Unspeakable is the 2nd book in Laura Griffin's Tracers Series and this story is about Elaina McCord, an FBI rookie agent, who has been sent to a small town in Texas to help with a murder investigation. She feels unwanted apart from Troy Stockton, the true-crime writer we met previously in book 1.

I liked Elaina - the manner in which she handled herself in a male dominated environment was done pretty well. She has a human side to her and is not afraid to admit to her mistakes and that determination to do a good job.
I wasn't sure about her and Troy being together. I had this idea about him in my head....sleeps around...a total charmer...no depth. But actually, he turns out to be the opposite.
And it worked for me that there wasn't this insta-love kind of thing with them. There were ups and downs and there was a lot of baggage the two had to deal with before anything went any further.

Some interesting secondary characters which I am sure will make appearances again in the next books.

The story was well-paced with some pretty chilling moments and surprisingly enough I actually never guessed who the serial killer was until it was revealed at the end.

A nice mix of suspense, romance, action and interesting characters.

A definite recommendation if you like romantic suspense.

This was heavier on the suspense than it was on the romance, but it was really good suspense. I was pretty much riveted to the case Elaina was investigating and I did enjoy the slow burn romance she had on the side with Troy. I wasn't too impressed with Troy so the heavier suspense worked well for me in this book.

I get a kick out of a female character that is smarter than her male counterpoints. Despite this being Elaina's first FBI case, she grew up with a very, well known criminal profiler as a father. Instead of paving the way for her, it actually made her job harder. The good ole boy club tried to keep her out of the investigation so I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that she is the one who solved the case. Even if it was with the help of Troy.

I borrowed the audiobook on the audible romance package. The narrator was good but I wasn't a fan of her male voice. This is more of a personal preference and I did get used to it after awhile.

FBI Special Agent Elaina McCord is withering away in the Brownsville office until she's assigned to help the Lito Island, Texas local authorities investigate a murder. When it's determined that a serial killer is at work, she gets Troy Stockton's attention who then decides to lend the assistance of the Delphi Center Tracers.

I was simply bored. Elaina was just too whiny for my sensibilities and for the life of me couldn't see what playboy Troy found so compelling that he was willing to change his lifestyle. I figured out whodunit right away, which didn't help my issues. The narration was also problematic, too. I'm not a fan of this narrator from prior experience (before you ask why I'd give her another go, I won this book and never noticed she was the narrator).

I think this was just a one-book fluke and will continue with the series. This one just missed the mark for me.

This is a good story, not the best one I've read, and I will probably forget it soon enough, but I think it's a good story. Many years ago I read other books in this series and I also remember them as good ones.

The plot is not overly original. It looks like a serial killer who had killed several victims many years ago has returned to a small Texas beach resort. The problem is that for those murders a man has already been tried, and the famous author Troy Stockton wrote a book about it. Regardless of the truth, the killer must be stopped. Troy and aspiring FBI agent Elaina McCord, who is eager to become a profiler, must solve this mystery. As I said, there is nothing special about it. But it's a well-constructed and quite interesting story.

Troy and Elaina are fine as the main characters. Not very easy to remember, but they definitely didn't annoy me. Elaina does a few stupid things, but nothing really irresponsible to upset me. She and Troy make a nice couple. And that's good because we basically have lust at first sight. Especially from Troy. But fortunately, things between them are not so perfect all the time. Both Troy and Elaina notice each other's flaws. Their relationship is okay.

It's a good, solid story. I see that the new books in this series are still published. I have to read one sometime.

This book felt flat. I wanted more emotional development, more details, and closure from men who mistreated Elaina.

STORY BRIEF:
Elaina is a rookie FBI agent. She studied to be a profiler. She is sent to Texas to gain field experience. She is unwelcome in the male world. Her boss plans to fire her within the year. He sends her to Lito Island, Texas, to work on a serial killer case. The local police chief and Texas Ranger in charge of the case don’t like her and don’t want her involved. They make things difficult for her. Troy is a local author who became wealthy writing true crime novels. He is interested in the case and helps Elaina even though she doesn’t want his help. The killer kidnaps women, kills them with a knife, and dumps their bodies in wildlife refuge areas.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
At the end of the book, I felt a number of subjects were incomplete. I wanted to know more about what the killer did to his victims, were they conscious at the time, what his feelings were, and why he did this. I wanted to know more about the killer’s involvement with the online game. I wanted to know what the killer was thinking and feeling when he contacted Elaina to give her clues. I wanted to know who and why certain FBI men wanted Elaina to fail. At the end of the book, I was hoping to hear comments from FBI men and the local authorities about being thankful for what Elaina did regarding the case, and/or changing their minds about her, but not enough happened.

