Renowned in her day for her scholarship and eloquence, Isotta Nogarola (1418-66) remained one of the most famous women of the Italian Renaissance for centuries after her death. And because she was one of the first women to carve out a place for herself in the male-dominated republic of letters, Nogarola served as a crucial role model for generations of aspiring female artists and writers.

This volume presents English translations of all of Nogarola's extant works and highlights just how daring and original her convictions were. In her letters and orations, Nogarola elegantly synthesized Greco-Roman thought with biblical teachings. And striding across the stage in public, she lectured the Veronese citizenry on everything from history and religion to politics and morality. But the most influential of Nogarola's works was a performance piece, Dialogue on Adam and Eve , in which she discussed the relative sinfulness of Adam and Eve—thereby opening up a centuries-long debate in Europe on gender and the nature of woman and establishing herself as an important figure in Western intellectual history. This book will be a must read for teachers and students of Women's Studies as well as of Renaissance literature and history.

About the author

Isotta Nogarola (1418 – 1466) was a writer and intellectual, born into a well-to-do family in Verona, Italy. She was one of ten siblings, seven of which survived into adulthood. She was passionate about her education, and spent most of her life alone, constantly studying. She died unmarried.

En mycket vackert skriven text, och - som vem det nu var sa - det vackra gör kunskap lättare att förstå och döljer det ofärdiga. Vad gäller det ofärdiga finns det väldigt lite av det i denna text - argumenten som presenteras är logiska, och i god stoisk tradition. Författaren förordar kontroll över egna affekter, och disciplin och studium, samt mod - en återkommande poäng är att det är lika syndigt att inte agera på potential, som att förhäva sig; och att dina förfäder och föräldrar har rätt att kräva det bästa du kan av dig, men att du är den enda som vet vad det bästa du kan är.

Dialogen kring Adam och Evas respektive syndighet är både roande och stimulerande. Här kommer vi tillbaka till att det vackra underlättar lärande: många av de exempel som tas upp borde upplevas mer avancerade än de är, för det är inte en självklart enkel diskussion, men genom formuleringarna som Nogarola finner, blir det inte lika svårt.

Boken är väl värd en eftermiddag, och är förmodligen något jag kommer referera för mina barn någon gång i framtiden.

This is more valuable as a historical document than an interesting fun read, but it’s kinda cool to see how Isotta Nogarola was absolutely laying the groundwork for people like my beloved Arcangela Tarabotti, and plus, she’s got a pretty fascinating life story.
