A FLICKER IN THE DARK meets YOU in this chilling psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the last page...

Florence Samuels was living the life she’d always dreamed of: married to the love of her life and about to become a mother after years of trying. Everything was perfect.
But she never imagined that the love of her life would also be the one to destroy them forever.
On the anniversary of losing both her husband and her unborn child, Florence returns to her once favorite place to pick up the broken pieces of her life and find some solace. But what she doesn’t expect is to see the man who saved her life on that fateful day. Or for him to help her begin to navigate her grief, and her guilt.
Silas Hale.
Florence starts to believe that this chance encounter could lead to something more; to a second shot at happiness. At her dream life. But when the monster from her past returns, Florence must decide if trying to hold onto that dream, to Silas, is worth the pain and torment that’s threatening them.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Danielle, for trusting me with your book baby.

While I had some idea of what this book was going to be about, I really only knew the bare minimum. And let me tell you, that is the best way to go. When I tell you there were parts that made my jaw DROP, I truly mean it.

With her debut novel, Danielle Morris tells the story of Florence Samuels, a strong FMC who has gone through something so terribly tragic. On the same day, Florence loses both her husband and her unborn child. During her journey to recover and begin to heal, she meets someone who turns her life around. Silas Hale.

Florence navigates her tremendous grief and guilt over her loss with the help of her best friend Ivy, and with Silas.

Birds of a Feather is about grief and loss, recovery, friendship, new love, and secrets.

Get ready for this one, officially coming on September 2, 2023.

Second read: eARC round two! I took my time reading it this go around and I’m so glad I did. I was really able to pick up on all the hints sprinkled through out and it made me see some characters in a different light from the get go.

Danielle, thank you again for trusting me with your precious book. I loved it just as much the second time around. I can’t wait to read whatever’s next!

This was a rather intense read. There is Physical abuse in this story. Incredibly written and you are kept guessing as to what will occur next.
I would recommend this as a great read. Several big twist it will definitely make you think that you were not paying attention so one huge hunt pay attention to everything you hear everything you think you might say and try your best to figure out who's at fault for what's going on.

August 2024 audio read: everytime I reread I swear it gets better. I know what happens and I’m still shocked every time 😂 Narrator did do great! 👏🏼 definitely worth a listen!

Original review July 2023:
Finished my second read and it was just as good as the first but I loved being able to read it all in one go this time!

The twists and turns in this are so good. The ending got me good the first time and rereading the whole book knowing how it ends makes you see everything so differently!

Overall I adore this book. The characters are all so imperfect and flawed and that’s why it works.

Everything Florence goes through left such a hole in my heart. I love this woman with every fiber of my being. Her strength and determination are unmatched and one of my favorite parts of her.

Florence and Ivy will forever hold such a special place in my heart. Their friendship is goals in every way. There is nothing I love more in a book that female friendships and Danielle created the most perfect one in these pages. The way they go to bat for each other no matter what and hold each other up when shit goes sideways. I love them so much.

The men of this book though 😮‍💨 I don’t know that they’re a little dark and twisted. Danielle made morally grey and downright evil hot and idk what that says about me that I loved it so much. 🫣😂

It’s hard trying to leave a fully unbiased review because that’s my best friend yall. My person. The dark to my twisty. The Florence to my Ivy. But I truly believe she knocked it out of the park for her debut.

Please read the content warnings before reading. 🫶🏼

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I don’t particularly like reading blurbs so tbh, I didn’t read this one when the author sent it over to me. I love going into books based on vibes and what I felt from the first few chapters gave me WAY different vibes than what this book was in the BEST WAY. Like HOLY SHIT. This book. THIS BOOK. It threw me for every loop imaginable. But not like one of those books that have too many twists for shock value. All the build up and twist made so much sense and I’m actually kicking myself for not realizing it while I was reading.
Florence is such an amazing FMC. She’s strong and determined but I love that her vulnerable side of someone who was very broken came through as well. I went from “my heart. This woman is so resilient when she shouldn’t have to be” to “YES FUCK IT UP FLO” a lot.
For this being Danielle’s debut novel, I am blown away and would recommend this book to everyone!!
Thanks for sending me this ARC, Danielle!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review 🩵

I think a broken part of me will always love this man. An even more broken part of me wants to forgive him for everything he’s done to us… and give into the feelings that I still have for him.

