that are built in the age of the Internet, and forming communities which learn from that which has worked in past and current tribal cultures.
Entrepreneurship is pretty self-explanatory, Independents are continuing to grow as people become more fed up with the current iteration of politics, the last area of focus, or choice as Mr. DeMille, puts it I find interesting.
The age of the Net and global reach has allowed groups of like-minded individuals to transcend national boundaries in a way that would have been unthinkable 20 to 30 years go; it makes me think of the related observation in a PLA publication (1999) of the rising importance of non-state actors; NGOs, social activist groups and so forth.
One slight, possible anachronism, I think though is the overly positive view of the freedom of individuals to band together on the Internet; this is in light of the current wave of censorship and cancel culture which has especially plagued previously free and open social platforms these past couple of years that simply did not exist a decade ago.
A worthwhile read, if possibly a bit dated, in the third section; I would very interested in an update to the third section in light of recent societal events and cultural shifts.

I appreciate what he says in this book and loved his points and confidence. I also love the many wonderful things he pointed out. Makes you really think.
However, I thought he often repeated himself many times. Is that just me? It was also hard to understand some things he said and wish he could had simplified it.
I do like the book though, and I enjoy learning new things.

The first section is quite good, at least for me. It won't be valuable for everyone. The other two sections were simply blind speculations and will bore most people to death.
