Having run in IL XC while Joe Newton was a coach, this book provided a lot of great insights from his experience as a coach. Much of what he hits on I am applying right now with the athletes I'm currently working with and hopefully XC/TF athletes in the future. Keeping this book on my shelf for all the great perspectives it lends and showcasing how great a coach can be!
I was recommended this book as I am coaching a middle school cross country team for the first time. I thoguht the book was really good, however, it is based on coaching HS cross country. So even though the tips and advice were helpful, they weren't totally applicable to the level I'll be coaching. But overall, good book. I would recommend it to anyone who is embarking on a cross country coaching position!
If you don't run - no problem. This book is a fantastic book to motivate people to do their very best at anything. The hardest job for a coach is to get through to each runner in whatever way works best for them. Newton is the gold standard and he reveals his secrets in this book.
this may well deserve a higher mark, its just that I do not have enough experience coaching to fully appreciate it. Newton is amazing: 25 state championships and counting. It was an honor to meet him once at a national cross country meet.