Reading this book was like riding an emotional rollercoaster. I bawled my eyes out throughout the first three chapters, became annoyed somewhere around the middle, and I actually wrote, “wtf is going on” in my Kindle notes somewhere around the end.

This review is likely more of a rant, but it also proves that Morris has created a simple but intricate story that leaves you frustrated, obsessed, and desperate to keep reading. I want more.

Can we get another epilogue, please? 🥺

It’s taken some time for me to figure out how to review this book. There’s more to this book than meets the eye, and it’s nagging at me, but in all the right ways.

I was pretty pissed at Florence throughout most of the book. Ivy kind of pissed me off as well, and don’t even get me started on Silas or Detective Olsen. Oddly enough, I ended up rooting for Ronan.
Yes. I feel awful about it.

He's is a bad guy. I know. Unfortunately, I probably have a love for morally gray characters.

In general, these were not likable characters. And whether Morris intended it or not, it works beautifully. It doesn’t matter whether we like any of these characters because, for me, this book displays how vulnerable we become when we’ve been hurt and traumatized to such an extent there’s nothing left but a wound. Florence is nothing but a wound - so damn gullible it’s revolting, but it makes sense considering how much she’s lost. Her “wound” is so threatening she needs emotional stitches and bandages. Ivy, Detective Olsen, and Silas stitch and bandage up the wound, but I don’t believe it ever heals; it’s not cleansed; it’s just festering beneath layers of unhealthy relationships.

Okay, I realize it sounds like I hate Florence. It’s quite the opposite. I disliked her so much that she became the most interesting character I’ve read in a while. Surface-wise, sure, she’s gullible and naïve, but she’s naïve for a reason. And it’s that reason that makes her fascinating. And if a character keeps haunting you like Florence has, I believe the author has done something quite enchanting.

On the surface, Ivy looks like the picture-perfect BFF, but I found her smothering and overprotective to such a degree that she inserted herself into Florence’s trauma. It didn’t seem like she wanted Florence to improve or become independent at all. She practically threw her best friend at Silas. It almost makes you think: Did Ivy have an ulterior motive? Was she partnering up with Silas? It didn’t help that she kept saying “Sky Daddy.

Don’t even get me started on Silas. The fact that Florence is impressed that Silas made spaghetti carbonara speaks for itself. Really? He’s whisking eggs, cream, and parmesan together. He’s not making Tarte Tatin. I liked him for the first thirty pages, but Morris withheld so much information about him, so many actions left unexplained, it became difficult to truly care about him.

Detective Olsen felt misplaced throughout most of the novel. Was he supposed to be a romantic counterpart to Ivy? What’s the relationship between him and Ronan? Was he in love with Florence? I’m still not sure. I can’t help but wonder if his character was truly necessary. Could we have delved deeper into Ronan rather than give Detective Olsen so much screen time?

Ronan… God, I wanted more of him. I wanted more scenes, more dialogue, more of everything – something that could help me piece things together.

Oh my god. Imagine a bonus chapter from Ronan’s POV. I want to know what was going through his head when he found all those notes about Florence. I want to know about his childhood. His past? What happened to his parents? Were he and Florence doomed to end disastrously? And in the end, despite everything, I felt somewhat bad for Ronan. I wanted Ronan to save Florence, and did Florence misunderstand him in the end? Did Ronan learn that Silas was behind everything?

This book leaves you with many unanswered questions, playing into its suspenseful genre.

This is a strong debut. Morris proves that she can write suspenseful scenes that borders on thriller-like. She knows how to write tear-jerking scenes that will test your tear ducts for an hour if not two. She leaves breadcrumbs throughout her narrative for readers to pick up, trailing characters’ true intentions. It’s like solving a puzzle, and if there’s something I love, it’s a good puzzle.

