If you married and your love for your spouse have grown cold this booklet is for you. If you are a Pastor or a biblical counselor who is ministering to a couple whose love for each other has grown cold this is also a book for you; use it as a resource but also read it for your edification!
The author Rick Thomas has written other books on Biblical counseling and Christian living. In this volume he packs a lot of good contents in a small booklet. I was immensely edified reading this especially with how he brought biblical truth and the Gospel to bear to real life marriage challenges and problem. Thomas writes this booklet in the form of a case study of a woman in marriage that he is counseling. Yet Thomas also made it clear the booklet’s teaching is not gender-specific and is just as applicable for husbands as well.
The booklet begins with an introduction explaining the work. The main body of the book is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is titled “The Case of the Desperate Housewife.” Again remember this booklet is not only for women so don’t be deceived by the chapter title. I really enjoyed chapter one which tackles the problem of a spouse’ loneliness and wrong presuppositions one might have with marriage problems. In particular I thought the author did a very good job here discussing the snare of perceived needs. This chapter is great to be read regularly by those in marriage problem as a constant reminder and tool to help Christians think according to God’s truth concerning marriage problem. I also loved the five-step analysis given in this chapter from Paul Tripp that helps diagnosed our hearts concerning perceived need. Chapter Two is on bringing the Gospel to bear on a marriage grown cold followed by chapter three that is on embracing the crucible of suffering. Both chapters really help us interpret our problems biblically and also give God’s truth of the Gospel to motivate us to pursue Godliness even in a difficult marriage. Readers will find hope in these chapters and hope specifically in God and Christ. Chapter four is an encouragement to the readers that God is already there in every part of our journey and that we can trust in Him; it a chapter that encourages us onward. After chapter four the booklet has a conclusion and personal application projects that have a lot of applications from diagnostic questions, practical disciplines, etc. I also appreciated a bibliography in the end of books for further help.
Again let me say I recommend this book. It is worth purchasing and purchasing for others and the dividend is worth the affordable costs of this booklet.