I was not emotionally engaged. I had trouble caring about Elaina. I did not like the way she treated Troy. I wasn’t in Troy’s head to understand why he was attracted to Elaina, other than her long legs. After they had sex, they both treated each other poorly and were angry with each other, which didn’t feel right to me. It felt like an excuse to create conflict. The story could have used more romantic emotional development.

DATA:
Story length: 384 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: none. Number of sex scenes: 2. Total number of sex scene pages: 9. Setting: current day Texas, Mexico, and Virginia. Copyright: 2010. Genre: romantic suspense.

The mystery here was strong enough, but I was really unimpressed with the character dynamics. I already didn't love the main male lead from the previous book, but he did little to commend himself to me further in this one. I found the resolution of every non-mystery related element of this one very unsatisfying

I waited until I had what was then the whole Tracers series (first three). The first book, Untraceable, was pretty good. It took me a couple of chapters to get into it, but once I did it was a good, solid read.
The character development was there, the relationship made sense.

This one, not so much. Elaina is a newbie FBI agent who feels as if she has been set up to fail when sent to a small town/island in TX to investigate a murder. Lo and behold one of the residents of the town is a nonfiction author familiar with the murderer/circumstances of previous similar crimes. Well, that last statement is not quite true, which turns out to be one of many plot points that are just thrown out there and then dropped to be casually cleared up later.

There were a number of "mentions" that just seemed to be shared and neatly drawn together too quickly and nonchalantly dropped. The "hero" of this book also seemed to be one of those plot points. In the previous book of the series, much was made of what a player this guy is. Well, he didn't display such characteristics in this book. In fact, he seemed to go into the relationship full bore, without hesitation or angst, seemingly falling in lurve at first sight and spouting "I love you" with nary a glance over his shoulder or a hesitation in his proclamation.

Don't even get me started on what appeared to be a total abandonment of her hard-fought-for career for a man who can write his books anywhere.

Man, how I love a good suspense-thriller-mystery-romance!

This was such a good read!
The author had me engaged throughout the whole story, and I couldn't wait to find out who "did it"!

Troy and Elaine were wonderful together!

I now off to read the next book in the series Unforgivable

I did enjoy this romantic suspense with plenty of action that moved right along. I liked the intelligent heroine's determined attitude and admired how she dealt with her chauvinistic co-workers while she regularly came up with leads. FBI agent Elaina is assigned to her first case and crime story author Troy tended to follow her around trying to help.

A good mix of romance and suspense although the characters' backstories are not sufficiently fleshed out.

Elaina and Troy have strong chemistry and their relationship is satisfying overall. Nevertheless, Griffin fails to provide any real depth of feeling or intensity of emotion in their romance. There is a sense that something real exists between them, but this potential is never fully realized.

The serial killer plot is rather run-of-the-mill with nothing that really distinguishes it from the many similar storylines in the genre. That said, there are some exciting scenes and the geocaching element is intriguing and well-developed. The identity of the killer is on the predictable side and there are a couple of plot threads that remain unresolved.

In sum, this is a good RS book despite the abovementioned issues, and readers who balk at dark and gritty descriptions in the vein of Karin Slaughter and Tess Gerritsen will appreciate Griffin's milder style.

Laura Griffin is perhaps the most consistent romantic suspense writer I've had the pleasure to read. Unspeakable is another well-crafted mystery that had me staying up way too late last night to finish the book. I enjoyed the way the suspense plot unfolded, and the intensity of the characters. The relationship between the main characters was satisfying. Even though the relationship might not have been the main focus of the book, it wasn't neglected. The arc of the relationship seemed to be in character with the personalities of Troy and Elaina. I would have liked some come-uppance for the "good ole boys club" that stonewalled Elaina, and hope that is mentioned at least in the next book of the series. I do think the visit from her father late in the book and the talk with her FBI boss helped clear up some of the whys of the problem.

I loved the DNA references in the book, which echoed some of the technology I was just mentioning to my biology students last week. I also enjoyed the geocaching reference. My family has some some family-friendly geocaching and it's fun!