I hope no one goes into this thinking it is a love story because it’s not. It’s an extremely sad story with an even sadder ending. In fact, this is perhaps every person’s nightmare. It sure left me with goosebumps, and my jaw dropped.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I can't wait to see what else Morris has in store for us in the near future.

Before reading this lovely debut from @Daniellemorriswrites I was so excited to read it because she and I are #TeamTripp (if you haven't read Rich Girl by @Haleylwrites you absolutely need to) but after reading #boaf I'm mad at her.

What. Did. I. Just. READ. DANIELLE!??!?!

This was incredible. It was heartbreakingly beautiful right off the start and while I was interested in the entire book it wasn't until about the 35-50% mark where I could N O T put the book down.

You can preorder this book now and this book will be live on Sept. 2!!! Thank you Danielle and @esthersreadingnook for this eARC!! <3

I received this ARC for free in exchange for an honest review.

I honestly couldn’t be happier with how this book just draws you in right from the prologue and you have to keep reading to get your answers.

Every time I thought I had the plot twists figured out it went the complete opposite way. So it left me confused and wondering in the best way.

I read through this entire book in one day and by the time that I got to the end my mouth dropped. I’m not sure what I was expecting but it definitely wasn’t that.

I love how all the characters are portrayed in such a realistic manner and how the author has a way of making you feel for each one.

Overall I loved this book and would definitely read again and recommend to friends!!

Thank you Danielle for letting me read your first book baby in advance!!!

Florence had it all.. married to the love of her life and about to become a mother. Everything was great until they arent.... and one horrible and terrifying night will change everything... can she overcome her demons and continue on with life with strength or will she let the darkness swallow her whole.

You all I'm speechless.... I can't even write my normal review because I'm so speechless. And I really don't want to spoil a d@mn thing!!! I don't even want to talk about the characters so you can make up your own minds about them 🤣🤣 but the men in this story ☠️☠️☠️

What To Expect:
▪︎Thriller Suspense Romance
▪︎Lovers to Enemies
▪︎Second Chance Romance
▪︎Plot Twist(s) 🤣☠️
▪︎Trigger Warnings ⚠️ (may contain spoilers)
*Late-term pregnancy loss
*Domestic assault/ domestic violence
*Dubious consent
*Suicidal thoughts
*Injury with knife and gun
*Death scenes
*Mild alcohol abuse
*Some sexual content (not detailed but open door)
▪︎Emotional Damage

Danielle's writing was solid for her first book. I wish the characters were a bit more developed. Especially Florence, sometimes I wanted to get inside her head with more detail. I also wanted more descriptors of the characters and places. The feelings and smell... Basically, I just needed more details throughout the book.. so there wasn't as much of a disconnect. But overall, I couldn't put this book down. And that ending... I'm still reeling. I don't know how to feel about it, and I think it'll stay that way forever. I can't wait to read what Danielle comes up with next.

Hi, my name is Sara and I need therapy after reading this book.

”That’s one thing that nobody warns you about when you lose someone. Their ghosts stick around. They are hiding in every nook and cranny. They haunt my every thought and plague my every dream.”

Imagine you are in the happiest time of your life, about to give birth to the child you have been carrying and protecting for the last seven months. Imagine how your partner will light up seeing their son for the first time and getting to hold his tiny little body in their arms. Then imagine it is all ripped from you in an instant as both you and your child are stabbed and left for dead.

That’s what happened to Florence and now she is left to heal and try to pick up the pieces of her broken life. How in the world can she do that, especially as her crazy ex-husband seems to be back to finish the job? Well she has a great cast of characters to help her along — her best friend, her savior that day when she almost died, and a cop who wants to help even though no one believes her story.

Danielle Morris’s debut novel will have you crying and then soaring as Florence finds herself again and then will have your jaw on the floor. Who can be trusted? You’ll have to find out when this book releases on 9/2/23.

