Call him Scarabus. Call him the damned. For over three thousand years the demon Scarabus has waged a one-man war on the cult of mad zealots who created him. Able to change his shape at will and command the elements around him, he can appear as a beautiful young man or a bloodthirsty swarm of insects. Scarabus lives immortal in time and space, lord of darkness, servant to none. Journey with Scarabus through the dark veil of years as he walks the night, searching for the woman he loves, searching for an escape from a living damnation on earth.
Scarabus is the type of book that any reader can enjoy, since it is not stuck in any one genre. There is horror but it is not drenched in gore; action and romance are perfectly balanced so that one does not overshadow the other. This, in my opinion, makes for a wonderful read. Karen Koehler has a wonderful ability to make her reads feel what her characters are going through; coupled with the ability to paint a rich backdrop of both history and setting, making her story highly addictive.. I look forward to reading more of her work.
I had wanted to try a Koehler book and finally found this one. But it was a disappointment- the story was different, but it was slow moving until the last few pages, and confusing at the end. And the typos and grammatical errors were insulting to readers.
Loved his character, but I wanted more than the book offered. It's not that the ending wasn't great, I just wanted more of his life (or afterlife). It's that kind of book.
