Mr. August: Alexander del Castillo, CEO and eldest son
His Dilemma: End his family's curse
His Only Choice: Marry...or else
Alexander was betrothed from childhood--his future held a wife not of his own choosing. Thankfully bride-to-be Loren Dubois was more than suited for her place at his side--and in his bed. But the businessman never expected his beautiful bride to get under his skin...or into his heart.
A typical Piscean, USA Today! Best-selling author, Yvonne Lindsay, has always preferred the stories in her head to the real world. Yvonne is a five-time Romance Writers of Australia R*BY nominee and three-time nominee and 2015 winner of the Romance Writers of New Zealand Koru Award of Excellence. She spends her days crafting the stories of her heart and in her spare time she can be found with her nose firmly in someone else’s book.
This book gets better towards the end. Let me explain. 🧐 Our hero and his brothers want to break a curse set on their family by marrying for love and honor. Also they want to make their failing grandfather happy. When our hero was a young boy his father saved the life of his best friend. The friend offers up his baby daughter’s hand in marriage to the eldest son in gratitude. Sounds medieval, right? Except that the story is set in modern day. 🤷🏼♀️ Now we move on to our heroine. She is beautiful, graceful, classy and has always known she was engaged to our hero. So she had been waiting patiently for him to end his playboy ways and come to claim his bride. Once again, this is set in the 2000’s not the 1600’s. Finally he arrives. Is bowled over by her beauty, etc. Figures he’s got a good deal. Hot virginal bride who is already in love with him. Done. All he has to do is get her pregnant and the curse is broken. This is where the story somehow managed to keep me interested. Although I kept thinking she alternated between doormat and blockheaded, and he alternated between jerky and domineering with a bit of stupid thrown in, it still kept me going. So, like I said, it gets better towards the end. 😁
No disrespect to people who didn't like the heroine. BUT I do not agree with you. She was the ONLY sane, ethical, and logical person in the book, who did NOT coerce, manipulate or blackmail people into doing anything. Neither did she do anything for ultimate gain. She gave CLEAR message. You don't love me, you don't get my body. You want a baby, fine, I agreed to give you one, I'll honour the agreement, but there are ways to conceive without physical involvement. Unless you can give love, which you have FALSELY led me to believe, you don't get my body. She does sleep with him, fine, she's only human, now she doesn't want to, she thinks he's having an affair, and the things he's been saying and doing doesn't help his case as a selfish cad. She told him what was bothering her. he DIDN'T explain! "From the second I arrived here Giselle has made it perfectly clear that you were only biding time with me until I provided you with an heir. Even you yourself did nothing to disabuse me of that belief.” He had NO response for this accusation, as this was so fucking true! He didn't explain ANYTHING until she had blazing proof of his infidelity and was ready to leave him. so yes, she has every right to say no to sex with other woman's leavings, and want other ways to get pregnant. You have to remember, he has done the wrong thing from the beginning, so she has every right to be mad, he needed to soothe her, he is the older one, he did nothing, except for offering sex. sex is NOT equal to love to her. she made the MOST valid point in harleyland. "You don’t love me, yet you want a baby with me. Some people might be able to separate emotion from their physical behavior but I am not one of them. I won’t share my bed with you if your only purpose in coming to me is to conceive a child." "And I refuse to take another woman’s leavings." this are the demands ANY self-respecting woman should make. you may not agree with me, but I stand by my opinion. Heroine wasn't bratty, she had self-respect, and hero was an idiot, and a slimeball. He KNEW his assistant had not been over him, she'd been dropping hints, which are apparently NOT subtle, and then she started getting aggressive, yet he did NOTHING until the point his wife caught her almost sexually assaulting him??? That's what HE said. and he just calmly dismissed her to gain upper-hand on his wife! Apparently would've fired her on spot if wife didn't show up. Give me a break!
From the blurb on the back I thought I would really enjoy this story; however...
The guy was a complete jerk and so full of himself. If I were the heroine, I never would have married him, especially not without talking over that prenup. She fell into his plans just a little too easily for me. Even though she 'loved' him her whole life, I still would think her eyes would have been a bit more open before actually marrying him.