Thank you Danielle for the eARC, I loved every minute of it. — Fans of LOST, read this for some sweet flashbacks and insane twists and turns. Do it. Sawyer would read it.

This book had me laughing, crying, and wanting to throw my book/phone by the end (in a good way). Danielle really had us! I am in shock that this her debut novel. I love when a book that has me OBSESSED and i just need to know what’s going to happen next. The only way i could compare this ending is how i felt at the end of Verity. 👀 I had a feeling i knew what was going to happen but there were so many twists and turns that she really had me on my toes second guessing myself. I’m just suspicious of everything, you know. 😂 Also the flashbacks are so well done in my opinion. I normally have a hard time with the pacing and placement of them but these were perfect and matched well with the pacing and timing in the story. My heart aches for Florence in this book and it makes me want to reach through the pages and give her a big hug. 🥹 Ivy and Florence’s friendship made my heart so full. I think all women need at least one friendship like this, someone who is your other half and would go to the ends of the earth for you. The romance was good but to me this meant so much and it hit right in the feels. AND LET’S NOT forget the stars of the damn show, Lola and Duke. Pets are angels and we do not deserve them.

Congrats on your first book baby, Danielle! So proud of you! 🎉🖤

As always, read trigger/content warnings. ❤️

Okay for starters...I'm speechless, but I'll try to get something out! I thought I had a pretty good idea of how this book was going to go from reading info about it. I was wrong! I thought I was going to struggle with how fast the story line was progressing but honestly I had no problem keeping up. The characters were all well explained so I felt like I was getting to know each one. Only to feel like I didn't know a couple of them at all half way through the book lol I think I spent most of the book thinking I'd figured it all out, only to turn the page and be hooked because it was an "as the plot thickens" moment with every chapter I finished. Definitely one of those where you keep telling yourself that you're only reading one more chapter....u til you realize the books over. The ending was very well written and didn't feel cheesy. I'm usually here for the smut and, while this one didn't have ALL the spice, I felt there was enough to keep things interesting. I won't give spoilers but Danielle has a way of keeping you on your toes and on the edge of your seat. I'm excited to read more of her books.

I just finished this book and man does it hit you right in the feels!

When I discovered Danielle Morris on Tiktok and read the blurb, I was hesitant to read it, because child loss is a heavy theme in this book. But now that I read it, I'm glad I did. Danielle Morris did a wonderful job describing the feelings and grieve and just all around journey of a mother who lost her baby.

But that is definitely not all you get in her very first book "Birds of a Feather". You get love and lust (not overly descriptive, but hot all the same) and beautiful relationships and major plot twists that make you go back and forth in your mind.

I think I just love everything about this book. Add in this beautiful cover and I'm a goner. So, thank you Danielle, for letting me be part of your author journey.

100% recommend (do check trigger warnings before rearing though, mental health is important!)

Danielle, my friend, who hurt you? Who? Because to start with that insanely emotionally damaging prologue and go from there into more crazy? Wow.

This was a great read. Twists, turns, a best friend we should all wish we could have, and Lola. That's the cat. She's perfect. And I can't leave out Duke, the dog. The goodest boi. A suspenseful mystery with adorable Hallmark levels of sweetness scattered throughout. There are some triggers to be warned of, including DV and death of an unborn child. The author does a good job of not glorifying either, but using them as an integral part of her storytelling.

Please support this author and read this book! For a debut book, it is so good. Captivating, traumatic, and slightly steamy!

One hell of a debut novel. (ARC Review.)

Morris gripped my attention from the first darn page. I walked into this book blind as a bat, and let me tell you something, it didn’t disappoint in the slightest. I was screaming, crying, and laughing the entire time. If you don’t buy this book on 9/2/2023, you are insane and missing out on one hell of a ride. Narrated by Amanda Dunlap

At first, I really hated a character and was happy with how everything was turning out for them, but the twist !!! I never would have thought things would turn out the way it turned. This is the first book I "read" from this author and while I don't care for spicy scenes, it didn't take away from the book. I loved it.

I enjoyed the narrator as well. She was easily understandable, even for a non English native (me).

