Ghost is good at what he does, quietly and efficiently executing the missions assigned to him by his superiors at Rescue & Investigations Global. They might not be the sorts of jobs he can ever brag about, but he's damned good at them. That is, until a mission to assassinate nearly results in the death of the wrong man, and Ghost and his superiors realize that they have been deceived, and that a greater game is being played. Then a mission to kill becomes a mission to rescue, and Ghost finds himself ordered to protect a man who is like nothing he has ever encountered before...
Andra claims it's her father who's to blame, reading The Hobbit to her at bedtime when she was seven. All her fantasy and Other World obsessions started from there. Growing up in Asia, she caught the usual afternoon kiddie anime series on TV after school but the beginning of a love to last a lifetime for fiction and fantasy came via Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 movie Akira which she saw when she was eleven. A decade and a half later in London, after many more anime series, Dragonlance books, Darkness: The Gathering artwork, through high school and hand-writing stories into notebooks with a mysterious penchant for getting lost by the folks who "borrowed" them, comic books, graphic novels and Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, she's still at it. Still dreaming, still writing.
3.5 stars Ghost is a black ops agent that has the mission of killing Ian Frost, but then it goes all wrong and, instead of assassinate him, he must protect him.
The book needs an editor asap. The repetitions and the switching of names (is he Ghost, Kazu or Kazuhi??) was annoying as hell. The worst of all, though, was the fact that they kiss somewhere between 20% and then they forget it; they even think how is was possible to feel attracted to someone if they hadn't even kissed them yet. Besides, it's too short and the reader doesn't have an opportunity to get to know the MCs fully. They jump into action right away.
Another thing, this has little action. If you are looking for a book with guns and bad guys, this one may not be for you. The romance, although a bit rushed, was believable and sweet. I wish the story wasn't so short and the characters had a chance to develop their relationship, but at least they fitted together :)
This was more than just a thriller, although those parts were really good. It was also a heart wrenching love story. I cried several times. It wasn't perfect but it was so good, it's left me with an intense memory.
I enjoyed this story a lot, though I accidentally read Of Suits and Swords first, which is sort of like the sequel.
It's much more brutal than the first one, though really, can't be clumped together with the really gritty books.
It had quite a wonderful romance, in spite of being quite rushed.
I wished the ending was more. . . conclusive.
Overall I think this was a well written, wonderful story. It actually had some legitimate action, not like some books with badly researched and written gun fights to cover up the fact that it's really just pure fluff romance.
The story did need another round of editing (there were some inconstancies through the story). Also, it's like it was an alternate world, but not quite. I liked the beginning a fair bit, but then the story went a bit sideways and was hard to follow at times.
3.5 stars An assassin who went to kill his mark and fell for him. Now this does not sound surprising. BUT the assassin, Ghost, works for the british government and the mark,Ian, was an innocent, who was spared in the last minute. Interestingly enough it is not a book were the victim falls for the rescuer. For a apparently cold killer, Ghost falls pretty fast in love, so this part was disappointing. The story is sometimes fast paced and I couldn't connect to the characters in this one, they lacked some depth.
This book should have a non-con warning and torture, because the evil madman is, well truly evil.
Ian and Ghost were enjoyable characters to read about and follow along in the story. The plot was interesting and the supporting characters were likable. There was one thing that really bothered me and that was the way Ghost saw himself as a possession and not as a person (ex. He says this is the story "I belong to him," not "I belong with him"...am I over thinking it? maybe...). Still it was an enjoyable story with likeable characters and well written.