I really can't recommend this book. The story made me mad, although I'm almost positive that wasn't the emotion the author was going for when she wrote this.
Wow i really hated this heroine she was so annoying and bitchy I wanted to slap her silly. Oh and the book really needed an epilogue with a pregnancy or a baby though nothing can redeem this heroine.
So basically Alexander suddenly decided he and his brothers have to break this alleged curse, so he finally decides to fly half way around the world to "pick up" his wife to be Loren and have a quickie wedding to help stabilize the family company. So he swoops in half way around the world, sweeps her off her feet, but as soon as she arrives in Portugal he completely ignores her for nearly 2 weeks straight (at least no one on one), gets his former mistress/assistant to plan everything (from wedding to clothes shopping) and entertain her. Like wow! What a foolish man! Plus after ignoring Loren for nearly 2 weeks, he totally expects to exercise his rights on the wedding night....ugh such arrogance. Alexander needs to be put in his place, he is just awful.
Loren, while not entirely naive, she was way too trusting and loving. She should have questioned things more when Alexander suddenly shows up out of the blue after so many years. Although I will give her props for trying to set the tone of things once she realizes the kind of marriage this was to be.
I had some difficulty in settling into this book, but stuck with it since I usually enjoy Yvonne's titles. I'm really glad I did because I did enjoy the book in the end and couldn't put it down.
My main thoughts on this book: * I couldn't stand Giselle right from the very first interaction with her in the book. While I'm sure in a different story she could have come across as a likable character, I really hope she doesn't end up with either of Alex's brothers. * I found Loren's responses to Alex's requirement in their prenup that she produce an heir, while trying to protect herself emotionally, rather amusing.
I am looking forward reading the brothers' stories. I also find myself wondering if Loren will be seen pregnant or as a mother in the brother's books
Did not like this one. It was quite disgusting that he kept his ex-lover working for him and had her help the heroine go shopping and settle in. The other issues (arranged marriage, miscommunication, etc) they had were typical and I didn't care one way or the other. Np.
Alexander's grandfather believes his family is cursed and that this ninth generation will be the last...that his grandsons will be childless and never carry on the line. To assuage his grandfather's fears, the grandsons agree to marry and have children as soon as possible. Fortunately, Alexander was betrothed as a child to Loren Dubois...he never expected to actually go through with it, but now that he has need, he's going to honor that proposal. He heads off to New Zealand, where Loren's mother relocated with her when she was a teenager and sets out to woo himself a convenient bride. Loren has been in love with Alexander since she was a small child, so it's a super easy task to convince her to go through with it. She heads back to Isla Sangrado with Alexander believing she's embarking on her dream of marrying her beloved and living the perfect marriage with him. Except she soon learns that Alexander didn't have any interest in marriage beyond proving the curse wrong. He may desire Loren, but he doesn't love her. Learning this Loren does the only thing she can do, she treats it like the marriage of convenience it is and makes Alexander work for her forgiveness.
Unfortunately, Alexander doesn't have to work hard enough for her forgiveness IMHO. Loren is a pretty gullible and naive kind of heroine. She's not my favorite, but I can sort of respect her. Yeah, she blindly heads off into a marriage without realizing what it's really about, but once she learns, she's pretty good about communicating what she wants and holding Alexander to a higher standard. I don't honestly believe she was in love with him, but that's just me. She always had a hero worship kind of love for him. He shows up, woos her for 2 days and bam, she's all "Now it's a mature and real love." No, it frickin wasn't. It was still hero worship but with a much more adult kind of lust added to it. She didn't even KNOW Alexander and what she was learning about him wasn't worthy of her love. A man who will lie and manipulate and trick a woman into marriage is not exactly honorable, even if he is doing it for someone he loves. He could have just as easily paid for a wife, been up front and honest with that woman and accomplished his same goal. Also kind of unexpected was the OW here. Yeah, she's a bit of a two-faced bitch trying to get her man back, but she doesn't really outright lie to the heroine. The OW was the source of a whole lot of truth bombs for once. "Your man is just using you for the curse." "He's probably hoping you're pregnant since that was his whole goal in the first place." She exaggerates and fibs a bit and absolutely insinuates things that aren't true, but she was actually telling Loren what she needed to hear.