Review:
This debut novel was compelling -- I found myself reading it on my break, in my car, and during any down time that I had. It has twists and turns throughout, combined with well written/well timed flash back scenes that pull the story together. The relationship between the FMC and her best friend was endearing and heartwarming. However, the relationship between the FMC and the love interest felt rushed and forced. While it does get explained by the end of the book, I felt it was a tad bit unbelievable that the FMC who went through as much as she did would IMMEDIATELY fall for someone else. I found myself being skeptical of their relationship the entire time. The last twist didn't hit as hard as it could have if the pacing was a tad bit slower. However, the way their interactions were written eased over that, as they were so sweet and had me smiling at my Kindle.

Despite seeing the last twist coming, it was still a sucker punch to the stomach. The emotions conjured up by Danielle's beautiful writing stayed with me for hours after finished, and now I want to go back and reread it to pick up on the subtle hints she left throughout the story. This story was compelling, had me on the edge of my seat, and was so much fun to read. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a mildly dark romance-type book. I'm blown away that this is her first novel because it certainly did not read like one! Amazing!

Birds Of A Feather is Danielle Morris' debut, and it does not disappoint!

Florence was raised by wonderful, loving parents until the age of 14, when they were tragically killed in a car accident. She had to move after that to live with her grandparents. Not only did she lose her parents, but she also lost access to her beloved forest where she spent countless hours walking amidst the trees, listening to wildlife, and making memories with her mother and father. While her grandparents kept their ashes on the mantle, Florence wanted them to be together and free within their forest. She convinced a young man to drive her to the forest so she could scatter their ashes, and lay them to rest. That is how she met Ronan.

The two quickly fell in love, but that it only the beginning of their story. The author starts us off with a traumatic scene where Florence loses her unborn child within her forest at the hands of the man she loves.

Morris then jumps ahead a year where we learn that she survived the attack but is still grieving her son's death. As part of her journey of healing and trying to move forward, she revisits the site she once held so dear, and tries to say goodbye to the child she never got to hold. By some amazing coincidence, the man who found her the year prior is there once more. She learns his name is Silas.

There is a connection between them, and she feels safe in his presence. Florence wonders if perhaps she might have a second chance at a happily ever after.

I won't say more about the story as I wouldn't want to ruin it for you. I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of her book and experience the same highs and lows I did. I will caution that this is not your run of the mill contemporary romance. There are many twists and turns in the story, and a great deal of suspense.

Florence is a strong and courageous FMC who is a survivor. She has a heart of gold, appreciates everything she has even with so much that she has lost, and is fiercely loyal to those who have stood by her. Ronan and Silas are complex, multifaceted MMCs who share an intense love of Florence. Ivy, Florence's best friend, and Detective James are the secondary characters. The story would not be the same without them. Oh, and there's also a fluffy white cat named Lola and a German Shepherd named Duke. Both are delightful!

I found Morris' writing to be captivating, enthralling and downright riveting. I am eager to see what comes next from this brilliant new author.

Birds of a Feather by Danielle Morris

⭐️ 3,5/5
🌶️ 1/5

This is the authors debut novel. The biggest trigger warnings for this book are late term pregnancy loss, domestic violence and stalking.

Right off the bat I need to say that my expectations were high for this one… I usually love the books that Esther (a fellow bookstagrammer) recommends but this one just didn’t hit the mark for me.

I don’t want to be a grammar, punctuation or spelling nazi but there were too many mistakes to overlook. I can understand 1 to 3 mistakes in an entire book, we’re only human, but I honestly gave up counting halfway through.

There were also so many cringe worthy moments, like being all kinds of intimate on the bench that was built in the place where your son (and nearly you) died. Or saying juvenile things like ‘Sky Daddy’ as an almost 30 year old woman…

The pace was completely off. I feel like all the ‘excitement’ happened in the last few chapters. Majority of the book was spent reading the FMC’s inner monologue of the trauma she endured and then the man she just started dating and is all of a sudden in love with. It was rushed and wasn’t believable at all. One of the tropes listed is ‘second chance romance’ but I have no idea where in the book this happened. I think ‘he falls first’ or ‘insta-love’ would be better suited. Then there’s the last ‘twist’ that wasn’t really a twist for me because by then I’d figured it out.

