Jim Baen was Editor-in-Chief and publisher of Baen Books, and renowned in the science fiction field for his taste and ability to select authors with strong storytelling ability and steer them to commercial success. Prior to founding of Baen Books, he was the editor of science fiction magazine Galaxy, science fiction editor of Ace Books, and an editor at Tor Books.
This was the second (Fall 1987) issue of New Destinies, Baen's re-boot of his series of paperback magazines Destinies that he edited while working for Ace, this time under his eponymous publishing imprint. It's a bit shorter than the earlier incarnation, but includes many of the same authors, a pleasing mix of fiction and non-fiction, and the same philosophies and attitudes. I remember particularly enjoying the pieces by Gregory Benford, Steven Gould, and Charles Sheffield.