Now Alexander...hmmmm.... Here's a piece of work that I never really warmed up to. First he has no problem with wooing his wife-to-be and letting her believe it's more than what it is. Not that he ever told her it was...I mean she should have yeeted at the first glance of his prenup. But then comes the marriage and he starts to feel some uncomfortable guilt at lying during his vows. And then his wife actually learns that he lied (thank you OW)...that he had ulterior motives in going through with the marriage. Does he apologize, admit that he was wrong or even vow to do better? Nope. He gets all angry and butthurt and being cock-blocked and schemes to get her on a honeymoon so he can get his marriage back on a better track and accomplish the goal of impregnating her. He seduces her when he knows she's fertile, which tells me (and her) it was pretty much all manipulation on his part. Granted, he's starting to think guilty thoughts, but he still goes ahead and manipulates her into bed anyway. Well then they get back to civilization and he pretty much disappears. He's telling himself he really wants to be with his wife and having their happy marriage, but he's not really showing it. And I have to wonder, even with their HEA and admitting he loves her, what's going to change here? Sounds like work is still more important. But he bugged me more than anything by refusing to explain shit when she asked for explanations. I just don't trust that these two are in for an HEA. Alexander just isn't good people...because you know he offered to end the marriage for her in order to manipulate her into staying. He knew what she needed to hear and he said it.

Can a marriage where one person loves and the other does not be happy? This is the problem between Alex and Loren. Finding their way to happiness is not easy, but it can happen. This story tells how it can be done.
Loren, sweet, strong, determined and not about to let any man take her for a ride. Alexander Del Castillo, powerful, attractive, experienced and knows exactly how to get underneath Loren's skin, & what do once he's there.
From childhood, Alexander & Loren were meant to be together. Not for reasons of romance, but because of a promise made between their father's.
Now, years later, Alex is back to claim Loren, and bring her back to her homeland as his bride.
Loren has been infatuated with Alex since she was a young child, and when Alex arrives in his helicopter in New Zealand to tell her of the marriage that is meant to become of them, Loren is more than happy to go back with this attractive man as her husband.
But, once married, things are not as Loren thought they would be. Alex spends the majority of his time working, meaning late night's & early mornings. His personal assistant Giselle is dying to get her claws into Loren's husband, and the relationship Loren fantasised about is fast turning into more of a nightmare than a dream.
What is the reasoning behind Alex's distance to Loren? Is she about to walk away from this new life, or are things about to become unearthed?
Great book, wasn't too keen on the ending.. Or Giselle for that matter ;)
25 years ago, Alexander del Castillo's father saved Loren Dubois' father's life. In return, he promised his only daughter to his oldest son.
Now, Alex has come to collect his bride and end the curse his grandfather believes will come true for the 9th generation...which is Alex and his two brothers.
Loren has always know she would one day be Alex's. With that knowledge she has always loved him. From a child and following him around, to teenage of crushing, to adulthood now.
Alex is doing this to end the curse by having an heir. Love isn't apart of the equation for him.
When Loren finds out he used their father's promise as a way to get her to marry him so he could have an heir and end the curse, she refuses to be involved in any normal married couple activities except those specified in the prenuptial.
As Loren becomes more and more distant from him, Alex takes a closer look at his feelings for his wife. But will acts by his jealous personal assistant and overhearing he and his brother talk demolish any chance of him convincing her of his love?
He was behaving so bad and kept saying that he will make it up to her but always something came up so he never even apologised. While she was so blinded by her love that she said yes to everything and when she was already tied, she tried to ASK questions 'cause she couldn't do even that.
I didn't like the first couple chapters, but the whole story developed much better than it began. In the beginning he was arrogant, and she was naive and immature. But both characters evolved; he became more compassionate and she found her inner strength. The story was passionate, sensual and emotional.
You can't miss the chemistry between Alexander and Loren. This is a refreshing twist on the classic "betrothed since birth" plot. Full of engaging twists.