New FBI Agent Elaina McCord is sent out to the edge of Texas to lend a hand to some unsolved murders. In the process she meets sexy true crime writer Troy Stockton. We met Troy a couple of books ago as a background figure. Overall the book was pretty good. The issues I had with the book is that Elaina conceded her power over to the "Men" the minute she showed up. I just wanted her to have more confidence in her abilities as an agent and a woman. Eventually, she did tell the "Men" to go take a hike and she went and solved the crime without their help. Even Troy was an irritant at first. It took me awhile to feel their romance, but eventually LG was able to turn it around for me. I just wish she would have told her dad to go take a flying leap off a short pier. That was the only sore point for me in the book. I like LG, she has the ability to really write a good book. This just wasn't one of my favs. I am looking forward to Mia's book(I hope she gets with studly Ric) Unforgivable, the last in this trilogy.

Definite win. A solid read that makes one happy at the end.

Griffin has quickly become my replacement Patricia Cornwell, not exactly the same, but it fits me perfectly. Strong female protagonists, nicely paced suspense, and hot heroes--Hello, yeah, I'm so there. The difference is with her Tracers series the main characters vary with each book, though past characters do make appearances. So, you don't get the single repeated character discovery in a Scarpetta, but it's good.

3.5 stars rounded up. The men in this book were irritating as they all displayed the true to life male chauvinism that dominates law enforcement. As I was reading, I would get get irritated much like the heroine herself was irritated. Plus there were times that I didn't much care for Troy, the H.

The plot was interesting and solid and I liked that Elaina really pulled the clues together.

One-Sentence Summary: A young FBI Agent sets out to prove herself by solving a string of murders near the beach

Review: I really really liked Elaina McCord the young FBI Agent struggling in a man's world. After a slowish start, the whodunnit suspense plot also caught my attention.

There were a couple of things that stopped it being five stars for me though, namely I felt they could have made more of Troy's connection to the case and the fact that his book was wrong. Also if I were Elaina, I would be way more suspicious of the way he inserted himself into the case and broke into her room at the start.

I really like the way Griffin introduced Ric Stantos/Mia in this book setting them up for their own story in the next book in the series.

3.5 stars.. I liked Special Agent Elaina McCord trying to buck the good ole boy system in the FBI and Texas, but what was she thinking?! She wants to be taken seriously but she acts totally unprofessionally and lets her pride and mouth get her into trouble.

The sexual attraction between Elaina and true crime writer Troy Stockton was hot, but

Detective Ric Santos flirting with Scientist Mia Voss was fun and I look forward to reading about their love story in the Book #3 in the series.

Another wonderful book by an author that has become a must read for me. Book 2 in her Tracer series delivers another gut wrenching suspenseful tale with a nice romance on the side.

Elaina McCord is an up and coming FBI agent that has her sights on becoming a profiler (just like her father, a legend in the FBI community). She's got some serious daddy issues going on and tends to be a loner since she doesn't feel like she can ever count on anyone. She gets stuck in Brownsville, Texas after finishing her FBI training where nothing happens. That is until dead bodies start adding up and she starts linking them to prior murders and missing women.

Enter Troy Stockon, who we met in the first Tracers book, Untraceable. He's true crime writer and he wrote a book based on one of the older murders that Elaina has now tied to their current suspect. Troy hates being wrong so he's become very active in the investigation. This well known womanizer also becomes very intrigued with Elaina.

Lots of twists and turns in this one. Laura Griffin does a nice job putting several different characters in your head as the possible murderer. She also gives you a glimpse of the actual murderer, you just don't know which character she's referring to. Nice job, definitely kept me guessing.

The romance between Elaina and Troy was believable - sexual vibes bounced off the two of them in spades. Elaina has to deal with her trust issues and Troy is faced with feelings he's never dealt with before. What kept me from giving it a full five stars was the ending. I don't want to spoil anything, but I thought how they got to where they did seemed a bit abrupt. Not saying I didn't like it, just didn't quite see how it happened (and so fast).

Anyways, maybe the next book in the series featuring Tracer Mia and I'm hoping Detective Ric Santos (he seems so yummy) will also contain an update on Elaina and Troy.

Even though this book is part of a series, this one can definitely be read on it's own. Other than a bit of background info on a few of the characters (i.e. Troy, Mia and Ben), it really didn't carry much over from the first (Untraceable). Alex Lovell makes a very brief appearance in this one (and no mention of her relationship with Nathan).