Look, for a debut novel, it’s really not bad. I think the Beta Readers should have mentioned these things to the author in order for her to iron out these ‘kinks’ and maybe it needed to go through the editing process one more time to sort out any language issues. Suspense is a tricky genre to write and while there were a few edge of the seat moments, overall, I was left feeling confused.

I’m hoping there will be a second book. Maybe something more to do with the FMC being unhinged by what happened to her. I think that way, this book, and her actions would make more sense.

Emotional and Twisty!

I went into reading this book blind. I assumed it was a cozy romance book of some sort. While it was that, it was so much more, too. The beginning made me cry and there were other sad moments that consistently happened throughout the book. I did enjoy the budding romance between Florence and Silas (her rescuer, swoon!) I felt like Florence just couldn't catch a break, though! Then twist after kept happening, setting my mind swirling. The twists lasted all the way until the shocking end! Oh my gosh! But anyway, let's get to the characters.

Florence is a warrior and I felt for her, doing her best to pick up the shattered pieces of her life and recover from the ptsd that her crazy ex put her through. She's the kind of character that no matter what she's going through, we champion for her to come out on top. I appreciated her love for the forest, and I admired the fierce way she protected those she cares about.

Silas is definitely the hero of Florence's life. I have to admire the way he cares for her, protects her and makes her the number one priority in his life. Plus the bench he builds her is so sweet. He seems to make her happy and give her the happy ending she deserves.

Ivy is the best! I love that her and Florence have each other in their lives! Ivy's the best friend we all wish to have! Mother-henning and all!

Silas' grandfather was a sweet addition to the story, and I liked the way he tied into her past.

Ronan is a psycho. What he did to Florence makes him unredeemable and unforgivable in my eyes.

James has his moments.

This story had it all...romance, mystery, suspense, tragedy, happy endings and twists, twists, twists galore! If you enjoy romantic suspense books, you will like this one. It will keep you in the dark to the very surprising end.

I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to this author's next release.

Danielle sent me an ARC copy of this book in exchange for a review of the book. I couldn’t be more grateful and excited that I got to read this incredible story.

Birds of a Feather is the perfect cozy mystery/thriller – It gave fall vibes that I was not expecting! When I say I couldn’t put this down, I mean it. I read this in two days. The first thing I fell in love with was the characters – Flo and Ivy. I felt like I was with them; it was comforting. It was as if I had known Ivy and Flo since I was a young child. The bond I created with these two characters made me feel like I was a part of their world.

The world was real, and the emotions were raw. It is the perfect trifecta of world-building, character depth, and suspense. I felt the depth of pain Flo experienced and was not emotionally prepared for the love I would feel toward these characters (especially Ivy). One of the most exciting parts of the story is the flashbacks. The flashbacks bring you back to Flo and Ronan’s relationship and give you just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. They push you forward without giving away the major turns.

Everything in this book surprised me (even when I thought I figured it out). This is a book I will read again, as I know you can’t see every piece from the first read -it’s filled with clues, mystery, anguish, and healing. Page one will hold you captive until you finish the book!

PS. Ladies, find you a man that will build you a bench.

Rating and review will come eventually but brooooooooo that ending 😭😵‍💫🥴

This debut novel is a fast paced tale that takes us through Florence’s intense and violent loss and the navigation of her romantic life in the aftermath. The main timeline of this story is interspersed with flashbacks to weave together Florence’s story in an engaging way, with a wild ending and an even wilder epilogue.

I loved the use of the flashbacks to help tell the story, despite them being a sadder window into the deterioration of Florence and Ronan’s relationship. In the flashbacks and in the main timeline, there are so many hints to what’s really going on that are so easy to breeze past, but looking back seem to make it so clear what’s going on! I was definitely hooked and wanted to know what was going on, and easily could have read this book in one sitting! This cast of characters is quite the crew, and certainly your quintessential millennial archetypes.

