Steve Olson is the author of Eruption: The Untold Story of Mount St. Helens (winner of a Washington State Book Award), Mapping Human History (a finalist for the National Book Award), and other books. He lives in Seattle, Washington.
This was the first book I red about biotechnology, and is based on a symposium sponsored by the Academy Industry Program, a joint project of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine in the USA [1986]. Perhaps the most telling difference of this conference is that involves the perceived level of risks associated with recombinant DNA research; particularly the human gene therapy or the release of genetically engineered organisms into the environment.