Took me 3 tortuous weeks to finish this, thankfully I had other books on the go to break the boredom. I must confess that although I finished reading it a few days ago, I don't remember much about it. Instantly forgettable it most certainly is. Even after the end I cannot say why H and h are together, come together or stay together. Absolutely nothing about them inspires one with confidence that they will stay together 30 seconds after lust expires. The heroine's character was weakly drawn. Terrible childhood experiences were pilled on top of this inanimate figurine and failed to move, engage or mildly interest the reader. The hero was not much better, he too is just rudimentary, put there to prop up the heroine and nothing else. Being empty, cardboard and flat individually as a couple they are even worse. Uninspiring, indifferent, unconvincing. All we get is the writer's screeching assertions that they are 'in love'. Nothing of the sort actually makes its appearance on page.

And a minor complain, does not a certain minor character ever watch TV? Given her misgivings about and violent dealings with the villain, could she not have pretty early on called the police hotline? I don't think I'll pick up another Laura Griffin book any time soon after this disappointing offering.

Unspeakable is the second book in Laura Griffin's 'Tracer' series. I did not read Untraceable, the first in the series, but had no trouble jumping right in to the story. This book can easily be read as a stand-alone.

Elaina McCord, the main character, is an FBI agent working toward her dream of being a profiler. For the most part, her character is strong and well-developed. The plot moves quickly, is multi-dimensional, and should easily hold a reader's attention. Elaina's interest in true crime writer Troy Stockton adds a nice romantic twist. My only complaint is that the killer's character felt incomplete. At the end, we're left without much information on who he really is, why he felt compelled to murder each of his victims, why he fixated on Elaina, or how he was able to contact her. Aside from this, I found Unspeakable an enjoyable read.

This is one of those books where you say..."Did see that coming."

Elaina and Troy were great. Had so much fun getting to know these two better. And getting a sneak peak at the sparks fly between Ric and Mia.

Laura has a way of writing that gets you excited, and keeps you reading until the end.

I have to be honest....The beginning of this book is a bit slow, and when I first picked it up a while after reading Untraceable (which is the first book in the Tracer series and possibly the BEST) I wasn't into it. I put it down, tried again and still wasn't excited.

But then I picked it up again after Unforgiveable was released, and once I got past the first chapter or two, I WAS HOOKED!!

They are all great stand alone books, BUT I recommend reading the series in order. And you DON'T want to miss Untraceable!!!

The thing I like about Laura Griffin's style is that her stories move at a good pace, her characters have enough depth and development to hold my interest, and there is strength in the mystery element and the romance element of the book. Unspeakable brings a few character from previous books, Troy Stockton and Mia Voss particularly, along with a bunch of new law enforcement people. I found the description of the internet treasure hunting game very interesting and see how there might be a whole subculture of people entertaining and challenging themselves with this. My response to Troy and Elaina's relationship was ho-hum; I didn't find it that compelling but the mystery/suspense aspect made up for it.

I liked the story overall, but there were a few issues that I had. For instance, there was no resolution with the killer. They catch him, but the author doesn't explain what his motivation was behind the killings.

Also, I liked most of the secondary characters, but I had a problem with the main character, Elaina. She was way too stuffy and by the book when dealing with others, but she was more than willing to break the rules when it suited her own personal agenda. Also, for an FBI agent, she was way too naive and just plain stupid at times. How did she expect people to take her seriously when she would pull such stupid stunts? Not to mention the fact that she would act like a child at times when things didn't go her way.

Enjoyed this book, it had my mind running around in circles a bit. Some carry-over characters from the first book and new ones introduced. Lots of red herrings tossed into the mix - thought I had it figured out who the killer was a couple of times, but was proved wrong almost until the end!

Somebody is playing a new game in a vast swamp in Texas - combining dead bodies stripped of their dignity and lying close to a geocache! Cryptic clues are left on-line where to find these geocaches - only for the the elite tracers to find!

4 stars and 2 thumbs up

At least 4.5 stars, so rounding up this time. This title is the second in Laura Griffin's Tracers series.
Even knowing that most Romantic Suspense books end up with the hero and heroine in a "safe" place, this story had me on the edge of my seat more than once.

The suspense near the end was palpable for me. I recommend this to readers who are discerning in their search for intelligent RS series.