With this being a debut from an indie author, I am looking forward to where Morris goes next as an author. While this book is not perfect, the overall arc of the story and the twist pulled through and carried the emotional weight for me as a reader. It’s a blend of genres that I don’t read super often or spend a lot of time in, but I enjoyed this one quite a lot.

As far as rating, I’m giving it 5⭐️ as I really enjoyed it! If the heart of the story is able to come through, I’m pretty much always going to give it five stars. And I see that with this one. Again, I’m looking forward to seeing where Morris goes, because I think she will only get better and better from here!

Wow 😮. This book was a tale of two halves. The first half is so sad, emotional and wonderfully hopeful. It’s a beautiful tale of second chances, finding love after loss and the excitement of new romance. Florence is such a strong female character. She’s been through hell and survived and she’s slowly starting to put the pieces of her life back together again.

Silas is the supportive male main character, he’s literally saved her life in the past and now he seems to be doing it again. The relationship development between them is cute and so romantic.

Then the second half comes along which still has all the sweetness and romance but against a backdrop of trauma. It felt like a thriller by the end. This wasn’t a bad thing because it was so well executed. There were lots of plot twists and you are kept constantly wondering whose can you trust and who you really shouldn’t.

I’ve never read anything quite like this before - is romantic thriller even a genre? But I loved every second of this book and the ending has me 😱

A brilliant debut from this author and I will definitely be picking up future books.

Make sure you check trigger warnings- includes domestic abuse, late pregnancy loss, bereavement, sexual abuse (off page) etc

I wish I could give this 3.5 out of 5 stars, not just 3! Because it definitely deserves the other .5.

For a debut novel it was good! I’ve read a lot of dark romance and books about morally grey characters so I think that’s where I struggled with this book. While what happened to her was horrific, that was the only dark and twisted part of the book besides the ending.

Florence’s character seemed very immature for her being nearly 30 and having lost a child. The phrase “Sky daddy” gave off the age of young 20’s. And she fell so unbelievably fast for someone she didn’t know. It was hard to really get behind their relationship because it seemed so rushed in the book. I think if it had drawn out over the course of a couple weeks before she started to feel something for him it would be way different! Sometimes filler is good!

I did not, however, expect that TWIST ending until the last 3/4 of the book. It was a good twist to keep it interesting. I also thought the author did a great job on incorporating the flashbacks to Florence’s past.

Overall for it being a debut novel, I think it was good and just lacked character development/matched age to behavior.

Whitney’s Thoughts:
I have mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, I could not put it down and wanted to know what would happen next. I really loved the idea for this story and read it in 24 hours. On the other hand, I really didn’t enjoy it as it unfolded. Characters say “Sky Daddy” multiple times and it made me cringe. I thought for a minute that the story was going to surprise me and go in a different direction and then it ended up being just as I predicted. The emotional journey of our FMC was ultimately unsatisfying and the romance wasn’t what I had been hoping for. Again, it was engaging and I wanted to know what would happen next, but it was ultimately not satisfying for me.

Let me start off by first saying how excited I was to read Danielle’s book baby! I watched her work so hard over the last year to get this story out in the world, and I’m so proud of you for publishing your first book. 👏🏻👏🏻

Birds of a Feather comes with lots of TW so please, check out the author’s socials and always take care of yourself first.

If you like emotional trauma, this one’s for you 😅 This story starts off with a horrible tragedy that had me in tears from the very first page. But across the span of this book, the main character Florence deals with her grief openly and continues to work every day towards healing and finding love in her life again. I absolutely adore the friendship between Flo and Ivy 🥺 Ivy is the best friend we all want in our lives who will take down anyone in your path who tries to do you harm.

This story has romance, mystery, friendship, and a few crazy twists and turns you’re not gonna want to miss 😳 Let me know if you’re read this or plan to, because I’m dying to discuss a few things! (I’ve already yelled in Danielle’s dms about it 😂)
